Weekly Patches and Dota 2 Release Date

Personally I am very disappointed in the progress of the development of DotA 2 and so are many others.

It seems as if D2 is just a side project to Valve. With the exception of January, Valve produced one hero (destroyer) and two weeks without an update in Feb.

Now from Feb. 3 – March 9th we have had 2 heroes and very minor tweaks.

2 heroes in 6 weeks. nice. only roughly 48 more to go Valve. Guess D2 will make its release mid 2014 at this rate.

Seriously, this game is going to make millions. get more people working on this or something bkz Feb – march 9th updates have been major disappointments and shown us just how hard Valve is working on Dota 2 (Not very hard at all).

Lock please, there’s a designated thread for this.

Now the test server isn’t updated. It took them over a month with little updates to get it working and now they aren’t updating it until the day before a regular patch! What’s the point of it now.

It’s 39. Way less than I though, actually.

I’m just as frustrated as anyone else is by the prospect, but what really intrigues me is the time frame. Assuming that, from now, there are 39 heroes to be released, and 1 week is required for each hero. that is about, unless my math is wrong 9.75 months for every hero to be released from now, assuming an update schedule that is always on time and consistent at 1 hero a week. that means in essence, the game would not have all the original dota heroes until around december of this year or january of the next. Then when you have to factor in new heroes, the game doesn’t look like it will be complete in 2012, and if it is, it will be at the VERY end of the year. This is of course assuming that, complete means all the old heroes added, which it likely does not. I suspect it won’t have as many heroes as the original dota until 2013 at this current pace. Which if you think about it, is kind of disheartening. Looks like we still have a long road ahead of us.

They will probably speed up the process of releasing heroes as the game draws closer to completion.

At this point Icefrog himself is releasing heroes faster than Valve, and that’s saying a lot.

Well I read somewhere on the forums, granted this has not been checked, so it could be hearsay, that Mr. Newell wants the game in a relative state of completion by August. However at this current pace, that would be basically impossible. To hammer it down to just around 5 months, would require 2 heroes a week to be released. This means that, unless the amount of staffers working on the game double, or the game’s team shifts hero making into absolute overdrive and doubles it’s previous pace, that’s not going to happen. This is just a basic logistics issue.

However, by increasing the speed of hero development, the overall time of testing for a hero is lowered, and could drastically increase the number of missed bugs entering the system that will inevitably have to be squashed. It’ll be interesting to see how valve tries to handle this challenge.
