I’m seeing too many people pick Axe and don’t know how to build or play him in Wraith Night mode.

HOW:
Start with TWO shields, put your first point in Counter Helix, proceed directly south along the central passage and around the tower to the encampment and spend the first round spawn-camping the south-west region. Here, you will get to level 5 or 6 by the end of wave 1. maybe level 7 if you’re lucky, depending on the spawn rates.

Your skillset priority is R->E->W->Q, Q being the very last skill you raise in the mid-game.

Rush for a Vangaurd, then sell off your second shield and start working on Maelstrom then build Arcane Boots 2.

Start building blade mail by the time you sink your first point into Q, then consider either upgrading to MJollnir, building Assault Curiass or Vladmir’s depending on the situation of the team. DO NOT BUILD A HEART.

WHY:
Having TWO shields to start with will help block most if not all damage in round 1 and some parts of round 2. The shields DO NOT stack, it’s just having more then one will increase the chances of blocking 20 damage. this will keep you alive without needing your W to do so. spawn camping the south-west region will speed up your level advantage over the rest of your team so you can spam your R by the start or middle of round 2.

Rushing a Vangaurd will help you to block damage in round 3 and parts of round 4 as the regular shields will become useless at this point.

Building a Maelstrom is MANDATORY for every hero in Wraith Night mode, because the burst lightning damage greatly helps with killing the masses faster, plus it works when you don’t perform a Counter Helix. (but it won’t trigger when you do Counter Helix)

Spamming your ultimate for instant kills in an area of effect greatly reduces the enemy’s numbers, and Arcane Boots 2 will help you do that.

MJollnir will give you attack speed and a better lightning proc, Assault Curiass and/or Vladmir’s if nobody else built them, for the Aura effects.

Your classic Q+Blade Mail combo will help take down the bigger mobs, and Heart of Tarasque will break every time you take damage – which will be all the time as axe – so do not waste gold building it, it won’t do you one bit of good since your W will be the thing that keeps you alive.

TIPS:
Your job is tanking the enemy and crowd control. if you see a large crowd on the mini-map you should rush to it and use your ultimate to jump in the middle of it. Make sure you ALWAYS have your W active and don’t be afraid to give another team member your W when they need it. use your classic Q+Blade Mail combo if possible. do not spend too much time focusing on one mob, move around as necessary.
