Dota 2 Turbo mode is the best thing Valve has added to the game in years

A fun knockabout for veterans, and a decent intro experience for new players.

Turbo mode was one of the headline announcements when Dota 2’s Dueling Fates update hit. It’s a version of the main 5v5 mode where everyone picks the hero they feel like playing (no bans or particular pick order or anything) but it’s a lot shorter. It’s also the best thing Valve have added to the game in years.

I think Turbo mode got a bit lost in the excitement about two new heroes—one new character is such a rare occurrence in Dota so two is like early Christmas. Plus the patch notes themselves were more than 11,000 words long, each sentence detailing a new change. With the sheer volume and complexity of stuff to parse—nap time for neutral monsters, free mangoes for particular heroes—I feel like Turbo mode ended up not exactly overlooked but, as one of the changes which was actually easy to understand, you could give it a nod and move on.

The way it achieves brevity is as follows: each hero earns gold and experience faster so they can buy items faster and level up faster; defensive towers are weaker so it’s not as hard to knock them down; respawn times are reduced meaning you spend less time definitely not grumpily tabbing out while dead; and you can buy anything from anywhere instead of summoning a long-suffering donkey or dithering in a side shop.

All of this leads to a quicker, lower-stakes style of match which is more forgiving to newcomers and rusty returnees alike. I think it might actually end up being my main mode in the same way that ARAM (all random, all mid) is in League of Legends.

I think the best thing here is that pretty much everything about the game is set up to lower toxicity. The matches are shorter so if you botch things up the experience will be over soon. I usually take forever to try out a new champion or step outside my comfort zone because the idea of potentially wasting an hour is a significant obstacle. It also carries the threat of other people being furious about you wasting their time.

Defensive tower changes also mean that you don’t get stuck trying to end a game. The respawn timer tweaks mean there’s less downtime and thus fewer opportunities to get bored, or to be significantly absent from fights in a way that your team can feel let down by a careless death.

That doesn’t mean stakes have vanished entirely. In one match I played, an Anti-Mage who had been doing sterling work needed to leave. Three of the remaining four of us were pretty chill about it and one person was hell-bent on reporting them for the abandon. I mean, I get that it’s frustrating to have wasted time and we probably lost the game based on that sudden absence. But it was nice that most people on the team were typing variants of “it’s fine—it’s only Turbo mode” into chat instead of having a big old barney.

Dota 2 has had various forms of practice mode for a while. There’s a sort of singleplayer tutorial thing where a parrot teaches a dwarf with a gun some basic principles; there are a bunch of custom game modes which let you get practice last-hitting creeps and things like that; there’s a third-party thing which lets you practice the typed combos which produce the ten Invoker spells; there’s a demo hero mode which lets you set your hero level, toggle invulnerability, experiment with builds and so on in an isolated mid lane scenario. None of those feel sufficiently like a real game to help ease you into playing “real” Dota matches.

Turbo mode tends to head to clown town after about 10 minutes — for me it’s the point at which I’ve earned more gold than I would ever normally do, bought all my support items and am eyeing up a casual Mjollnir—but before it does you still get a bit of the laning experience. You still do some warding or some ambushing. You still need to figure out pathways around the jungle, or guard against being jumped by a suddenly invisible enemy team. You still need to actually get to grips with your character’s abilities. It’s just that you’re a kazillion times less likely to get abuse for not knowing that stuff perfectly.

With destination clown town in mind it’s not really a place where you’ll learn late game strategies or how to break into a foe’s base (although a couple of the changes in 7.07 might help with the latter anyway). But it’s far more of a helpful playground for a Dota experience than the previous options, and far more likely to be populated given it’s an official game mode rather than something hidden within custom games.

I stopped playing Dota 2 a fair while ago because I’d ossified into a specific type of support role and the game didn’t really support breaking out of that in a fun way. Since 7.07 I’ve actually been playing and—perhaps more surprising given previous attempts to return—genuinely having fun.

Morphling/Old Abilities

  • This ability was replaced by Adaptive Strike (Agility) and Adaptive Strike (Strength) in the 7.07 gameplay patch.
  • The projectile travels at a speed of 1150.
  • The multiplier and stun values are not fixed. They adapt linearly in smooth intervals depending on the difference between Morphling’s agility and strength.
  • The values change with each percent difference between agility and strength, even when it is just a minimal change.
  • The multiplier and stun values also count bonus attributes, not only base attributes.
  • When the current agility is 50% higher than the strength, the damage multiplier stops increasing and the stun duration stops decreasing.

    • However, any illusion under allied or enemy control can be targeted, including illusions of Morphling under their control.
  • When the illusion is created, this ability is temporarily replaced by Morph Replicate (pre 7.07) until the illusion disappears.
  • Both, the illusion and Morphling have a timer above them, showing how many seconds are left for the illusion to expire. This timer is only visible to Morphling.
  • When replicating an ally, the illusion carries the ally’s name, instead of Morphling’s, so enemies cannot tell if it is just a replicate, or the real hero.
  • The illusion spawns 108 range away from the target if the hero has a collision size of 24, and 72 if the collision size is 8. It appears either north, east, south or west from the target.
  • Faceless Void replicates are able to walk ins >Chronosphere . A replicate created from an allied Faceless Vo >Rubick and his stolen Chronosphere.
  • Once purchased, Morphling cannot drop or sell his Aghanim’s Scepter .
  • This ability belonged to Replicate and was removed together with it in the 7.07 gameplay patch.
  • Replaces Replicate until the illusion expires or this ability is cast.
  • Despite being a sub-spell, Morph Replicate does proc all on-cast effects like a regular spell.

Yet another episode of Dota 2 heroes by Kill Ping gives you insight for some of the best support heroes in the current META. Previously after covering the most neglected heroes in Dota 2 now we are covering the most picked supports that are seen very commonly in competitive matches. This in any sense does not mean that they are only limited to the current META. The heroes selected are only chosen based over their versatility and in game effectiveness that they provide to the team and carry. This means that even with patch updates the heroes would still have a great impact over a game regardless of any changes unless a particular Dota 2 hero gets completely nerfed.

Chen

Chen is a jungling support who is one of the heroes who does not heavily rely over items to create emphasis in game. His potential can be seen from the very start of the game when Chen converts a neutral creep and goes first blood over the enemy who’s unaware of Chen’s capabilities.

Overall Chen is a very good support hero that can heal the entire team in difficult situations and if you go for Mekansm as Chen you will have your teammates at full HP in no time. Chen at the same time can be a good initiator with his converted creeps. Chen’s versatility comes from his abilities in which he also provides a decent amount of damage to the enemy with Test of Faith and gives damage amplification through Penitence. However, Chen needs times to master as controlling Chen and his max 4 converted creeps along with their powers is somewhat difficult. Even so, Chen is one of the most picked support heroes even with patch updates and changes. A hero that keeps everyone happy with his abilities Chen is a must play hero and is recommended to be mastered by all support heroes.

Dazzle

Another support Dota 2 hero that is good in lane pushing, healing, damage amplification and literally calling a hero back from the grave. With Shallow grave effect over a dying carry you can turn tides of the match with him having 5 more seconds of physical, magical invulnerability. Dazzle provides both passive and aggressive support game play and allows the carry of the team to be a more ease when farming. Dazzle with his abilities just does not allow a teammate to die. He is an easy to master hero with just timing a main factor when casting shallow grave. Dazzle’s ultimate can create huge impact in team fights being used both in aggressive and defensive manners.

Overall a very versatile hero that does not rely heavily over items, Dazzle is in the list of top support heroes that helps greatly in team fights and supporting the carry.

Disruptor

Heavy spamming abilities make disruptor and tough job for the opponent to handle. His ultimate provides him with an AOE silence and burst damage that is effective when the enemy heroes have crucial spells. Imagine a team fight broke at the mid lane and the enemy team’s tide is just ready to ravage the crap out of your team, suddenly you/ Disruptor come out of nowhere and cast your ultimate in the middle of the fight. Result? The enemy team with their crucial heroes stuck in your ultimate and kinetic field combo doing next to nothing being silenced and taking huge damage with 0.25 sec intervals.

Disruptor’s Glimpse can be a game changer if used at the correct moment by targeting on a flanking carry or a hero who bought back and teleported to be in a fight. This spell is all about timing and if you cast it at the right time you may even be the man of the match

Earthshaker

Earth Shaker is one of those Dota 2 heroes that have huge impact over the game even at level one. Proper positioning of earth shaker allows him to get early kills with the help of spamming abilities or just right click damage of another hero. With earth shaker on the side the enemy mid hero has constant pressure of ganking and has to position himself in such a manner that he is away safe from potential ganks. With a proper positioned fissure ES can just disjoint the enemy hero from his lane making him unable to fall and face ultimate death. Support players can utilizing the roaming abilities of ES to position themselves for ganks and have fissure at the right moment can seal a kill easily for the team.

ES is also a good pick since he is able to provide chain stuns with constant spamming of his abilities and is not item dependant except for just a Blink Dagger to have good initiation and damage through his ultimate. Overall mana pool is low and since fissure is mostly a spamming ability so support players may opt for a soul ring or arcane boots depending on the situation.

Lion

Lion is literally a pain in the ass. Being able to harass enemy teams from the start Lion is a Dota 2 hero that can be a baby sitter for the team carry and at the same time harass the hell out of a lane. Lion also being an item independent hero has good disables and heavy burst damage. His spell Mana Drain is at many times neglected by players but it’s not a spell that has to be neglected.

Mana drain can dehydrate core enemy players that don’t have much mana pool making them ineffective in team fights and also providing lion with extra mana that he needs to spam his abilities and his high mana cost ultimate.

Lion can create nuisance in almost any lane and his abilities allow him to be a roaming support which can duo with another support and create deadly roaming combinations in almost any lane they tend to. Being item independent Lion in many ways have great impact on the overall game and at times can solely burst down enemy heroes with proper timing.

Behind esports’ newest Hall of Fame inductee: Armada

Adam “Armada” Lindgren just became the first Super Smash Bros. player to win the Esports Hall of Fame Community Awards. Armada earned over $300,000 in prize money during his career and ranked first on the annual SSBMRank in both 2015 and 2016.

The Swedish player’s dominant career led to the Super Smash Bros Melee (SSBM) community affectionately naming him one of the “Five Gods of Smash”.

Breakout season

Armada began his career competing locally in the early 2000s maining Peach. His first major waves came when he finished fourth at his first national tournament, The Renaissance of Smash 4. He defeated top-ranked player Faab in the losers’ quarters match. In the following match Armada came close to knocking out Amsah, the best European player at the time, though ultimately losing the series.

After spending the next six months training, Armada pops up at Epita Smash Arena 2 (ESA2). His gameplay looked more well rounded, especially his edge-guards and punishes. Making a bigger run than his last national, Armada crushed through the losers’ quarters and semis to reach the lower bracket final against veteran player Captain Jack. The difference in experience showed as Armada struggled to keep up with Captain Jack, ending his run in place.

Road to the top

In 2009 Armada entered into another national tournament, SMASH ATTACK, where he was knocked into the lower bracket again. This time however, he wins his way back to the grand finals. Armada confidently 8-0’d Zgetto to take his first national tournament win. Following SMASH ATTACK, Armada competed in Epita Smash Arena 3. During the tournament he didn’t drop a single set, dethroning Amsah in the grand finals with a stunning 4-0.

Winning ESA3 established Armada as the best in Europe. GENESIS, a tournament based in the United States, sported world-class competition Mew2King and Mango. Armada exceeded all expectations during his run. Going nearly undefeated in the tournament, he beat both Mew2King and Mango in back to back matches. Despite having the upper seed, Armada lost twice to Mango in the grand finals.

Complete dominance

Armada placed highly in his next US tournaments, Pound 4, Apex 2010, and Pound 5, but never won. The losses made him realize that his main—Peach—was too weak against Jigglypuff for skill to overcome. Armada solved the unfavorable matchup with a surprising Young Link pick, using range to out-camp Jigglypuff. When GENESIS 2 rolled around, Armada finally took first in a US tournament, defeating Mango in the Grand Finals.

From 2011-2012 Armada placed first in every single Melee tournament he competed in. He won several US nationals and every EU national, including B. E.A. S.T II where he didn’t lose a set. In addition to winning singles in Apex 2012, he paired up with Mew2King to win doubles as well. After defending his title at Apex 2013 Armada announced his retirement.

The return

Only a year later Armada decided to break retirement and entered B. E.A. S.T 4. His rust showed, but only slightly as he placed second behind Leffen. His return saw various playstyle changes as well, most notably his abandonment of Young Link in favor of Fox. Looking to sidearm his Peach with something stronger, he stated that Fox would prove more useful against Jigglypuff, in addition to giving him an equal footing in the mirror matchup.

Armed with a confident new weapon, Armada won various tournaments across Europe. After qualifying for MLG Anaheim 2014 he returned to the United States to make his first international debut since his return.

Despite playing well the whole tournament, Armada lost to Mango in the Grand Finals. He got his revenge at CEO 2014 knocking Mango out to take first. Following his win, he signed to Alliance as their first-ever Smash player.

A year later EVO 2015 hosted one of the largest melee tournaments in the world. Here Armada defeated famous Jigglypuff player and contender for the best in the world: HungryBox. Armada ended 2015 as the No. 1 ranked player. The Swedish player would then go on to win GENESIS 4, B. E.A. S.T 7, Smash Summit Spring 2017 and EVO 2017.

Retirement

Coming into 2018 Armada suffered an unfortunate series of losses in Valhalla, GENESIS 5 and Smash Summit 6. Statements from the player made it clear he lacked the drive he once had and that he was no longer having fun competing. On Sept. 18, 2018, Armada announced his retirement. The incredible tournament runs and pristine winning records mark Adam “Armada” Lindgren as one of the best to ever touch Smash—and one of the greatest esports athletes of all time.

There has been a fair amount of work done in the SFM recently that just shipped in this morning’s Dota update, so I figured it was worth pointing out the new/changed functionality:

Material override – available under the Utilities submenu of the context menu in the Animation Set Editor:

  • Add Material Override To Models – adds a material override element that you can edit in the Properties Editor for fine-grained material replacement, via these attributes:
    • replacementMaterial – replaces all the materials of the model
    • materials – initially contains the array of materials on the model, but changing an array item causes just that material to be replaced
    • (anything else) – material parameters that will be passed to the shader (D_COLOR_WARP, $COLORWARP, $RIMLIGHTSCALE, etc)
  • Replace Materials On Models – allows you to pick a single material that will replace all the materials of all the models of the selected animationsets
  • Remove Material Override From Models – removes material overrides from selected animationsets

Transform Lock icon in the Animation Set Editor now has a tooltip telling you what the control is locked to (“5 controls locked to world and controls in axe1”, or “Locked to axe1 – spine2”, for example)

Added Cloth Stiffness Control To Models. (0 is the current/default, and 1 is to just follow animation) Available under the Utilities submenu of the context menu in the Animation Set Editor

Now recording and rendering various status effects in Dota (Phantom Lancer’s gold material override for the local player, for example)

Now recording and rendering healthbars in Dota (if Interface is checked in record UI)

Copy/Paste animation sets no longer warns (or unlocks & relocks) when copying animation sets that have locks to other selected animation sets (still warns of lock parent isn’t selected)

depthSortBias attribute is now available by default on particles, texture planes, and lights, for changing their translucent sort order (making light volumetrics appear to render behind or in front of a given particle system, etc without actually moving them) The values are in inches, positive values are away from the camera, and it’s generally better to apply positive values to the thing you want to push behind, rather than apply negative values to pull the thing you want to pull in front, since you can’t pull anything closer than the camera

Auto-layoff is now working in Source2 SFM:

  • -sfm_loadsession // loads session, skipping the start wizard
  • -sfm_moviesettings // imports movie settings
  • -sfm_rendersettings // imports render settings
  • -sfm_autolayoff // renders to the output filename on startup

If – sfm_autolayoff is on the commandline, then the following commandline options will be checked:

  • -sfm_layoffshotlist // example: shot1,shot2,shot9,shot17 = 4 shots
  • -sfm_layoffshotrange // example: shot1,shot17 = 17 shots
  • -sfm_layoffframerange // example: 101,113 = 13 frames

The biggest Dota 2 event ever held in South East Asia will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March 2015. All our qualified teams will get an all-expenses paid trip to take part in what will be a new chapter in the South East Asian professional gaming scene and a shot at the $100,000 prize pool.
