Dota 2 is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). Dota 2 is a sequel to Dota 1, or Defense of the Ancients, which was a community mod for Blizzard’s World of Warcraft. Dota 2 can have a steep learning curve and will take a lot of dedication to learn all the intricacies.

That being said, we are here to help you. These are the most important terms and phrases you should know as you enter the deep world of Dota 2.

Dota Key Terms:

Aggro: Gaining the attention of an enemy unit or the focus of a specific enemy.

Ancients: The massive building in each base. The objective of Dota is to destroy your opponents Ancient.

AoE: AKA Area of Effect. Spells or attacks that deal damage over a wide-spread area. Dota 2 deny creeps key and peele

Backdoor: A strategy in which one or more heroes will attack the enemy team’s buildings without pushing the lane. They do so without the help of a creep wave, attempting to take the opponent by surprise.

Barracks: A building that – once destroyed – grants the creeps of the opposing team extra health, damage etc in the corresponding lane. If all six barracks (two in each of the three lanes) are destroyed, the opposing team will start spawning Mega Creeps, which are even more powerful.

Bot: A computer control opponent. Available to play against in custom and co-op games.

Buff: A beneficial spell or effect used on yourself, a teammate or friendly creep. The opposite of debuff.

Burst Damage: A large amount of damage dealt in a short amount of time.

Buyback: Once a hero is dead, they have the option to spend gold in order to spawn instantly. The buyback ability has a long cooldown of 480 seconds along with a scaling gold cost increase.

Carry: A hero that can overpower the enemy team – specifically in the late game.

Cooldown: The period of time it takes for a skill, ability or item to be used again.

CS/Creep Score: The number of last hits a hero has OR the number of last hits and denies a hero has.

Creep: The basic unit within Dota. Dota 2 deny creeps key and peele A creep is considered anything that is not a courier, building, ward or hero.

Debuff: A negative spell or effect used on opponents. The opposite of buff.

Deny: Intentionally killing an allied hero building in order to negate the enemy from gaining experience and gold.

Dire: A faction in Dota 2. The Dire team begins on the top right side of the map.

Disable: A spell, effect or ability that prevents an enemy hero from moving, attacking, and casting.

Dive: When one or more heroes pursues an opposing hero despite entering tower range in order to secure a kill.

DPS: Abbreviation of Damage per second. The amount of damage that dealt per second by a hero.

Farming: The act of killing creeps for gold and experience.

Fountains: A building located in each spawn that provides health and mana regeneration. They also defend the spawn area against enemies.

Gank: When a hero or group of heroes try to kill an opposing hero by taking them by surprise.

Hard Carry: A hero that is weaker in the beginning to mid game but becomes very strong in the later stages of the game. Hard Carry heroes require a significant amount of farming in order to be effective.

Hard Lane: A lane in which opposing creep wave collides with the furthest tower, creating a situation where ganks can be more likely.

Illusions: Weaker copies of heroes created by spells or items. Illusions typically deal less damage and take more damage then regular heroes.

Jungling: The act of killing neutral creeps in the jungle.

Mid: The middle of the three lanes on the map.

Neutral Camps: Where neutral creeps spawn together within the jungle.

Neutral Creeps: AKA Neutrals. Units that spawn on the map that are not aligned with either team. They offer added gold and experience for players – some even offer unit items. Can be found in neutral camps.

Offlaner: A hero sent into a hard lane by themselves (see: solo). These heroes typically need high durability or escapability.

Pet: A summonable creature that will appear next to the hero.

Pull/Pulling: A hero purposely gaining the attention of a hostile unit in order to drag them away from an active fight, building, or creep wave.

Tank: A hero that can take massive amounts of damage.

Wards: An item that can be placed on the map that provides extra vision for a certain duration.

Evasion

is mechanic that allows the unit to dodge an incoming attack. When evaded, the attack gets completely nullified. This means, anything that relies on attacks to hit their targets do not trigger, which includes most attack modifiers, and on-hit effects.

A similar mechanic to evasion is blind. While evasion makes a unit evade incoming attacks from other units, blind makes a unit miss upon attacking other units. Just like evasion, when an attack misses to blindness, it gets completely nullified.

Contents

Mechanics [ edit ]

Evasion and blind trigger upon landing an attack, which is on projectile impact for ranged units. If it triggers, the attack does not affect the evading unit at all, so that no on-attack effects are triggered. Upon missing an attack on an enemy, a red floating text appears, reading “miss”, visible to the attacking player only. The enemy, who was just missed by an attack, also sees a floating text, but in white and reading “evade” instead. Furthermore, a missed attack does not play any of the attack impact sounds.

Stacking [ edit ]

Multiple sources of evasion stack multiplicatively with each other, while sources of blind effects stack additively with each other and multiplicatively with evasion. The uphill miss chance stacks multiplicatively with evasion and blind. While the actual chance to evade is diminishing, each source of evasion increases effective HP against physical attacks more than the last due to evasion’s exponential nature. The chances of all sources of evasion and blind are determined by pseudo-random distribution.

Formula Miss chance = 1 – [(1 – evasion from source 1) x (1 – evasion from source n) x (1 – (sum of all sources of blind)) x (1 – uphill miss chance)]
= 1 – [Π n (1 – evasionn) x (1 – Min(sum of all sources of blind, 100%)) x (1 – uphill miss chance)] Hit chance = 1 – [(1 – accuracy from source 1) x (1 – accuracy from source 2)] = 1 – Π n (1 – accuracyn) Final hit chance = 1 – miss chance + (hit chance * miss chance) = 1 – miss chance x (1 – hit chance) Final miss chance = 1 – final hit chance = miss chance x (1 – hit chance)

E. g. for Butterfly the chance to get hit is 65% because Butterfly has 35% evasion. The source of evasion values must be expressed in hundredths (so if we have 50% evasion, the value needs to be 50/100 = 0.50).

As an example, if Phantom Assassin has Level 4 Blur (0.5 chance to get hit) and Butterfly (0.65 chance to get hit), her chance to get hit by attacks is 0.5 * 0.65 = 0.325 or 32.5%. A more concrete way of thinking about evasion stacking is that for an attack to bypass an evasion stack and connect, it should bypass each source of evasion in sequence. Only if all sources of evasion fail, is the attack able to deal damage.

Evasion granting talents [ edit ]

The following heroes have a talent that grants them evasion.

Chymistry

Alchemist is a team of two beings, the Keen Razzil Darkbrew, and his ogre accomplice. Razzil is member of the Darkbrew Family, known for their interest in chymistry. Forever on the search for materials to use in alchemy, the pair extracts ingredients from the corpses of their foes. [1] Although pacified by Razzil’s makeshift potion, the ogre nonetheless seems tired of carrying his partner around, and longs for new shoes, [2] a back brace, [3] and less walking. [4]

Despite Razzil’s estrangement from his family, he still sometimes serve as their enforcer. [5]

Tinker believes that alchemy is an illegitimate science, and thinks Razzil is a loon for practicing it. [6]

Poof Meepo – the mid game carry

5. Advanced Blink Dagger Play.
6. Teamfights

Introduction

Meepo was one of my favorite heroes in Dota 1 and now hes been released in dota 2. He is one of the best farming heroes in the game. He can split push all by him self due to his ultimate ability allowing you to keep all the lanes pushed up if needed.

Pros/Cons

Pros

    Fun
    Huge Nuke damage
    Sorta a Carry
    Earthbind is boss
    ability to farm multiple lanes
    easily able to clear jungle

    Squishy
    Micro oriented
Some times tricky to land skills
can be easily countered with high burst
    extremely low base damage

Play Style

When you first start out in a lane youll notice you have a really low base damage. This makes farming at this stage rather tricky. However, because Meepo is very level dependent rather then item dependent this isn’t such a bad thing. play extremely safe from levels 1-6 because of the low amount of HP you have and your low base damage. You really will only be able to harass if you are laning with some one who has a slow or if they initiate on you at this stage. One thing people usually miss when they first play meepo is that poof can be used with out a clone as an effective aoe nuke. This makes it easy to kill some one who is tower diving you and melee.

When you hit level 6 you’ll be able to start moving around and doing more things. If you can land an earthbind (or your lane partner lands a stun) try to get up as close as possible then spam poof with your main hero and your clone. The idea here is that because you are in melee range you will get both the entrance and exit damage effectively doubling the damage of the spell, I. E. 140 becomes 280 and with the clone it becomes 520. With a point in geostrike you’ll be able to slow them from here and eventually use the poof combo again to finish them off. If they are a particularly fast hero or have invisibility make sure to use both of your earth binds in succession to keep them from running away.

When you either start to loose towers or the other team starts teaming up, start to split your clones and hero up into different lanes. I tend to have my clones all in one lane or split into 2 if I have 4 of them and my hero in another. Even if you aren’t the one farming the gold here you should be able to get double or even triple the xp that a normal hero would get just by being in the lanes. This gives you a huge advantage. If you aren’t the highest level hero in the game after doing this then you are doing something wrong. Also when you get 2 clones it becomes extremely easy to push a lane by your self. You can use your poof to simply kill all the creeps. Doing 800 damage in an aoe makes this extremely easy. Also at this point your geostrike will make finishing off stragglers a breeze.

Advanced clone tactics and skill explanations.

A few people have suggested skilling earthbind after poof and then geostrike. IMO this is extremely situational. If you are faced with invis heroes or heroes with great escape/movement, this can be good to force a hero down into its place as the range on a maxed earth bind is ridiculous. Maxed Geostrike on the other hand allows you to maximize the damage your clones and hero does because all of them stack. (with 2 clones you get 3 separate instances of geostrike on the target, with 3 you’ll have 4 etc.) When coupled with an AC you can slow people better then the zombies from undying’s totem. Imagine getting one strike from 5 meepos on one hero. This is technically a 100% movement slow. This is exactly why when I go for a Geostrike early build ill rush a Scepter.

Because of the nature of this hero, some more advanced tactics can involve sending in a lone meepo or getting a blink dagger and blinking on top of a lone hero while poofing your clones to your meepo to do a surprise amount of damage. This is an extremely effective way of ganking some unsuspecting int/support hero and or low HP carry. This is also the reason why meepo is up with undying on the “anti-gank” category. When some one trys to take out a clump of meepos who are pushing a lane far into enemy territory, it is very easy to poof away and keep pushing a different lane. Think of this like the Morphling ultimate except there is no time limit.

Lastly, I wanted to touch on the reason why i chose Str treds to be the core boots for this build. Meepo has a really low amount of HP naively and because his clones only get the benefit of auras and his boots, using Str treds to boost their hp is very important. Even if you were to get a reaver on meepo, it would only add 8 str to each clone while str treads grant 10 str.

Advanced Blink Dagger Play.

To pull off some of the magic that you can do with a blink dagger requires quite a bit of micromanagement. Due to this, I have decided to devote a complete section to this area. Meepo dota 2 build night A lot of the other guides for meepo center around getting a blink dagger as fast as possible, but i think for pubs, this is wrong simply because the skill required to pull off such a tactic is extremely demanding, that being said, i think its still a reasonable way of playing meepo.

So youve decided to get a blink dagger on meepo and you probably don’t really know where to start with it due to the fact that the original hero only gets its benefits. the Blink dagger meepo gives a lot of versatility to how you can play however, because of its general nature. Imagine if you will seeing a lone meepo running around. Very tempting to gank. But then out of know where, 3 other meepos poof in and you die from the burst or you at least come close to dying. This is the idea behind this tactic. Whether it be offensive or defensive, the blink dagger can be a great tool for meepo.

Here’s the basic technique. activate Poof on all your original meepo, then blink in. If timed correctly when your hero meepo arrives next to the hero you are ganking, the clones will also arrive with a lot of damage. Again, I sa >

Teamfights

Your goal in team fights is to get one of your “heroes” into melee range, whether through earth bind spams or a blink dagger, you can then pull off a full rotation of poof to do a ton of damage to their entire team if they are clumped up enough. Beware though, if one clone dies you die. If one clone starts to loose HP fast, make sure to micro him back out of the fight. If they have high burst you will probably have to make sure you initiate with the main hero and then fall back to a clone you’ve left behind. This can be a very effective method of doing lots of damage and keeping your self alive.

Anyhow, I will continue to update this as I continue to play this hero. Have fun guys.

Immortal Treasure I: A look at the TI8 Battle pass’s first Immortals

The International 8 has some extremely promising cosmetics already for dedicated Dota 2 fans.

Share All sharing options for: Immortal Treasure I: A look at the TI8 Battle pass’s first Immortals

For item-lovers and hero spammers alike, the Battle Pass is an early Christmas, as it drops event-exclusive cosmetics for a wide number of heroes. While all are coveted, the most common is the first set to be released, Immortal Treasure I.

Immortal Treasure I the first to be earned by all Battle Pass owners, as it’s available regularly at pretty low levels. For this year’s Battle Pass, you can earn it at level 1, followed by levels 10, 22, 34, 46 and 80; from there, you get another every 30 levels, meaning there’s no shortage of chances to get what you want.

And while it may be the most common, it’s certainly nothing to hide away in your inventory. For this one, they’ve released six common items, plus four more of increasing rarity — and they’re all pretty nice.

Whether you’ve already gotten quite a few or are eager to open them up, you can feast your eyes on the items and their in-game ability effects below.

Normal Drops

These items are guaranteed drops. No matter what, you will get one of these, and there will be no duplicates until you’ve earned all of them.

Ancient Apparition — Shatterblast Core

Ancient Apparition’s Shatterblast Core Dota 2 | Valve

Finally to (kind of) match his TI5 immortal, the Shatterblast Core is a cool, dark body item that’ll be sure to capture someone’s attention. And if they aren’t appreciating it, you can force them too with an Ice Vortex effect that’ll literally freeze them in their tracks. And also figuratively, really. On the other hand, if they see your awesome icicles on your back, somebody’s doomed anyway. (May or may not be AA.)

Riki – Edict of Shadows

Riki’s Edict of Shadows Dota 2 | Valve

If you weren’t irritating enough as Riki, why not up your game? Edict of Shadows actually looks pretty cool, but what’ll get your enemies is the massive face of your own character popping up when you use Smoke Screen. And with a 55% winrate on Riki right now, can you really go wrong trying to pick this one up?

Spirit Breaker — Savage Mettle

Spirit Breaker’s Savage Mettle

If you want that 17% to really hurt, then the Savage Mettle is for you. It’s a weapon for Spirit Breaker that adds an appropriately-named, savage red-and-black effect to your Greater Bashes, meaning your enemies will absolutely know when that charge and ult hit. While the red doesn’t really match Spirit Breaker’s default colors as-is, thankfully it’s subtle enough not to overpower his flaming head.

The Underhollow will likely be a Battle Royale game mode

Terrorblade — Span of Sorrow

Terrorblade’s Span of Sorrow Dota 2 | Valve

As if Terrorblade’s Arcana wings weren’t sick enough, this one may replace it for a short time. (Or not.) It adds an effect to Sunder, and is actually compatible with any gems you may have — and Sunder’s effect changes color accordingly. So if you really want a pink Sunder, by all means, go for it.

Underlord — Emerald Conquest

Underlord’s Emerald Conquest Dota 2 | Valve

The Emerald Conquest is an emerald-shaded weapon ceratinly fit for an Abyssal Underlord. It has the geometric gold trims reminiscent of gems, and even has an effect for Pit of Malice to match. The effect adds the geometric flair and a few golden geodes to match, so your enemies know exactly whose pit they’re stuck in.

Vengeful Spirit — Mournful Reverie

Vengeful Spirit’s Mournful Reverie Dota 2 | Valve

Vengeful Spirit is already edgy by her own right, and you can rock that dark backstory with style. The Mournful Reverie is a gorgeous pair of wings that gives her a gem on her chest, an extra dark glow about her and a magic missile to match. As a neat final touch, upon impact, the missile explodes into a dark bout of feathers. Your enemies will feel the doom and gloom of your fallen status.

Non-common drops

While any of the prior items can and will drop, there’s also a small chance you’ll get one of the following as well. These are marked in order of rareness, but mileage may vary. After all, they’re still luck boxes.

RARE: Lich — Glare of the Tyrant

Lich’s Glare of the Tyrant Dota 2 | Valve

This hand item for Lich looks pretty hardcore on its own. After all, an angry yet jubilant dead king’s head is always a great accessory when you’re trying to look cool for battle. But the effects are the icing on the cake: a dark blue glow emits from the head as it glides from enemy to enemy, with dramatic explosions of ice shards adding to the effect of pain. Here’s hoping you’re not on the other side of it.

Dota 2 Redditors hold (fictional) penguins hostage in exchange for TI8 Compendium

VERY RARE: Riki — Golden Edict of Shadows

Those dark, glowy, particle-shrouded horns not doing it for you? Distinguish yourself from the filthy common versions with this gold edition of the Riki Immortal. They have more of a “sheen” effect, and, like the original version, affect your abilities as well.

And yes, you get a gold version of the fog effect as well. Sick.

ULTRA RARE: Phantom Assassin — Codicil of the Veiled Ones

Phantom Assassin’s Codicil of the Veiled Ones Dota 2 | Valve

Phantom Assassin is rad enough as it is, between her design and animation, but Codicil of the Veiled Ones ups that to another level. With a gorgeous tail to her helmet, you’ll be sneaking through the maps in stile. And your enemies see your Stifling Dagger anyway, so why not piss them off more with a golden glowing dagger? It’s a great way to make a fashionable entrance.

COSMICALLY RARE: Emblem of the Crystal Echelon

Emblem of the Crystal Echelon Effect

No, it’s not actually Lion item. In fact, it’s a non-hero-specific item, apparently equippable with anyone you’re feeling like playing as that day. It glows as you move around and gives you a neat walking trail, so you can feel like TI8 royalty even if you’re not there. It also seems to give you a custom Aegis of Champions, meaning the little hover-over replica in the fountain shop, so you can gloat to your friends over your awesome “cosmically rare” feat.

Febby at ESL One Mumbai: “I mean, I didn’t leave, I got kicked. So it’s not a very good feeling”

Febby shocked attendees at the NSCI Dome and the rest of the Dota 2 world by snagging the Mercedes Benz MVP award at ESL One Mumbai. But before all of that, We had the chance to sit down with him to gather his thoughts about Mineski’s recent roster changes, his experience in India, and of course Kpop and Game of Thrones.

Gfreak: Hi Febby, Welcome to Mumbai. You’ve had a fantastic performance so far, Top 3 at this event secured. How do you feel right now?

Febby: Not a surprise, Mineski is a strong team.

Gfreak: Coming into ESL One Mumbai, you left Mineski. Then joined them, and will be leaving them once again after this tournament comes to a close. How are you handling this transition?

Febby: I mean, I didn’t leave, I got kicked. So it’s not a very good feeling. But transitions? Hopefully, I do well this tournament so that the other teams notice me and they pick me up. That’s what I am hoping for.

Gfreak: What do you think is your strongest hero in this patch?

Febby: My strongest hero in this patch is probably Earth Spirit, I am pretty good at Earth Spirit.

Gfreak: Would you like to stick with the support role, or if given the opportunity do you want to play in another role?

Febby: Actually, I was a carry player in the very beginning. I tried playing carry 2 years ago, but it didn’t work out. I’ve been playing support for too long, so I’ve gotten used to it. I think I am comfortable in this role.

Maybe I’ll give a shot at 5. But for now, 4 is fun.

Gfreak: What are your thoughts on this season of the DPC in contrast with Last year’s?

Febby: I think it’s actually pretty good. A lot of Tier 2, Tier 3 teams are getting a lot of chances because of the Minors.

Gfreak: Ever since you came into the scene with MVP, you’ve been known for a very aggressive brand of Dota. Afk dota 2 meaning pictures But that has changed over the last year, has it been hard to change your playstyle?

Febby: I mean, I don’t think it is hard but the results are showing otherwise, so I guess it is hard.

Gfreak. There used to be a lot of players emerging from the South Korean region, like the whole MVP squad and Velo. But that has dried up now. What happened?

Febby: I mean the people are still there it is just that QO is in Australia, for personal reasons, so he can’t leave there for a few months but he keeps talking to me about making a team, but I don’t want to freaking go to Australia. Afk dota 2 meaning pictures

I don’t think there are a lot of reasons. It’s just the same players there.

Gfreak: So this is your second time in India, what are your favourite and least favourite parts about India?

Febby: My favourite part is the food, it is actually really really good.

My least favourite is: I think the roads here are way too chaotic. There’s just too much honking, like the cars are all over the place, not in a single line. So I feel like I am gonna die any second, so I am pretty scared about the roads.

Gfreak: What suggestions do you have for tournament organizers and teams in the Indian region?

Febby: The one tournament I was here before. That was pretty okay, and this was pretty nice so I have nothing to say. I think it is pretty good.

Gfreak: Any suggestions for Indian teams like Signify?

Febby: Oooof.

Maybe they lack experience. I am sure they have the skills because they’re all high MMRs. I see them all the time in pubs, so I think they just lack the experience.

Gfreak: Do you watch Game of Thrones? How would you like the series to end?

Febby: I would like Ned Stark to rise up from the grave and take the throne because I think that guy is the perfect character.

Gfreak: Who is your favourite K-Pop band?

Febby: The people are going to want me to say Twice or BTS or even Blackpink. So yes, Blackpink Jennie or Twice Momo. She’s wooooo.

Gfreak: Do you have any shoutouts?

Febby: Shoutout to Mineski, even though they kicked me from the team. I think they’re a really good team and have really good potential and I hope they show that in the upcoming Disneyland Major.

Valve Ends ‘Dota 2’ Boosting By Banning Accounts For 8 Years

Valve is making Dota more welcoming.

Valve has decided to ban Dota 2 players who appear to be abusing bots to boost their MMR scores and get out of the low priority matchmaking queue, sometimes for up to eight years.

Many users have reported that their accounts have been banned, some for a few months while others are reporting bans up to eight years, meaning they are unable to play Dota 2 until 2025.

A number of bans have been handed out to accounts that appear to be using services that promise to get them out of the low priority matchmaking queue. These services will put the account into matches with bots where they can’t lose, this means the account will hit the required win threshold in low priority within minutes.

Players who are toxic in game and are reported by others, or who abandon games, will be placed in a low priority queue, where the have to play the single draft game mode with other players in the low priority queue. This is seen as a punishment, as low priority games are typically toxic and not fun to play in, however if you can escape low priority within minutes by using bots it isn’t much of a punishment.

One banned player contacted the Steam support team who revealed that there is a number of violations that will get accounts banned. Deliberate actions to artificially boost MMR of the account, creating an unfair competitive advantage through third-party programs, circumventing low priority by collusion with other users or bots and buying, selling, or trading accounts with boosted MMR will all get you banned.

Unfortunately for those hoping that this will see any cheaters gone for good, Dota 2 is a free to play game, meaning all people have to do is sign up for a new Steam account and they are good to play Dota once again.

What is the MMR vaccine?

The MMR vaccine is an injection given to help prevent measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). Measles causes a skin rash to appear on your head and upper neck. The rash may slowly spread to your hands and feet. Mumps can infect many parts of your body and usually causes inflammation of your parotid glands. These glands make saliva and are found in your cheeks. Rubella causes a skin rash that usually starts on your face. The rash may spread to your chest, abdomen, back, arms, and legs.

Who should get the MMR vaccine?

You may need the MMR vaccine if you do not have evidence of immunity to measles, mumps, or rubella. Dota 2 w33haa mmr vaccine You may need 1 or 2 doses at least 4 weeks apart if:

  • You were born before 1957 and work in healthcare.
  • You were born during or after 1957 and:
    • You are a college student.
    • You work in healthcare.
    • You plan to travel internationally.

A Geologist’s Gu >

Why does the terrain on the Dota 2 battlefield look the way it does? In this article, we propose several hypotheses for geologic processes that have sculpted Dota 2’s map.

My introductory geology textbook always featured photos of real-life locations alongside sketches of “what a geologist sees.” With this in mind, I took a quick glance at the map and drew a sketch (Fig. 1) to get us started. Later, we’ll discuss various geologic explanations for the landscape of the Dota terrain.

Screenshot of the game map. Figure 1: What a geologist sees in the Dota 2 map.

Regional Scale Processes

There’s obviously a hot spot (Fig. 2) under the Dire base. All that lava and geothermal heat has to come from somewhere, and you can get a glimpse of it when Dire’s Ancient explodes. Since Dire doesn’t have a big conical volcano as part of its base, we can assume the lava is probably just issuing from various volcanic vents. The rocks are pretty dark in color, so we can assume they are rich in iron and magnesium minerals, aka “Mafic” (Magnesium-Ferric) rocks. Furthermore, thin, low viscosity lava tends to issue from vents that don’t have cones around them, and low viscosity is often associated with basaltic melts, which harden into the dark rock basalt. Mystery solved.

(Screenshot by Esports Edition.) Figure 2: A diagram of a hot spot.

On the Radiant side, the rock type is a little more difficult to determine. If you show a geologist a buff colored rock and ask them what rock it is, they will likely let out an exasperated sigh. There’s no shortage of rocks that are tan or buff-colored. Most likely, the rocks on the Radiant side are sedimentary of some sort. Could be sandstone, could be limestone, but you won’t know until you drop some hydrochloric acid on them.

Our Community Manager, Gillian, noted that Tiny resembles the rocks on the Radiant side. According to his lore, Tiny doesn’t know where he came from, but he may want to send off one of his scabs for geochemical analysis along with a piece of the Radiant Ancient next time it explodes.

The River

There’s hardly any large-scale topographic relief on the Dota map, so it’s hard to imagine why the river flows the direction that it does. Considering that the river is easily crossed by all heroes—even those with stubby little legs and carts full of mines—it’s obviously not very deep, and, furthermore, the depth is extremely consistent.

Season 10 Preseason is Here!

The river is clearly lacking a “thalweg” (Fig 3.): there’s no obvious spot where the water is the deepest. Typically, the natural flow of a river produces a thalweg, and it is in different parts of the channel based on the shape of the stream. Since the river that goes across the Dota map is pretty straight, we can assume it’s not in meander or braided stream stages.

Laminar flow can produce this sort of pattern, so we’ll assume that the river is basically flowing along without any eddies or turbulence and therefore is all one depth. The stairs at the ends of the river raise a few questions about where the water actually goes, but for the sake of simplicity, let’s assume the engineers of the Dota world put in a few culverts under the stairs to let the water pass through.

Figure 3: A typical river cross section, complete with thalweg (above) and a hypothetical cross section of the river in Dota 2 (below).

Roshan’s pit is another curiosity. It’s possible that it’s the remnants of a large boulder that sat in the middle of the river, and Roshan hollowed it out to make it a cozy little nook to live in. Or it could have been an eroded arch that eventually became a pillar and later, Roshan’s home. At any rate, he better be planning on fortifying the upstream side of it if he wants to keep living there. What does he do in there all day? Perhaps he’s slowly mining blocks of stone out of his home for barracks and shrine-building purposes.

(Screenshot by Esports Edition)

Higher Ground

There are a lot of geomorphologic explanations for why some ground is high and some is low. We know that certain areas on the map have little towers, sort of like sea stacks or hoodoos, that are great for placing wards on top of or cliffing heroes. Each team’s base is built upon a terrace—were these terraces naturally occurring, or created by man hero?

We can likely rule out a continental ice sheet origin. Large-scale glaciations tend to smooth over everything in their path. (Three-mile thick ice will do that.) They often produce rounded hill features called “drumlins.” (Fig. 4)

Figure 4: Drumlin landforms, seen in lidar. (Image via Washington State DNR)

One of the striking things about drumlins is that they usually have an obvious orientation and indicate which direction the glacial ice was flowing.

(Screenshot by Esports Edition)

In contrast, the patches of high ground on the Dota 2 map don’t seem to show any preferred orientation. So let’s rule out glaciation for now.

Another geomorphologic explanation for most of the features is water. A huge flood, to be more precise. Glacial outburst floods, or jökulhlaup in some contexts, are catastrophic releases of water that was either dammed by glacial ice or glacial landforms (or under a glacier). The Missoula Floods are the most well-known example of this in the United States. They created landscapes that look like Figure 5 below.

Figure 5: A landscape carved by a glacial outburst flood. (Photo via Wikipedia. Dota 2 action figure indonesia volcano )

Some of those plateaus look awfully familiar, don’t they? I think this hypothesis is a more fitting explanation for Dota’s various cliffs, plateaus, and terraces.

Climatic Zones

The stark transition between the Radiant and the Dire side is fairly abrupt. Once you cross the river from Dire, you’re in a lush paradise. We can propose that the Dire side was recently scorched by some rampant wildfires which weren’t able to cross the river. Perhaps these fires were set off by some lava (or Razor’s lightning).

Economic Geology

Dota uses gold as a currency, so there’s clearly some gold available somewhere in the general region. Perhaps the reason why heroes gain gold constantly is because they all have mineral prospects somewhere in the area and their prospects are continually producing.

If, like me, wondering about the Dota terrain keeps you up at night, you finally have some reasonable explanations for how it all formed. Next time you’re 20 kills ahead and the enemy team is feeding, stop and take a look around at the landscape.

If I’ve piqued your curiosity and you’d like to learn more about the geological processes I’ve presented here (or argue your own hypotheses about how the terrain in Dota was formed), drop me a line on Twitter!
