What Is Dota Auto Chess And Why Is Everyone Playing It?

Share

If you believe the internal tracking in the Dota 2 client, upwards of 70,000 concurrent players are engaging in a single custom map: Dota Auto Chess. It’s definitely not chess, and although the characters share some similar abilities to Dota 2 counterparts, it’s absolutely not Dota either. Instead, Dota Auto Chess is a turn-based tactical strategy game that pits you against seven other players in round after round of resource-management action – you won’t need any APM to compete here, as all the units do battle on their own after you place them.

Players begin simply by picking a single unit from a selection of five. After that, options expand rapidly as the game gets under way, as your population cap and unit choices grow larger. You can pick any units you like as long as you have the gold and space, and that’s where team-composition strategy comes in. Putting units of the same race and class together has powerful and often game-deciding effects. For instance, a team stacked with mages will cause the opposing team’s magic resistance to greatly decrease, meaning your spells will absolutely ravage them. Assassin stacks get giant crits, knights get shields, mechs regen, hunters get massive damage boosts – you get the idea. Dota 2 basics youtube Mixing and matching race/class combinations to stack all kinds of bonuses and effects is critical to success. Other race/class combos offer more interesting synergy, like druids being able to “rank up” using fewer units than others. Ranking up is an important aspect of the game and another layer of strategy, as it makes your characters much more powerful.

To rank up, you’ll need three of the same unit, which is made more difficult if everyone in your game is trying to play the same races/classes, so it’s to your benefit to try and seek out lesser-played characters in order to rank them up easier. Everyone draws from the same unit pool, so if everyone wants to stack mages, those players will crumble easily as they struggle to rank up units while the knight player gets all the uncontested rank ups to themselves.

In addition to attempting to forge the best team, keeping an eye on your funds is critical. You get money from wins, win streaks, lose streams, and interest each round. You can sandbag early on and take some losses and damage to try to get a big interest stack kicking, but try and tempt fate too much and you may lose the game before your big stack of cash starts providing meaningful dividends.

Each round you face a random opponent from whoever is remaining in the game, until there’s only one left standing. Placing in the top three will net you some candy, which you can use to unlock cosmetics you can use from game to game. After a few games, you’ll also get a ranking based on chess pieces, like pawn, knight, or bishop, and this will go up and down as you continue to play games.

Every so often the custom map scene has a mod that catches fire. While its longevity remains to be seen, if you’re into this sort of strategy experience, you can play it for free inside the Dota 2 client (which is free) on Steam, so I recommend giving it a shot. It’s not chess, and it’s not Dota, but it’s a great game to queue up and play with friends or solo. It takes a few games to start to understand how everything works, but it’s got some really fun strategy hooks underneath everything. 11 Treasures of the Lockless Luckbox: Market Watch Dota2

Added microplush update price list to bottom

Update post diretide: After the Diretide patch that has introduced socketing and crafting, (perhaps making the pink puppy swing in price) the lockless luckbox have tanked and became the luckless lockbox at $40 from its above $100 golden days. This may in part be due to the craftable genuines items, that will give you the same item except without the green genuine tag. Nyx dagon has fallen to $50, Heaven Piercing Pauldrons at $70 shadow blade to $100 (time of writing). For some items, there isn’t much difference between genuine and non genuine in price. Recipes go for quite a bit too. Is this Valve’s way of cooling the market? Guess the original caution below was useful! Don’t think this is insider trading happening in Valve markets, since microplush ball flood would have changed prices too.

PSA reminder: markets have moved, don’t take figures here to be indicative, do your own due diligence. it has been brought to my attention the brewmaster tshirt is back in stock and is moving at a much slower pace off the valve shelves than previously, lockless luckbox prices have also come down with nyx dagon coming down even more (i think it was at low 100s coming off its around 200 high) open your eyes before dipping into the waters! don’t get swept away or carried away betting more than you can afford to lose
you may be locked into the lockless luckbox until brewmaster supply dries up, which it may not, turning it into a luckless lockbox

The lockless luckbox is an item that is provided with real life merchandise from steam, and can be opened up in game to give you an item (like the steelseries mouse and kantusa). It goes for about $110 on the steam market, but is technically obtainable for about $10. Why then do people pay so much? I keep thinking of it as the luckless lockbox, just juxtaposing the o and the u around.

At this point, there are a few items that gives the lockless luckbox from the steam store, in varying states of availability as well as various prices. It ranges from the Valve Plush Balls (pokeballs) at about $9.90 to $29.90 T Shirt and $49.90 Polo Ts and $79.99 Trackjacket. Generally once they restock they will be sold out fast as people buy them from the lockbox. Previously, they first appeared at the Seattle shop during the international, where people naturally swooped in onto them for the exclusivity.

The contents are all worth quite a bit, and can be priced into tiers. I will use the dota2wiki as the reference for the loot drop contents, and assume that drop rates are even. (They should all be classed as genuine mythical, green)

Tier 3, for those below $100 i. e. you don’t want to get one of these if you bought a $100 luckless lockbox from the steam market: Broken Shackles (market) and Prisoner’s Anchor (market) for alchemist, Aether Wings (market) for Puck also obtainable via the Puck T shirt, Frost Owl Beacon (market) for Crystal Maiden, Crest of the Wyrm Lords (market) for Dragon Knight, Armlet of Mordiggan (market) for Chaos Knight and Crown of the Death Priestess (market) for DP.

They range about $50 to $80, so if you bought the plush balls, tshirts and up to the polo Ts its about okay. You will lose a bit due to the steam taxes, but you get a shirt or a micro plushie to hug. (Or you could sell the lockbox for $100). Getting the shackles would probably make it a luckless lockbox if you had purchased it from the market however. The Dragon Knight shield and the Alchemist anchor approaches the top end at about $80 to $90. Previously the DK shield looked uglier. The prices weren’t always like this too, with Aether wings in more prosperous times above $150.

Tier 2, Above $100, we get only one entry for this: Heaven Piercing Pauldrons (market) for Invoker

This is an item I really don’t get, as its fetching a very high price of $160 when it doesn’t have any spell changes. You just get pointier shoulders… or perhaps that’s the point. Maybe it /pokes the heavens, or icefrog

People’s gonna pay what they wanna pay I guess, payers will be payers (alternatively, it could be a low drop rate)

Tier 1, Around $200: Nyx Assassin’s Dagon and Kunkka’s Shadow Blade.

We now move on to the heavy hitters of the luckless lockbox set. These make the luck in the luckbox.

The sheer $$$ of the nyx dagon is summed up by the video

On top of Dagon humiliation (refer to nerfnow), it’s also a $190 Dagon slap

Zap–$190 or prevailing market price

It’s a different story if you’re the one who opened your lockless luckbox and got a nyx dagon though! You’re now rich! Richer that is. Sort of. You could sell it, or start playing Nyx Assassin. Either way you sort of get your moneys worth. I suppose it could be rich saudi arabian princes who sweep up the dagons on the market and go around pub games zapping people.

Or you could go for Kunkka if you have his shadow blade.

Kunkka wields a shadowblade dripping with purple fluids

No gif at the dota wiki, but they have closeups: http://dota2.gamepedia. Lockless lockbox dota 2 youtube com/Kunkka%27s_Shadow_Blade

At its peak it fetched a princely sum of $310.13. (its a bit higher than it would be due to taxes, which would be $270)

It tried to pierce the ceiling of 300 bucks and it did. Today it goes for a slightly more terrestial price of $250.

I guess time and tide waits for no admiral!

And that’s that for the luckless lockboxes, if all drop rates are equal, it comes to about $102.50 roughly as the price value per luckless lockbox. Its probably quite the deal or steal if you can get the physical dota items with a digital item unlock lockless luckbox. If you’re buying it off the market above $100++ however, I suppose the question to ask is “do you feel lucky?”

Update, luckless lockbox has fell even further to $60+, probably due to rumors of huge stock of micro plushies (valve pokeballs) on their way. Those would be about $10 unless prices are increased.

The prices in the old guide is outdated, but the graphs aren’t very helpful now with the new landscape. (you can make non genuine versions from recipes)

Old Price, New Price

Aether Wings (market) for Puck also obtainable via the Puck T shirt,

Really? Ana carrying OG alone?
No hating on Ana whatsoever (I really think he has the potential) but saying Ana can carry OG alone is a joke.

On the other hand, I do think Suma1l is THAT good and (IMO) he can be considered to be one of the best Mid ever (arguably; biased opinion).

Sorry, what I meant was he has the potential to be better, I know that he’s good, but saying that he can carry OG alone (whatever the case may be) is quite ridiculous tbh. You can’t deny the fact that OG plays around him, and both Fly and NoTail is building the hype around him (referring to the TrueSight alone).

Nevertheless, great article, and i do hope that Artour breaks his TI curse, although a top 3 finish would make me happy (for me at least).

So does EG with Suma1L, they play around him so he can shine and carrry the team most of the time. That’s why RTZ sucks right now, he has to play more sacrificial carry, like Fear did back then, and he’s not used to it.

In MDL I rarely saw him lose lanes. I think he’s hitting that point wherein you really can’t say his laning is the weakness.

my nitpick is that arteezy would definitely play venomancer and razor in the past.
i hate to say it this way, but i think he enjoyed playing venomancer particularly.
i have followed and studied him as a player for a long time and i don’t think he has changed very much since the beginning, unless we are purely talking about his willingness to give up farm. i think that only changed because it is now the requirement and still happens to be something that he truly excels at more than most.

We will never see dominant mids actually displaying their superior 1v1 skills (ie Sumail, Arteezy, etc) like the past, unless Icefrog goes back and revert changes since 6.72 Comeback-Mechanic era. Dota 2 1v1 ti5 results A majority of changes since then have devalued early game laning-stage, in favor of late-game, midgame, and teamfighting. So I get dominated by the other mid now, then what? I go heal at the shrine. How can you shine as a mid when you both have get-out-of-jail cards ala shrine? Even before shrine you had silly shit like double runes so whichever way you went top/bot you didn’t really lose much or gain much against the other guy you supposedly owned or lost to. I think this is why Arteezy doesn’t want to go back mid and is comfortable playing carry, why go mid when your superior mechanical skill doesn’t even matter much?

Think about the offlane when it used to be fairly suicidal, it was easier to notice who was a truly good offlane because you didn’t have shrine and other stuff that got you out of jail. If you shined as an offlane back in the day you really stood out, now there are so many bandaids that even if you are a good offlane there are others that shine too because of said bandaids.

The Case For Random Draft

wings. iceice spamming Random Draft before his DPL matches.

There was a time, back in Dota 1, when Random Draft was the premier mode for tryhard players. It was back when – apem—all pick, easy mode—was the rampant game type. It was a mode that encouraged players to instant pick their favorite or meta heroes, and accelerate through the early game because of inflated gold and XP gain from “easy mode.” APEM incentivized picking late-game cores, because they didn’t have to deal with the disadvantages of a poor, early-game. “Easy mode” generated enough gold such that it wasn’t a detriment to have five cores on your team. Everyone would get their items and levels.

It’s a familiar, less extreme story for all-pick in today’s game. Players constantly hover over their carousel of their 2-3 favorite heroes—usually cores, and usually the heroes of the meta. Dota 2 random draft swap shop Support players are few and far between, and you’re lucky if you have one of them. One tip to circumvent the all-core syndrome of pubs, recommended by Kawaiisocks, is to declare that you’re playing a jungler, forcing one player to play the 5th support, then turning around and picking a support player yourself so your team would have now have two of them. That’s the kind of trickery that’s often needed to have a Dota game look at all remotely like one that’s played on a serious level.

And yet All-Pick is the mode for tryhard, MMR climbers. Before banning, it wasn’t uncommon to see page after page of the same 2-3 heroes spammed. With the introduction of bans, that selection is a tad wider, but the mindset remains the same. Play the best heroes to win the game.

As players drift towards All Pick for ranked matchmaking, they’re missing out on essential ways they can improve their Dota game through Random Draft. This isn’t the case for regions like EUW and China, where Random Draft queue times aren’t far greater than All Pick.

Improv To Improve

When wings. gaming won TI6, the team was lauded for the breadth of their hero pool, the versatility of their players, and their ability to adapt on the spot. RD is a mode that forces players to think on their feet, to decide with limited options. There were few things you could take away from that wings. gaming team that would have rattled them.

It’s no secret that Random Draft is the premier mode for Chinese players, both pub players and professionals. The entire wings team hammers out pages of RD games between their pro matches. China’s meta used to be the hallmark of stale and trite playstyles, to their own detriment, but for a while now, the region has been the breeding ground for new strategies and picks.

Pub players play All Pick, because by nature of the mode they want the choice of picking their favorite heroes. For ranked matchmaking, that also means the best and strongest heroes. That’s good for practice, but players who aspire to get better at Dota by playing the heroes pros play are often forgetting another side of the game.

Without a draft, All Pick is more or less the same every game, and it’s not just because people pick meta heroes, or what’s left of them after the bans, but it’s about the kind of people who are inclined to do so in the first place. They’re fixed in the heroes they pick, the heroes that others should pick, and overall, how Dota should be played. Conjoin this mindset with the drive to climb MMR and you’re left with a mindset leaves little room for flexibility and an openness to try something new.

Thinking Outside The Box

Wings did not shy away from picking a Techies and Pudge in the upperbracket finals of TI6.

Random Draft limits your toolbox of heroes and forces players to make do with what they have. Instead of starting with picking the best heroes, players have to think holistically and pick in context. A pool may still include some of the best heroes, but it has a limited choice of solid offlaners. Or there could be a few hero synergies that outweigh the benefit of nabbing that meta hero.

Random Draft’s advantage is that it can strike a balance between the amount of choice it gives players. The current pool of 50 may be too large, such that it can cater to even the most limited players. And while All Pick guarantees bans on the most flagrant heroes of the meta, in RD there’s a decent chance you’ll end up with a few of them. There is a delicate balance here, since attempting to reduce the hero pool also risks leaving teams without sufficient counters.

However, compare the mode to either CM (Captain’s Mode) or CD (Captain’s Draft). Random Draft allows heroes that aren’t currently in CM, making the mode a quick, experimental playground. But the reality behind both CM and CD is that the average player can’t Captain, doesn’t know how to draft, and there isn’t enough time to combine mental resources to prepare. Forcing one player to head the draft ends up being the blind leading the blind.

The commonality between the Captain’s modes and All Pick is that its players aspire to play a game that hews to what a professional game looks like. They’re picking the heroes that they saw their favorite players play, or they’re trying to draft EG’s winning lineups. They’re copying without understanding.

Playing With Humility

One of the largest frustrations with playing Dota, and the root cause of most flame wars, is when play doesn’t meet expectations. It’s always about what should have happened. No one plays perfect Dota, with pub players by far more distant than this ideal, yet a missed spell cast or a lapse in judgment on positioning more often leads to finger pointing than an acceptance that most of us are just average Dota players fumbling in the dark.

It’s that great Dota is so close to us. It’s in replays just one tab away in the client and on Twitch streams everyday. And people play pubs with an expectation that they can approximate that kind of play. At Dotabuff we often see hero popularity spike based off one tournament’s meta. Dota 2 random draft swap shop

Random Draft off the bat puts a handicap on all players. They’re required to take a step back, away from the mindset of let’s do exactly what the best players do, and instead try to make the best of what we have in front of us. There’s a shared understanding, and it tends to generate a more cohesive team environment. Losing isn’t the fault of one captain’s draft or one player’s mistakes.

Random Draft’s Current Problems

The issues with Random Draft is that it there aren’t enough people playing it. There aren’t enough players outside of China. Dota 2 random draft swap shop The mode might suffer the same fate as Captain’s Draft, when it didn’t have enough players. Games had a large variance in MMR, and the limited player pool opened up doors for others to abuse and exploit MMR.

The bright side is that players don’t have to pick just one mode for ranked matchmaking. They can still select multiple modes and queue for all the lines. If players who aim to climb MMR really want to get better at Dota, each mode has something to offer. Where All Pick is about approximating how good Dota looks, Random Draft is about how good players should think.

Basic Gam eplay

If you’ve ever played any sort of RTS, then the basic layout of LoL and Dota should be at least somewhat familiar. These are top-down games where you control your champion or hero alongside four other players in five-on-five fantasy action.

Left-clicking selects units while right-clicking moves your character or attacks. League of Legends uses Q, W, E and R for your main abilities with D and F reserved for summoner spells. Items are assigned to 1-6 by default. Dota 2 does things a little differently with the number keys reserved for control groups—similarly to StarCraft—and Z, X, C, V, B and N bound to your item slots. Some champions with more than four abilities also require the use of other keys like D and F.

Last hitting—delivering the killing blow to a minion—is likely the most fundamental skill you’ll have to learn to play either game. Last-hitting minions is your primary means of accruing gold. Wait until the minion gets low enough for you to kill it with a single attack before you hit it. You’ll still earn a slow trickle of gold over time, but killing a few extra minions can be the difference between buying the item that you need or missing out on XP for nothing.

It’s raining bloody gold!

LoL and Dota 2 do differ in how they reward players for killing players. In both games, killing an enemy player grants gold to everyone who participated in the kill. In League of Legends, the amount of gold a player is worth depends on how many times they’ve died without getting a kill and whether or not they’re on a killing spree. Dota 2 adds to this by punishing the dead player by throwing away some of the unreliable gold that they’ve earned. Reliable gold is awarded for kills while unreliable gold is gained over time and for killing minions.

The distinction between the two types of gold is reason enough to declare that Dota 2 is a far more punishing game. At the same time, getting kills is quite a bit more rewarding than it is in League of Legends because you gain reliable gold while causing an enemy to lose gold. Not only is it easier to make mistakes in Dota 2, but it’s also harder to come back from them.

Every single match of Dota 2 or League begins with the laning phase. This generally lasts from the time that minions spawn to anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes into the game. During this time, carry characters spend their time trying to last hit as well as possible. The goal of laning phase is to earn as much gold as possible while harassing your opponent.

Battles are more frequent and abrupt in Dota 2. Once a team commits to a fight, enemies will be stunned and spells will be unleashed. It usually only takes a second or two for the first casualty in a fight. During a game, it’s not uncommon to see first blood claimed only a few minutes in. Fights in Dota 2 are quite a bit like food fights—you look around to make sure no one’s watching, then let loose a few cups of pudding or an Arcane Bolt or two.

League of Legends is a little less chaotic. The first kill might take place 10 minutes into a match, but that isn’t to say that the game is any slower paced. You’ll be casting your spells far more often than you do in Dota 2 because of LoL’s emphasis on skillshots and low mana costs. Laning is usually a matter of last hitting while throwing out a spell or two to try and push your opponent out of lane.

The later section of both games is reserved for team fighting and coordinated pushes to try and reach the enemy base. As the end of the game approaches, teams usually start to stick together to knock down towers and eventually the base structures—the melee and ranged barracks in Dota 2 and the inhibitors in LoL which strengthens creep waves. Destroying the nexus or ancient is the only way to end the game without forcing a surrender vote.

The ancient—eye of Sauron?—doesn’t react well to being attacked.

Champions/Heroes

Although you’re given control over a single character in both Dota 2 and LoL, the two games have different ideas of what constitutes a hero or champion.

Playing dodge ball with the ground is a lot more fun than it sounds.

Champions in League of Legends are more likely to have skillshots and spells that can be spammed. As a result, LoL focuses not only on traditional, attack damage (AD) carries, but also on ability power (AP) carries. Unlike in Dota 2, you can buy items that increase the damage output of your abilities in LoL. The laning phase in League games usually involve quite a bit more ability-based harass. Poking your opponent with a skillshot or target spell is reasonable because of the low mana costs that accompany most spells. Every single champion in this game has four main, character-specific spells along with room for two summoner spells; Flash is one spell that you’ll see all the time because it lets you jump a short distance in the direction of your cursor.

He’s clearly asking for me to push his buttons.

The comparatively lesser emphasis on skillshots doesn’t mean that Dota 2 isn’t a skill-driven game. It makes up for it by having a diverse pool of heroes that are able to build items to satisfy different roles. Dota heroes have much more explosive power with the ability to execute combos that usually leads to battles that last only a few seconds. These powerful spells come at a cost—the mana required to cast these spells is usually high—which prevents them from being used constantly. Another distinguishing factor of Dota 2’s hero pool is the Invoker—playable proof of the wide variety of heroes available in the game. With a total of 14 abilities at his disposal, the Invoker is considered by many to be the most complex character in any MOBA game. Mixing and matching reagents to invoke new spells demonstrates just how versatile and varied Dota 2 heroes can be.

Next page: A quick peek at the map, metagame and itemization options in both games.

Dota 2 Workshop – Color Texture Light Baking

This gu >olor texture from a high resolution sculpted source and applying it to the low resolution in-game asset.

DEFINING COLOR

  • Dota 2’s in-game lighting is quite subtle and as a result we tend to lose a lot of the sculptural detail in the character’s normal maps.
  • We offset this by baking – or painting – the light into the color texture.

AMBIENT OCCLUSION

Start with the predominant color of the character

Bake an ambient occlusion map (AO Map) of the model.

Multiply the ambient occlusion layer on top of the base color at an 80% opacity.

POINT LIGHT MAP

  • Place a couple of simple white point lights in your scene and render out a light map.
  • You don’t want ambient occlusion in this light pass, just pure point light information, preferably with a material that captures specular highlights.
  • Turn off projected shadows. Typically, multiple point light maps are baked with lights in various positions then blended in Photoshop into one map for more precise control.
  • The point light map captures more sculptural information than is possible with a pure AO map.
  • We bake this map separately from the AO as we want to control the two elements differently.
  • The point light map also gives you a good starting point to introduce your top-to-bottom, light-to-dark gradient.
  • Clamp the shadows so they don’t darken the base map unnecessarily.
  • A 90 90 90 (RGB) screen layer at 85% opacity on top of the point light map is a good place to start.
  • You can group these two layers together to make them easier to blend onto the base map.
  • The point light group is layered above the AO map.
  • Set the point light group’s blending mode to 100% soft light.
  • This constitutes the ‘underpainting’ of the texture. Because we have a strong sculptural base to the texture we don’t need to paint too much in the way of lighting and shadow information.

COLOR MAP

The majority of the painting is done in the color layers.

The color group is blended on top of other layers in overlay mode at 80% opacity.

  • Dota 2 has a very bright and intense palette with lots of saturated colors. Layers with certain blend modes can blow out the palette into unusual colors, so it’s worth clamping shadows and highlights to avoid excessive contrast. How aggressively you do this is best determined on a per character basis.
  • For this character the color layer group was duplicated and given a blending mode of lighten at 30% opacity.

The color layer group was duplicated again and given a blending mode of darken at 50% opacity. This allows the shadows and highlights to be controlled independently.

GRAPHIC PATTERNS

  • Most of Dota’s characters have large crisp graphic patterns to aid legibility.
  • These patterns can be blocked in loosely on the initial rough texture then later enhanced by a masked color layer.
  • A layer mask is created using the lasso tool.
  • Then color is painted on to sharpen edges and make colors more consistent.

Color is loosely painted inside the layer mask to preserve a sharp edge to the design. The blending mode is set to normal at 80% opacity.

FINAL ADJUSTMENTS

Make final adjustments to details like the eye highlights, improve the value gradient overall, and adjust the saturation.

This color texture is now perfectly synched to all of the details in the normal map.

Poof Meepo – the mid game carry

Introduction

Meepo was one of my favorite heroes in Dota 1 and now hes been released in dota 2. He is one of the best farming heroes in the game. He can split push all by him self due to his ultimate ability allowing you to keep all the lanes pushed up if needed.

Pros/Cons

Pros

    Fun
    Huge Nuke damage
    Sorta a Carry
    Earthbind is boss
    ability to farm multiple lanes
    easily able to clear jungle

    Squishy
    Micro oriented
Some times tricky to land skills
can be easily countered with high burst
    extremely low base damage

Play Style

When you first start out in a lane youll notice you have a really low base damage. This makes farming at this stage rather tricky. However, because Meepo is very level dependent rather then item dependent this isn’t such a bad thing. play extremely safe from levels 1-6 because of the low amount of HP you have and your low base damage. You really will only be able to harass if you are laning with some one who has a slow or if they initiate on you at this stage. One thing people usually miss when they first play meepo is that poof can be used with out a clone as an effective aoe nuke. This makes it easy to kill some one who is tower diving you and melee.

When you hit level 6 you’ll be able to start moving around and doing more things. If you can land an earthbind (or your lane partner lands a stun) try to get up as close as possible then spam poof with your main hero and your clone. The idea here is that because you are in melee range you will get both the entrance and exit damage effectively doubling the damage of the spell, I. E. 140 becomes 280 and with the clone it becomes 520. With a point in geostrike you’ll be able to slow them from here and eventually use the poof combo again to finish them off. If they are a particularly fast hero or have invisibility make sure to use both of your earth binds in succession to keep them from running away.

When you either start to loose towers or the other team starts teaming up, start to split your clones and hero up into different lanes. I tend to have my clones all in one lane or split into 2 if I have 4 of them and my hero in another. Even if you aren’t the one farming the gold here you should be able to get double or even triple the xp that a normal hero would get just by being in the lanes. This gives you a huge advantage. If you aren’t the highest level hero in the game after doing this then you are doing something wrong. Also when you get 2 clones it becomes extremely easy to push a lane by your self. You can use your poof to simply kill all the creeps. Doing 800 damage in an aoe makes this extremely easy. Also at this point your geostrike will make finishing off stragglers a breeze.

Advanced clone tactics and skill explanations.

A few people have suggested skilling earthbind after poof and then geostrike. IMO this is extremely situational. If you are faced with invis heroes or heroes with great escape/movement, this can be good to force a hero down into its place as the range on a maxed earth bind is ridiculous. Maxed Geostrike on the other hand allows you to maximize the damage your clones and hero does because all of them stack. (with 2 clones you get 3 separate instances of geostrike on the target, with 3 you’ll have 4 etc.) When coupled with an AC you can slow people better then the zombies from undying’s totem. Imagine getting one strike from 5 meepos on one hero. This is technically a 100% movement slow. This is exactly why when I go for a Geostrike early build ill rush a Scepter.

Because of the nature of this hero, some more advanced tactics can involve sending in a lone meepo or getting a blink dagger and blinking on top of a lone hero while poofing your clones to your meepo to do a surprise amount of damage. This is an extremely effective way of ganking some unsuspecting int/support hero and or low HP carry. This is also the reason why meepo is up with undying on the “anti-gank” category. When some one trys to take out a clump of meepos who are pushing a lane far into enemy territory, it is very easy to poof away and keep pushing a different lane. Think of this like the Morphling ultimate except there is no time limit.

Lastly, I wanted to touch on the reason why i chose Str treds to be the core boots for this build. Meepo has a really low amount of HP naively and because his clones only get the benefit of auras and his boots, using Str treds to boost their hp is very important. Even if you were to get a reaver on meepo, it would only add 8 str to each clone while str treads grant 10 str.

Advanced Blink Dagger Play.

To pull off some of the magic that you can do with a blink dagger requires quite a bit of micromanagement. Due to this, I have decided to devote a complete section to this area. Dota 2 mid or meepo sets A lot of the other guides for meepo center around getting a blink dagger as fast as possible, but i think for pubs, this is wrong simply because the skill required to pull off such a tactic is extremely demanding, that being said, i think its still a reasonable way of playing meepo.

So youve decided to get a blink dagger on meepo and you probably don’t really know where to start with it due to the fact that the original hero only gets its benefits. the Blink dagger meepo gives a lot of versatility to how you can play however, because of its general nature. Imagine if you will seeing a lone meepo running around. Very tempting to gank. But then out of know where, 3 other meepos poof in and you die from the burst or you at least come close to dying. This is the idea behind this tactic. Whether it be offensive or defensive, the blink dagger can be a great tool for meepo.

Here’s the basic technique. activate Poof on all your original meepo, then blink in. If timed correctly when your hero meepo arrives next to the hero you are ganking, the clones will also arrive with a lot of damage. Again, I sa >

Teamfights

Your goal in team fights is to get one of your “heroes” into melee range, whether through earth bind spams or a blink dagger, you can then pull off a full rotation of poof to do a ton of damage to their entire team if they are clumped up enough. Beware though, if one clone dies you die. If one clone starts to loose HP fast, make sure to micro him back out of the fight. If they have high burst you will probably have to make sure you initiate with the main hero and then fall back to a clone you’ve left behind. This can be a very effective method of doing lots of damage and keeping your self alive.

Anyhow, I will continue to update this as I continue to play this hero. Have fun guys.

Introduction

Luna is not the most durable of heroes and thus requires a babysitter in cases where she has to face strong early game heroes.

She has a mini stun but it will not help much early on so don’t bet your life on it. Best to save your mana and use it if a fight breaks out. I have seen many player use lucent beam to push back enemy heroes early on and then ran out of mana when the fight was on.

You need to put a point in your aura at lvl 2 as it will give you the best night vision of all heroes. I have seen many forget this and they prepare to gank just at the edge of your vision without realizing they are close enough for you to see them and call for backup and turn the tide.

Since farming is the key you need lifesteal so get a Morbid Mask after your boots. You can finish it into a Vladimir’s offering later (Manta style was so so nice before 7.00). Mask of Madness is also an option, very handy if you have no contest and need to quickly take down structures and get away with it when they come for you but it’s dangerous as it will silence you so no ult.

Manta Style. Nothing to say here, JUST GET IT, YOU MUST HAVE IT.

When you are on the same team with Night Stalker things can turn your way very quickly as Luna’s ult turns day into night for a few seconds which powers Night Stalker. But try to avoid picking her when facing him as he can take your increased vision away and kill you very quickly.

Luna needs a lot of farm, she mainly blooms in the late game and thus remember to farm, farm, farm and don’t be shy to buy a ward or two to cover your jungle as you farm.

As always keep an eye on the minimap and help your team. Many people focus too much on farming and don’t help out when it matters and the game can be lost by the time Luna gets ready.

Luna’s ult is very powerful so make use of it especially early on. A level 6 ult can take down enemies very fast and it’s very important you take the time to gank a bit with it before they feed or buy blademail as that will kill most times you faster than you can run. A BKB is good to counter this but it’s expensive and you have more important things to buy. it can be a good tactic to BKB and ult the enemy every 230 seconds, but it can also be a killer.

Partner up with multiplayer stunners/rooters such as Faceless Vo >

Items

Manta Style is a must get it.
You also need some life steal.

Because the Moon Glaives bounce and Manta Style just takes it to a whole new level it can be very easy to retreat farm/lifesteal some creeps and get back into the fight.

Skills

Usually it is a good idea to max out Lucent Beam as this hardens your ult and is a good way to kill a weak enemy running from a fight or mini stun them to get in range.

Moon Glaives will help you fight/farm but it will push the lanes if leveled early, but if you face long range heroes you can alternate this with Lucent Beam.

Lunar Blessing you skill one at level 2 for the vision and thereafter just when you don’t have another choice or you avoid leveling the Moon Glaives.

Eclipse points should not be missed unless you have a very good reason for wanting something else instead. Ganks/fights and you need something else more as the cooldown is long.

Talents

The talents shown here are a generic build but as with everything there are situations and situations. Use your best judgement on what to pick based on the heroes you are facing and their items. When you die look at the kill info that opens from the killer image on the left and see what they used against you and also check out the enemy items.

Level 1. Damage is nice when you are on top but armour can save you life. See if the enemies you are fighting against have armour reduction or a lot of armour and get that instead.

Level 2. Lucent beam damage is very good on luna because your ult is simply a large number of Lucent Beams so the stronger it is the stronger your ult is. But as before if you are too squishy and need a tad more health it may be worth the sacrifice.

Level 3. +25 Attack Speed is one of those things that will make your glaives and Manta Style hit that much faster and kill/demolish fast. But if you’re facing heroes with lots of spells Magic resistance is a must.

Level 4. +15 All stats. You don’t need lucent beam every 2 seconds. It’s nice and there may be the case for it, but I haven’t see it yet. Also remember +15 ALL STATS, that is a lot.

Top 10 Dota 2 Carry Heroes in 2018

With Valve just recently releasing its Dota 2 Update 7.18, a number of changes made their way into the making. This includes everything from hero/item alternations to a complete change of the game’s Meta. Heracles dota 2 This means everything we know about the game has changed in some way or the other. so, to better educate our readers of the current Carry heroes of the Meta, we are here with a list of the 10 best Dota 2 Carry Heroes of 2018.

Dota 2 Carry Heroes

The Meta for Dota 2 has changed and we are already seeing some new faces making their mark in the current Meta. Heracles dota 2 However, with Icefrog’s effort to balance the game, he made various changes that completely nerfed some of the most picked heroes while bringing up some that we weren’t used to in a very long time. So, without taking any more of your time, here are the 10 best Carry Heroes in the year 2018.

1. Ursa

Ursa is one of the most popular choices for the role of Carry in the current Dota 2 Meta. Heracles dota 2 This is due to the recent love the developers have shown to the agility based hero. This combined with his extremely powerful, yet tanky abilities make him a true beast in the game.

2. Spectre

Spectre has been a hero which was a consistent pick even before patch 7.19. Though, after the update tides favored Spectre even more. Her desolate has been buffed up giving Spectre more ease in farming, as well as her updated Dispersion, has given her enhanced tankability during team fights.

3. Terrorblade

Terrorblade finally got his place back in competitive Dota 2 with the recent patches. Immediately after, we saw teams picking up the split push carry to their advantage. Terrorblade’s farming, mobility build that professional players tend to make on this hero has allowed him to fit in many situations.

4. Anti-Mage

Well, one cannot just ignore Magina from the competitive scene no matter what. Anti Mage has been a life saver for many professional teams who consider this hero their last resort in times of need. No matter the changes to the Meta, you will still see Anti Mage being picked up by professional teams every no own then.

5. Phantom Lancer

The place of both Phantom Lancer and Anti-Mage is relatively the same. Phantom lancer slightly wins during the current Meta because of his farming abilities as well as his input from early game. Though professional players tend to favor the hero more for split pushing it certainly doesn’t mean Phantom lancer isn’t good in team fights.

6. Gyrocopter

Though there were slight nerfs to the hero, Gyrocopter still remains a solid pick in the competitive scene. The AOE damage burst and lock down abilities of Gyrocopter make him a favorable pick in many matches. Plus, his incredible ability to quickly finish off lanes, and heroes make him a true contender in the fight for the best Dota 2 Carry.

7. Ember Spirit

A hero that is favored in both mid and carry role, Ember Spirit’s snowball mechanics are so good that no team wants to let go it to others. Ember Spirit is a greatly contested hero in professional matches who will either be picked or get banned in the drafting stage. Almost every team is good with Ember Spirit on their side and therefore the hero is expected to be heavily contested in the future as well.

8. Alchemist

Ever since the update, Alchemist has been revived from the dead. The new build on Alchemist is working wonders in the professional scene and the hero is getting contested more than ever. VG’s Super is trying to get his hands on the hero whenever possible. Alchemist is definitely going to be one of those heroes you will be seeing at The International 2018.

9. Shadow Fiend

Shadow Fiend is among those heroes that have great potential to come back from gold deficit really really fast. Even if Shadow Fiend does not have a good lane stage with a little bit of support and creep stacks Shadow Fiend can be up and running in no time. Being able to take both mid and carry positions the hero has become a necessity in the current Meta. Heracles dota 2

10. Faceless Void

Faceless Void has been one of the most consistent picks in Dota 2. However, this agility based character receiving some serious nerfs in the past, the pro scene Meta kicked him out. Well, with patch 7.19, things are looking good for Faceless as more and more players are looking to add him into their drafts. it is because of this newfound love, we thing Faceless Void is going to wreck havoc in the upcoming The International 2018 tournament.

That is it for now, but stay tuned as we going to be bringing you more guides likes this in the coming days. So while you wait for that too happen, comment below and let us know what you think of the guide above. Do you agree with our Top 10 best Dota 2 Carry Heroes guide or do you think we missed out someone very guide?

Guide to Remove High Ping Spikes from Dota 2

Update : With the focus of keeping the article up to date with the latest issues, we have added a few new points that will help you solve Dota 2 high ping spikes in a better manner.

High ping spikes in Dota 2 are a pain in the butt if you are one of the unlucky gamers facing the trouble. There can be many reasons behind its cause and therefore proper scrutiny of each one of them is important if you are willing and eager to solve it ASAP. So today, we at Kill Ping would be bringing you a step by step go through on how you can solve your Dota 2 ping spikes for good.

Dota 2 Ping Spikes Fix

Disk Defragmentation

While many tell you to perform this operation for better computer performance, they don’t however; enlighten you on how it actually works. Consider the game takes over 30 boxes of space in the hard drive. The way it is installed, your computer puts all the boxes randomly in your hard drive.

With the passage of time, your hard drive is filled with more files/ games/ software whatever there is on your computer. However, with Disk Defragmentation, all the 30 boxes of Dota 2 will be compiled at a particular location making it easy for the computer to perform tasks related to the game. This while does not directly relate to solving ping spikes, however, will help Dota 2 to work run much smoother.

We do believe you are not new to this and will probably know how to perform the task, however, in case you don’t follow the simple steps below;

  1. Open My Computer
  2. Right click on the Drive where Dota 2 is available
  3. Open Properties
  4. Click on the Tools tab and select Defragment Now
  5. Select the Drive and Click the appropriate button

Please note that depending on the size of the drive the process may take 2 to 5 hours to complete. So better if you do this when you go to sleep or have some good options on how you would be spending the next couple of hours.

Deleting Crash Dump Files

Dota 2 Crashes a lot, and ping spikes can be a reason. However, we are not talking about game crashes over here, hopefully, will do in another guide. But, there is something you can do to clean up some space and make room for Dota 2 to run more efficiently. Every time the game crashes, it creates a dump file in the Dota 2 folder. Each file can be more than 40MB in space and can take up a lot of your hard drive. Delete all of the files named having “.mdmp” extension in the following location;

People generally install their games in the default C Drive. We do not advise you to that and in turn, recommend you to install all of your games on drives other than C Drive and leave it only for Windows.

Dealing With Antivirus

Antivirus though are good and help secure your computer from threats and attacks, are, however, also a problem for online gamers. This is because Antivirus keeps on running no matter what you are doing. Even when playing Dota 2 you would have to bear with your Antivirus running in the background. To make sure this does not cause ping spikes in Dota 2, turn of/ disable your Antivirus while playing.

In case you think it’s too risky for you, we recommend you to install Antivirus that has a gaming mode feature. This allows the antivirus to run on the lowest settings making an almost negligible effect on your computer’s performance. The best option we can recommend you is Avast Antivirus.

Graphic Settings

Not everyone has a GTX 980 installed on their computer. If you are one of those money bags then this step is not for you. However, if you are among the thousands of Dota 2 players that play the game on a medium end PC then setting the optimal video settings is a must. The general rule of thumb in this aspect is to always prioritize game performance over game graphics.

Firstly you must use the most appropriate resolution for the game. Dota 2 ping spikes in many cases can be due to your resolution being too high for your computer to handle. Below is a picture for you to set the resolution and rendering of Dota 2. Note that Rendering is set to Fastest which means the removal of all the visuals that do not have an impact on the game.

You can also see that each bar automatically ticks the options shown below. Set the bar according to what you think your computer can handle.

For further details on how you can avo >our lag fix guide for more details and workarounds.

Kill Ping: The Last Resort

The points above were based over issues on the user end, if done right will help you in reducing Dota 2 ping spikes. However, if you have done all the things mentioned above and still having solved the problem then the problem is most probably on the network side. Below is an example of what Ping Spikes actually look like.

As evident from the picture, the sudden rise of response time is what results in ping spikes in Dota 2. This generally happens if there is too much load over the ISP or the route game data is taking towards the game server. Luckily in this regards, Kill Ping can greatly reduce Dota 2 ping spikes and enhance your overall game experience. The way Kill Ping works is a bit difficult to summarize, however, simplifying the mechanism, Kill Ping reroutes the game data through its own dedicated channel from its strategically place servers around the globe.

This way, the game data that generally faces congestion through a normal route is redirected from a much clear and open path. Furthermore, the number of hops that game data takes from a computer to the game server is also reduced. This happens because Kill Ping forces it to take the path that creates the least distance.

Final Words

So in case you are done with trying out all the steps described above and still are having Dota 2 ping spikes than we strongly recommend you to try Kill Ping. Almost all of Kill Ping users who faced Dota 2 ping spikes in the past are now free from the misery and experience a smooth game they could only dream of. Try it out for yourself and see the difference.

Feel free to comment below and let us know what you think of our Dota 2 ping guide. If you are still coming across ping or lag related issues in Dota 2, then let us know the details down below, we will do our best to bring you a personalized fix soon.
