Vitalii “v1lat” Volochai made his English commentary debut yesterday at DOTA Summit 9. Despite his ridiculously long career in the esports field and his thousands of hours spent commentating or creating content for the Russian speaking Dota 2 community, V1lat’s apparitions for the English viewers are scarce, most of them being interviews he gave through his career.

V1lat is the only Russian speaking commentator who was at TI1 for instance. However, due to his absolute dedication to Dota2, he is a well-known personality for the western Dota fans also. Still, we had to reach the 2018 year to finally see him officially joining the broadcast for an English stream.

After his first day spent commentating six games in English, V1lat made a lengthy post on his Telegram account where he compared the Russian with the English community feedback he got. During the stream yesterday, he said, he received a couple of messages from his close friends who had only helpful things to say to him. He’s also been pleasantly surprised to see all his couch colleagues helping him after every game.

“It is very difficult,” V1lat starts his Telegram post. “You have to reboot your brain, to try to get rid of all the habits stuck into your head for the past 10 years spent commentating in Russian. You have to force yourself to think in English, to get used to your new colleagues and I had to overcome the fear that I naturally had before going live,” he added in the opening part of the post. After that, he explained how helpful everyone was at the BTS house, how he felt more relaxed with every game he commentated, to end the day on a positive note with the BTS staff people showing him a Reddit thread where everyone was just happy to finally see him on the English stream. On Twitter, he said, he got over 100 comments in English from people who wanted to show their support.

Then he opened the Russian social media to find out that he got negative and extremely toxic comments from the CIS Dota 2 fans.

“And then you read the Russian feedback about your work on the English stream… “Shame”, “F****ng, “Freak”, “ffs, why did you go there”, “talking bullshit”, ”get him out”, “love Summit, but because of this m-f-ker can’t watch it anymore, “my ears are bleeding” and dozens of more posts like these on different platforms.”

Unfortunately, the Russian outrage is extremely bad timed for V1lat who only recently opened a studio of his own, Maincast. The biggest coverage of an event so far for Maincast were the TI8 qualifiers and the studio did extremely well, most of the times being the Russian stream with the biggest viewership.

One goal we have for Dota 2 is to have as many people playing and enjoying the game as possible. To do so, we suspected we’d need to encourage behaviors that have positive effects on the game and community and discourage behaviors that have the opposite effect – like causing other players to play less or not at all or to discourage them from trying out the game in the first place. One of the things we also suspected was that we wouldn’t be able to tackle that kind of problem without releasing the game – it’s the sort of thing where you need a lot of data to know whether or not your changes are having any effect.

Now that Dota 2 has been out for a while, and gathering a nice mix of new and original Dota 1 players, we’re able to gather data to find answers. One of the first things we dug into were the factors that contributed to a player quitting. While it might seem obvious that someone is more likely to quit if they have a negative experience in a game, we’ve learned in the past that we really need to test our assumptions to make sure we’re not fixing the wrong thing. Interestingly, some of the factors we assumed would affect leaving didn’t – for instance, the outcome of matches doesn’t correlate at all to the likelihood of quitting. Losing a bunch of Dota 2 games doesn’t seem to cause people to quit. But one thing that did stand out in the data was the amount of negative communication between players. Put simply, you are more likely to quit if there is abusive chat going on in your games.

So, further investment in discouraging negative communications seemed like it would be valuable. But where to draw the line? Should we allow all (potentially) abusive behavior in-game, or should we work to diminish it and push players more towards the positive and collaborative side of things? We don’t want to restrict anyone’s speech nor prevent anyone from speaking their mind, but for everyone who feels slighted by their inability to say exactly what they want to their teammates or opponents in-game, there is someone on the receiving end of that criticism who is having just as bad an experience (or worse).

After some discussion internally, we reached the decision that it seemed in the best interest of the Dota community to not push away players who actually enjoyed the game. As a consequence, this meant restricting the ability for some members of the community to say whatever they want. To put it another way, we only want people to quit playing if they actually just don’t like the game. That thinking led us to the current communication ban system. Its goal is to reduce the toxicity that occurs verbally or via text chat, and as a result, to avoid causing players to quit the game solely due to negative communication experiences.

Now that it’s been live for over a month, we’re able to see some of the effects it’s having, and the conversation the community is having around it, and we felt we should answer some of the questions we’re seeing out there and pass on some of the data we have.

First, a couple of notes on the implementation:

• Multiple people ganging up on you to report you in the same game has no effect on whether or not you are banned. We are looking at patterns of behavior over time only.
• If you are currently communication banned, any communication reports you receive in that time period do not contribute towards, nor result in additional bans.

The system is not yet ideal, but we felt it was better to gather data on this first step before trying to complicate it with extra nuance. We’ve changed the algorithm several times already, and we’ll continue to update it in response to the community’s feedback, and the data we’re gathering.

The most common question we get is why we added the communication ban system when we already have an in-game muting system. Shouldn’t players who don’t like what they’re hearing just mute the speaker? Ignoring the side problems around some players not knowing about muting, and that the damage is often done before you know you should mute someone else, the real problem with the muting approach is that it doesn’t provide strong feedback to the speaker. Some of our earlier data showed us that offensive players can be rehabilitated and that they manage to modify their communication so that they don’t cause negative interactions. To be able to do that though, they need to know when they’re producing negative interactions, and the communication ban system lets them know this. Our data shows this is working exactly as we hoped – many players banned eventually reach a ban free communication style, and the percentage of players being reported for communication bans is dropping over time.

We also hear from users reporting false reports and unwarranted bans, and when we investigate them we typically see that they’re unaware of how they are coming across to other players in-game. The perspective one has over what is or isn’t warranted or abusive varies by player, and that’s one of the reasons why we’ve tried to build a system where the community gets to own the definition of abuse, and the community’s overall decision finds its way back to the people who cross over the line. We’ll continue investigating these claims to make sure the system is working as intended, but ultimately, this system is not designed to please everyone, and our data makes us believe that even those banned by it are better served by the positive effect their lack of speech has on the community’s health.

A few statistics:

• Since the ban system has been implemented, there’s been a 35% drop in negative communication interactions.
• Less than the 1% of the active player base (players who have played Dota 2 in the last month) are currently banned.
• 60% of players who receive bans go on to modify their behavior and don’t receive further bans.
• Total reports are down more than 30%, even after accounting for the reduction in the number permitted per week.

Overall, we’re happy with how the system is proceeding. The communication ban system was an attempt to remove a specific set of behaviors in the community, and given its harshness and the change in expectations it engendered, it was always going to be something that was met with criticism. As is often the case, there’s still a lot of work to do, but the early results are promising.

Support Morph

Morphling is one of the most versatile and devastating carries in this version of dota, with rapid farming, multipush, mobility, escape, and DPS potential. However, morphling is also a very powerful support hero, with a 325 damage AoE nuke/blink, 3s stun, massive HP pool with strength morph, and awesome steroid, anticarry, and mobility skill with replicate.

Plus, morphling has the ability to basically switch from hard support to one of the hardest carries in the game with an ethereal blade pickup.

Item/skill justification

As always, we max our nuke at 7. I like picking adaptive strike during the roaming phase to give me a ministun to block channeling spells, but priority is on waveform. Your ulti is very valuable to create a meatsheild for pushing, copy of a carry for your own team, or as a TP to minimize time wasted walking/as an escape. You will be walking around with pretty much full strength morph, making you very hard to burst/catch out, especially since you have waveform and the ability to morph to your replicate. You do everything a crystal maiden does but better.

Armor items are important to maximize your giant health pool, and tranquil boots are great for that as well as movespeed. You don’t need more than 1/2 points in morph early to get your HP maxed. A fast mek prov >

Gameplay

You have a 3s stun and giant nuke on very short cooldowns. It should be very easy for you to set up ganks early. You are also pretty farm independent as you won’t be rightclicking for much. Blink or waveform adaptive strike initiation is very good. Waveform and agility morph make you capable of jungling very well compared to most other supports, so you can bring in additional gold to your team.

If at any point you start getting a major farm advantage, which is very possible giving how good waveform/replicate is for flash farming, it is super easy for you to switch into a carrying mode.

As always if you questions/comments/criticisms post them. I’m sure I’ll get some interesting responses at this suggestion, but really: I urge you to try it — not only is it fun but very effective.

The International 2019 is over and at the end of a tough battle, it was OG that held the Aegis high. Not only did OG get a second Ti championship, but they did it back-to-back. A lot of people are still talking about Dota 2‘s biggest tournament and the roster shuffle that followed.

During the tournament, there were a number of plays that caught the attention of both fans and players. One of these was the Io carry strat that OG pulled out for the tournament. In today’s guide we look at what OG did that made it work.

To start off, the Io as a carry strategy is not new. It has been done before, though it has been mainly limited to pubs. This is likely one of those rare moments when such a strat was done in a tournament as large as TI. Io has typically been seen as a right-click heavy carry, though not many have managed to find success with it. This resulted in the hero being mainly used for support. However, even then Io was infamous for being an imbalanced lane support hero, resulting in a nerf.

Going back to using Io as a carry, many players focus on making the hero as a pure damage-dealing core. OG instead made Io a utility carry and proof is that the team used Io in five games and won all of them. So how did OG do it? Here are some of the things that OG did to ensure the win:

Strong Dual-Lane

In the initial part of the game, despite OG’s ana playing Io as position 1 or 2, they used him the way you would a support. Thus, OG made sure to pair Io with Elder Titan or Tiny. The reason is simple since these heroes get the benefit offered by Io’s Tether. This allowed the tethered heroes to be able to trade well with their lane opponents.

Focus on Farming

With the other hero taking care of the lane, this allowed Io to focus on farming. If the other hero had problems in the lane, Io could simply return and tether. By not focusing solely on lanes, this also allowed Io to be able to join fights when needed. One important thing that others missed is how ana made sure to get Helm of the Dominator. This allowed ana to take control of another unit like an Alpha Wolf, Tether to it, and utilize the farming aspect.

If you’re still a bit confused, here’s what the Tether skill does:

Tethers Io to an allied unit, granting bonus movement speed to both. When Io restores health or mana, tethered units target gains a larger portion of that amount. The tether breaks when the allied unit moves too far away, or Io cancels the tether.

That means as long as Io has a unit it Tethers to, the sustain is always present, especially when it comes to farming.

Timing is Key

Now before we discuss the importance of farming, we first need to look at another one of Io’s skills, which is Spirts. What this skill does is:

Summon five particle spirits that dance in a circle around Io. If a particle collides with an enemy hero, it explodes, damaging and slowing all enemy units in an area around it. Creeps take minor damage from touching a particle spirit, but do not cause them to explode. When its duration ends, any remaining Spirits explode.

So why is farming important? Because it ensures that Io get two important timings. The first is that farming allows Io to get the needed gold in order to buy Aghanims Scepter. In their games, ana managed to get Ags within 15-20 minutes. Note that in those five games, OG won in an average of around 28 minutes.

Spirits is a good skill, but is an active one. What Ags does for Io is that Spirits now passively spawns around the hero constantly every second for a maximum of five. This effectively gives the hero “unlimited” spirits.

The second timing is just as important. By the time Io gets the Ags, the hero should hit Level 15. If not, the team should allow Io to get Tome of Knowledge. Reaching Level 15 is important since Io now gets access to his second talent tree. Rather than go for the +8 Health Regen, ana went for the +75 Spirits Hero Damage.

With this upgrade, the base hero damage of Spirits is 20/40/60/80. With the Level 15 Talent, this becomes 95/115/135/155. Remember that damage is for each spirit. Combine that damage output with the fact that Spirits now passively spawn around Io.

Once Io hits these timings, the other items are merely formalities, so to speak. You can go for Maelstorm if you want increased damage or Heart of Tarrasque for improved sustain.

With these wins, it will come as no surprise if a number of a number of players on pubs are going to try out the strat. If you do, there is one important takeaway to OG’s Io strat. The strat puts heavy emphasis on team play. You need to have a good team behind you if you plan on using Io as a carry. On the other side of the coin, if a team member wants to play as Io, then make sure that player gets the needed help in order to reach the needed timings.

The Road to the Aegis
Congratulations to Team Liquid, Grand Champions at The International 2017.

Team Liquid were one of six direct invites to this year’s tournament, arriving in Seattle with high expectations built upon strong results at recent events.

Captained by a veteran who has competed in The International every year, Liquid established themselves early and never lost a series in the Group Stage. They scored 2-0 victories off of iG. Vitality, Fnatic, Infamous, Team Empire, and Team Secret; and earned 1-1 draws against EG, LGD, and TNC to finish with a group-best record of 13-3.

The main stage, however, would present a more daunting challenge, as Team Liquid stumbled to a 1-2 loss at the hands of Invictus Gaming in the Upper Bracket Quarterfinals.

The loss dropped them into the Lower Bracket and set up a do-or-die run through a string of six straight elimination series, forcing Liquid to outlast an aggressive Team Secret, send home an Empire squad that had bested EG, and overcome a relentless VP in one of the most intense matchups of the tournament.

Not done yet, Liquid’s next elimination series saw them draft some lesser-used heroes to down LGD 2-0 and reach a Lower Bracket Finals vs Group B’s strongest team — LFY. Despite losing a drawn-out Game 1, Liquid held fast against LFY for a 2-1 series victory and a trip to the Grand Finals, where Upper Bracket winners Newbee were already waiting.

There, Team Liquid would perform the first-ever Grand Finals sweep in The International’s history, besting Newbee’s elite lineup 3-0 to claim the Aegis of Champions and secure their status as world’s best.

As bearers of the ultimate symbol of victory in the struggle between Radiant and Dire, these names shall forever be inscribed upon the Aegis’ silver plaque:

Dota 2 International: The world’s biggest gaming prize pool

The International, the highest paying esports tournament in the world, begins today in Shanghai. Here’s all you need to know about the event.

What is this tournament?

The International, aka TI, is the world championship tournament of the video game Dota 2. It is, and has been every year since 2013, the highest-paying esports tournament in the world.

This year is the ninth edition of the International, which began in 2011, so it is known colloquially as TI9.

Sorry, what’s esports?

Competitive video gaming.

It’s becoming increasingly popular, with players streaming to fans over Twitch, and tournaments in several different games offering multimillion-dollar prizes.

We reported on the hype and attraction of TI6 three years ago if you’re interested in seeing what the grand finals event is like, or check out these two Kiwis who had hoped to win the Fortnight World Cup last month.

So, how much money is at stake this time?

More than $US32,986,815.

Unlike most other esports, the prize pool for this tournament has since 2013 been partly based on in-game sales of the ‘Compendium’, with 25 percent of the sale price going back to support the pros.

As of now The International 2019 prize pool represents approximately 72% of all earnings in Dota 2 since the last TI.

It also gives players access to various in-game cosmetics, a fantasy league, collectible player ‘cards’ and other stuff for fans.

This has meant the prize value each year has been higher than the last. It has already surpassed last year’s and as sales are still going on, the prize pool could yet climb higher.

Where is it being held?

Shanghai’s 18,000-seat Mercedez-Benz arena in China. Dota 2 the international 2012 grand finals of gerfphil Although Dota 2 is hugely popular in China, this is the first year The International has been held there, though there have been high-profile Dota tournaments in China before

The first one in 2011 was in Cologne, then it was in Seattle for six years. Last year it was in Vancouver, Canada, when Seattle’s Key Arena went under construction.

The 18 Chinese players far outnumber the number of players from other regions, with the nine Philippines players the second-most.

In some quirk of fate too, the winning team has gone back and forth between a Western-based team and a Chinese-based team every year until last year when Chinese team LGD lost the grand final to EU team OG.

Don’t let those labels fool you, either. Many teams will be based in one country but have players from several other countries and regions.

Wait. Did you say $32 MILLION!?

Yep. It’s a lot of money for playing a video game.

As it stands, the winning team of five players will get a total of at least $US15,009,001 this year, second place more than $US4,288,286 and so on.

Okay, what game is it?

Dota 2, a game with more than 10 million monthly active players.

In this game, two AI-controlled armies continually run at each other trying to attack one another’s fortresses, defended by powerful but destroyable towers.

The two teams of five players pilot hero units to swing the tide of this battle by earning money from destroying the armies and the opposing heroes, eventually attacking and destroying the enemy’s base. If they die, they come back after a delay.

If you’ve never played it can be a bit confusing to watch, but the strategy and skill involved is at an extremely high level.

It’s also a free game, and spending money on it does not give you any advantages – so anyone with a computer can simply sign in and start playing.

So. how do I win all this money?

Basically, you can’t.

First off, the players are professionals – that is, playing this game is their job. They work year-round for team organisations, often with big sponsorship deals (one of the leading Chinese teams, LGD is sponsored by Paris Saint-Germaine).

The teams are often player-owned companies, run by the players, for the players. They have coaches (usually former players themselves) and often have strict schedules for play and training for hours every day. Many have diets and daily workout regimes, to keep their reflexes quick.

To get to this tournament, players had to train like this to be good enough to be recognised, join a team, then do well enough in other, smaller tournaments throughout the year to be seeded/invited to this main one, or by winning a regional qualifier.

However, if you work very hard and play thousands, THOUSANDS of hours of Dota, it’s just possible you could compete next year.

Does New Zealand have any players?

There are a couple of Australian players (OG player ana and Mineski’s kpii), but most of the top players in our South East Asia region are based in Philippines and Malaysia, where the game is very popular in internet cafes.

How does the tournament work? What’s the format?

Group stage: Starting at 1pm today (NZ time), until Sunday 18 August, the 18 teams are divided into two groups, who play best-of-two match-ups in a round-robin format.

Main event: The bottom team in each group is eliminated while the top four teams in each group advance to the Upper Bracket. The remaining eight teams go to a lower bracket.

Lower-bracket teams are progressively knocked out, while upper-bracket teams get knocked down to the lower bracket. These are all best-of-three matchups except the first round of the lower bracket, which is single matches.

The grand final, on Sunday 25 at 6pm (NZ time) is a best-of-five (although the upper bracket finals will also start that day about 2.40pm).

Who are the favourites?

It’s looking a fairly tight competition. According to esportsbettingtop, Team Secret are the favourites to win, but Vici Gaming, Team Liquid, Virtus. Pro, Evil Geniuses, and PSG. LGD are all strong contenders.

Secret’s captain Clement “Puppey” Ivanov was on the winning team Na’VI at the first TI, came second in 2012 and ’13, but has not been able to reach those heights at this main tournament again despite being one of just two players to qualify with a team every year.

The team was expected to do very well last year too, but only reached eighth place in a big upset.

The International is always a bit unpredictable.

It’s that drama, combined with the skill of the players, the spectacle of the arena, the complexity of the strategy – and, of course, the memes – which makes this game so fun to watch.

Where can I watch it?

Since many of us can’t make it to Shanghai, there’s a range of options for watching it. You can either jump into the free game app on a computer and watch it there, check out the streams on streaming platform Twitch, or look into attending one of the ‘Pubstomp’ live viewing events in bars across the world.
