Shadow Fiend Gu >

  • Shadow Fiend mendapat 2 bonus attack damage per soul.

Presence Of The Dark Lord (F)

General DiscussionAny Invoker tips.

I’m kind of new to invoker, so does any one have any tips on how to play this funny looking wizard? I have a couple questions regarding the hero. Is midas a MUST in every game? (If not, which types of game do I not get it?) Is refresher a “requirement” in every single game? And lastly, is getting lv.3 necro a stupid idea?
EDIT: How do I play against heroes like doom, silencer, disruptor, etc… ?

1. Midas is not a MUST ever, but it is definitely an AMAZING item on Invoker because of the godly experience advantage it gives you (always use it on big creeps). Get it when you can get it early enough (if it takes you more than 11 minutes, it’s way too late to get one, your goal is under 6 minutes but it’s not too bad until 10). Make sure you buy the whole thing in one shot because if you buy the glove of haste and then can’t get the recipe, you just wasted 500g. Same vice versa. Dota 2 yaj togloh ve

2. Refresher is for people who have memorized his skills so well that they can go through his whole combo twice with the refresher. Not recommended for new Invokers.

3. Yes, there are 10x better items you can get on Invoker.

4. Position yourself in a way that their ultis won’t be an issue for you, get BKB for Silencer and Disruptor and get Linken’s for Doom.

seperate control groups for minions

Midas is nice on Invoker, but the indirect nerf in 6.79 makes it less appealing. Midas can quickly boost Invoker’s level in early-mid game so he can start dominating in late game. However, midas makes him and his team more vulnerable. As long as you don’t get punished heavily for going midas, then do it around 6th minute. 99.9% invoker should not get refresher orb. Necronomicon 3 is good for invoker with 4-1-4 skill build. Do not build it every game. It works great against windwalkers and strong dps heroes like Ursa, Troll, TA, etc.

I ussualy go phase first then midas (8-10min midas) , the most common scenario if you pick invoker , someone will pick pudge.
In that case id recommend going q w build , it is hard to last hit untill you have phase , as my start items in this scenario i get tango , boots , clarity, by skilling first w you will have +-330 move speed which will give you more survive ability.
Yet i do not stay in q w build for to long at once i have 3q 3w 2ult i put everything in exort.
But there are amazingly lots of build for invoker.
I have played alot of games even without aganims , i do not know why but i very commonly get linkens, this because you can save team mates with it and survive when needed urself.
Refresher is only purhased in very few games , where i pubstump so hard that i can just do my combos and kill like 3 ppl at once.
And about silencer , doom , disrupt , linkens really helps against most played heroes
but for heroes like disruptor and silencer a fast bkb is a best choise

i think exhort stomps pudge pretty bad, no need to go QW. Most pudge players are stupid, just keep harassing him with your superior damage when he comes in for creep kills and when he over extends you can cold snap him with minion and do even more damage. Then just go and deny his rune (guess one way and minion to other) and its a pretty easy lane. As you are a range hero if you know how to mid properly you can almost always hold the lane towards your cliff so even a hook would never kill you at lower levels. If the creep wave is at his cliff you can just send your minion up there to scout so you dont get hooked.

TLDR learn to use your minions well.

@Urgromim
Thanks for the guide. I’ve read it many times and have seen all of your “raging fury” videos. You’re the reason I started playing invoker!

When i play pudge against an exort invoker , i can easly kill him at lvl 1

^
Against pudge, start with quas, snap asap, then forge spirit asap. Exort invoker should harass minimally at level one in most scenarios. One small gank and you are dead. Even without a gank, you can’t kill the last creep (near pudge’s tower) if pudge’s wave is moving forward. 280 ms on invoker is so ridiculous.

How does a invoker die to a pudge at lvl 1 ? you can always be on your own cliff if you know how to mid properly against a melee hero. Just hit him to agro creeps and manipulate the wave. Unless you pick up a haste rune as the first or second rune i cant imagine dying to a pudge at earlier levels. Only situation is if im looking out for a sunstrike in another lane and get hooked while im not paying attention and also have my invoke on CD due to sunstrike.

Make sure to pick up your boots kind of early too – i tend to go for tranquil boots on 99% of my games (personal preference). Invoker is just so slow that tranquil boots gives more movespeed even when broken than all the other boots.

pudge is pretty easy mu for invo idk what u all talking about. u can even start with boots if u want u dominate him anywa

@DesideRium
never go tranquil boots on Invoker. 475 gold for 15 MS and 4 armor is a horrible investment. Tranquil is only for roamers.

Please don’t start by memorizing and practice any combos. Make sure you spend time getting to know each spell, especially how they work, and when they work best. Then you can practice invoking the most relevant spell according to current situation. Master one spell at a time, even though you won’t unleash Invoker’s full potential during that time. When you have almost done that, any 2 spells you cast together in game will be a quite effective combo. Then you can start practicing complex combos like tornado + meteor + deafening blast or tornado + EMP + meteor + deafening blast (with Aghanim’s Scepter).

The simplest combo for new invoker players is forge spirit + cold snap. I recommend you follow @Urgromim ‘s 414 build. It can get you started quickly with least knowledge of Invoker’s other spellls.

Invoker is relatively universally suited hero, but it’s very hard to play Invoker against heavy ganking lineups , since Invoker need to dominate at least one lane to get level advantage in order to make impact, beware of that before you pick him.

The last tip I wanna mention is that though Invoker has the highest damage dealing combos in the game, a BKB will make all your magic spells irrelevant. Luckily enough because of wex and exort orbs and Alacrity, Invoker has decent late game physical damage dealing ability. Make sure you prepare to change your tactics and item builds into physical right-clicker when you see multiple BKBs on your opponents.

While Jolie was the captain of the team he mentioned that vigoss was often the mastermind behind their strategies.

Due to his aggressive play style he was often called the “King of Gankers” [3] , a title he sometimes has to share with Ars-Art.

Dota 2 critical strike stacking stones

Dota 2 critical strike stacking stones

Dota 2 critical strike stacking stones

Critical strike

is a passive ability that gives a chance to deal bonus damage on a successful attack.

Contents

Mechanics [ edit ]

A Critical Strike’s occurence is determined upon beginning an attack, and not upon attack launch or attack landing. This means when, for example, having a Crystalys and starting an attack, but then upgrading the Crystalys into a Daedalus , the attack still applies the Crystalys crit, since it was determined upon attack begin. Or when attacking an enemy affected by Soul Rend , and the debuff expires during an already started attack’s animation, that attack still applies the crit, since it started while the debuff was still there.

Multiplier [ edit ]

An attack which triggers Critical Strike has its total damage value multiplied by the given multiplier of the source of the Critical Strike. This means a critical strike is basically an attack damage amplifier, as it does not add extra damage on top of the attack damage, but directly increases the damage of the attack by multiplying it.

The multiplier is applied before any reductions or amplifications on the target or on the attacking unit. It only counts the unit’s main attack damage (base damage, plus damage gained from the primary attribute), plus any bonus damage (percentage and flat bonuses) it has, meaning any damage instance added to the attack damage which is separete from the attack damage itself is not considered by critical strikes. If an ability adds its damage directly to the attack damage, then it may be considered by Critical Strike, though there are exceptions to this. See Final Attack Damage for the complete calculation.

All chance-based sources of Critical Strike use pseudo-random distribution.

Visual feedback [ edit ]

When a Critical Strike occurs, a red-colored number pops up on the victim of the strike, with a lightning bolt icon on the right side of the number. This number shows the multiplied damage value before any reductions or amplifications. This means the displayed value does not equal the damage the target actually took from the attack.

Stacking [ edit ]

When having multiple sources of Critical Strike, and both trigger on the same attack, the Critical Strike with the higher multiplier takes priority, while the lower one does nothing. This means their proc chances stack, working independently from each other, but their effects do not stack, resulting in a diminishing behavior.

Attack modifier interactions [ edit ]

Critical Strike is an attack modifier which fully stacks with any other modifier. However, it does not interfere with any attack modifier. If an attack modifier increases or reduces attack damage, it is counted by the critical damage multiplier. Abilities which grant conditional attack damage bonuses may or may not be by the multiplier.

  • Lifesteal: Lifesteal is calculated after critical strikes, which means that it increases the amount of life you steal.
  • Cleave: Cleave is calculated after critical strikes, which means it deals increased damage to all units within the cleave radius.

Conditional attack damage bonuses which are counted by critical strike are:

3. Item build and game progression
4. Creeping / Jungling

Role changes

The changes in 6.82 made Bloodseeker less of a carry and more into a teamfighter like Enigma . Laning him in jungle is most effective IMHO since new Bloodrage became such a double edged skill.

That means, getting the timing when to go online right is even more important now. As soon as you hit level 6, you should gank all lanes whenever your Rupture is available.

Skill Build

Bloodrage : Increases all damage recieved and dealt, no matter what kind of damage. That includes spells, items, autoattacks. Heals for a percentage of max HP of anything the unit with Bloodrage kills but also heals anyone who kills the buffed unit.

How to use it:

  • Jungling – Increases your jungle speed by boosting damage, heals you by killing jungle camps.
  • Ganking – Increases damage on target of Rupture -> quick pickoff.
  • Buffing glasscannons – Heros who can deal damage from afar can use the buff very well without much risk. Examples: Zeus , Sniper , Silencer (Can buff after Last Word was cast)

Blood Rite : New spell with sick animation (best looking in game IMHO). Pure damage + Huge AOE silence but 3 second delay. => Combine with Rupture or a teammate’s disable.
Also great for zoning out enemies in teamfights.

Thirst : Truesight vision on all enemies below 30% hp. Free damage and movement speed for each HP your enemies are lacking. => 1 hero missing 10% HP = +3,5 damage and +4% movement speed at level 4.

Rupture : Forces enemies to stand still or suffer moderate (level 1) to severe (level 3) pure damage. This is your initiation skill. It is great to prevent enemies from blinking away, however Town Portal Scroll is a cheap escape. Therefor make sure to make use of Bloodrage , Blood Rite and your Urn of Shadows for enough damage when you use Rupture or have a teammate with a stun ready.

Max Thirst first – in the laning stage, there will always be some heros lacking some HP which boosts your damange and lets you jungle faster. The speed boost also lets you help out in nearby lanes on occasion.

I am still not sure about whether maxing Bloodrage or Blood Rite first. For now I found maxing Blood Rite first better because it gives more guarateed damage. Relying on Bloodrage for damage in ganks is risky. Feel free to comment on that.

Item build and game progression

Start without regen? NOOB!
In case of jungle Bloodseeker it really is not needed. Better to buy Observer Wards or Animal Courier to help out your (probably) solo support a bit.

First items you build are Boots of Speed and Urn of Shadows – ahh there’s your regen. Then turn the boots into Power Treads .

By the time you have Power Treads you should have reached level 6 and be ready to gank. With (hopefully) some kill bounty you build a Blade Mail . Why Blade Mail ? Because Bloodrage essentially doubles its effectiveness – think about it.

From there on it depens on the enemy lineup and the game progression about what to build next. Black King Bar vs lots of stuns, Crimson Guard if you team can use some damage block, Assault Cuirass if your team needs some bonus armor, Heart of Tarrasque vs heavy nukes, Abyssal Blade if you need a stun, Butterfly for evasion, Manta Style to dispell yourself, Diffusal Blade to dispell others, Monkey King Bar if the enemy has evasion, Scytche of Vyse Eye of Skadi if you don’t know what to buy anymore.

It is important to farm whenever your Rupture is on cooldown. Don’t sit in a lane, in enemy vision and next to one of your cores taking his gold/xp. Stay in jungle and off vision and pounce on the enemy every minute when Rupture is available. This will make them scared to go to lane and secure your team an early advantage.

After getting picked off by Bloodseeker ganks, at some point your enemy will try to 5 man push a tower. Thankfully, all new Blood Rite is a beast in teamfights. However, Bloodseeker is a lot less tanky compared to 6.81. Casting Bloodrage on yourself in a teamfight is often a bad idea and you no longer heal when enemy heros die next to you. This means you have to stay back at least at the beginning of the teamfight.

The Rupture + Blood Rite combo is also applicable in teamfights since it forces your enemies to either leave one of them behind, or get mass silenced.

Creeping / Jungling

To Jungle Bloodseeker , you use a technique called “choke point jungling”. That meas, cutting trees near camps and hiding there so only one creep can hit you at a time. I linked a video below.

The hardest point to jungling Bloodseeker is at level 1. Go to the runespot at 0:00 but try not to engage in a fight there. Once creeps spawned, check the medium camps. Worst case is 2x centaurs who are really hard to kill at level one. In that case you may check the big camps for trolls. If still unlucky, make sure to get a good choke point and kill the big centaur first. Dont use Bloodrage right away, use it when the centaur is below half HP.

Once you are level 2, just make sure you have Bloodrage on you whenever you kill a creep and you should be max HP all the time.

Hotkeys

The hotkeys settings can be accessed by clicking on the little gear icon in the most top left corner in the main menu. Here, the player can customize many hotkeys, or select one of the many pre-set hotkey templates. Almost every key on the keyboard can be bound to something, with a very few exceptions. The exceptions usually have a set purpose in the game and thus are un-rebindable.

Contents

Unbindable keys [ edit ]

Several hotkeys have a set purpose, which cannot be changed. This results in them mostly being un-rebindable.

  • The following keys are completely unbindable: ESC, SHIFT (left and right), CTRL (left and right), MOUSE 1, MOUSE 2
  • The ALT key can only bound together with other keys, as a combo key. The ALTGR key is treated as the same key.
    • Although the ALT modifier can be bound to another key, ALT is still unbindable. When the modifier gets rebound, ALT has no use.
  • The WINDOWS KEY (left and right) (or COMMAND KEY on Apple keyboards) are unbindable, but they can be turned bindable in the advanced hotkey settings. These keys keep their default function, which is opening the start menu on the desktop. This is true even when the keys get bound ingame.
  • The PRINT KEY is fully bindable, but it also keeps its default function, which is to take screenshots.
  • The following keys are bindable on their own, but cannot be combined with ALT: PRINT KEY, TAB
  • All other standard keys are bindable.

Basic hotkeys [ edit ]

Basic hotkeys are active while playing a match. The player can change the hotkeys at any time, even during a match. There are hotkeys for abilities, items, unit actions, shop actions, chat, interface and control groups. In the advanced hotkeys, there are additional settings for unit actions, shop actions, interface and control groups, and the hotkeys for camera actions, saved camera positions and some hotkey setting options.

Hotkey templates [ edit ]

By default, the game uses the “Arrow (Default)” hotkey layout. The player can choose from a variety of pre-set hotkey templates, which can be found by clicking on “Reset hotkeys. ” at the bottom left of the settings menu. Available templates are:

Template Description
Arrow (Default) Dota 2 default hotkeys.
WASD Dota 2 default hotkeys, adapted for using W, A, S and D for camera movement.
Legacy Keys Dota 1 style hotkeys; with different ability hotkeys for every hero and unit. 1
MMO Key bindings similar to various Massively Multiplayer Online games.
League of Legends Key bindings similar to League of Legends.
Heroes of Newerth Key bindings similar to Heroes of Newerth.
Smite Key bindings similar to Smite.

1 Legacy keys can also be enabled by ticking the corresponding option in the Advanced Hotkeys settings, rather than starting over with this template.

Activating a template unbinds all hotkeys used in it from their existing actions. Hotkeys can still be changed freely after selecting a template, except Legacy Keys’ item hotkeys.

Abilities [ edit ]

There are 6 ability slots which can be used. If one slot is empty and contains no ability, it is not visible in-game, and all abilities coming after it are moved together. For example, if a unit has an ability in slot 1 and 3, but no ability in slot 2, then the 2nd slot is not visible and the 3rd ability is moved next to the 1st ability, so that there is no gap. However, the slots are still bound according to the settings. Despite the 3rd slot being moved to remove the gap, its hotkey is still equal to whatever is set for the 3rd slot in the ability hotkey settings.

Heroes usually have 3 abilities in their first 3 slots, and their ultimate always in the 6 slot. This causes the ultimate spell to always use whatever hotkey is set for the 6th slot, despite the ultimate visually appearing in the 4th slot. This is why the hotkey of the 4th ability on non-hero units is not equal to the hotkey of ultimate abilities. The non-hero unit has 4 abilities in its 4 slots and has the 5th and 6th slot empty, so they are not displayed. If its 4th ability would be moved to the 6th slot, it would make visually no difference, but change its hotkey to what is set in the 6th slot.

By default, the ability hotkeys apply to every unit the player controls. It is possible though, to bind different hotkeys to heroes, couriers and other units by turning “Unit Specific Hotkeys” on. It is also possible to bind unique hotkeys for each hero, however, this is not possible for other units. Clicking on “Clear” after having given non-hero units, couriers or an individual hero unique settings, sets the hotkeys back to what the player set as default.

The player can choose between regular cast (select spell and then select target) and quickcast (select spell and automatically cast it where the cursor is). Autocast is by default ALT+ability hotkey. It is possible to choose between regular and quickcast for couriers, non-heroes and for each hero, just like how unique bindings are possible. If the player wishes to use regular and quickcast, or wants to use different autocast hotkeys, the “Enable Advanced Quickcast/Autocast Hotkeys” setting can be turned on, which allows setting different hotkeys for regular, quick – and autocast for each slot. This also works together with unit specific hotkeys. However, advanced quickcast/autocast hotkeys is not compatible with legacy hotkeys. Here, the player can only decide between regular and quickcast, and autocast is always ALT+hotkey.

What Is Dota 2 Stuttering and How to Fix It?

Ever since Valve introduced its highly anticipated 7.00 Update for Dota 2, players have been reporting issues linked to the infamous Dota 2 Stuttering. This issue was somewhat fixed with the previous updates, however, it has now made a return to the MOBA. More so, with the game now running update 7.08, reports suggest the Dota 2 fps stutter issue still persist in the game.

Gamers from across the globe have been reporting instances related to the infamous Dota 2 stutter issue. Consequently, Dota 2 players are on the brink of leaving the game forever, as, for them, it is currently unplayable. However, for all of you, who are affected by this issue, I have some good news for you.

@DOTA2 your dota 2 servers are taking a dump right now stutter / slow motion constantly nonstop ingame

my Dota 2 client have been stuttering in the last 2 weeks, despite low ping… no idea why

It seems there is a way to get rid of the Dota 2 fps stutter, one which is easier to apply and has positives effects. But before I delve into the details, let’s first get a firm grasp on what the stuttering issue is?

Dota 2 Fps Stutter

According to the reports, Dota 2 fps stutter is a sort of a lag spike which freezes the game for a second or so, after a specific period of time, or when things get intense. And since Dota 2 is a game where a single second can have the greatest of impacts, you can just understand how frustrating the stutter can get. For more visual understanding, check out the video below:

By looking at the video above, you can clearly see that playing under the effect of the Dota 2 stuttering issue, is quite difficult. As a result, a fix for this is much needed. However, the fix for this issue isn’t as simple as changing a couple of settings as it is linked to lag. This means there are a lot of things which can be responsible for the Dota 2 fps stutter.

Dota 2 Stuttering Lag Fix

The Dota 2 stutter issue is a product of the lag, the root cause behind this could be linked to factors such as the game’s system requirements and your gaming rig’s performance. However, since I have already covered that in the Kill Ping Dota 2 Lag articles, I would not want to double dip on this matter. So, before you scroll down, I will advise you to check out the Dota 2 lag guide .

  • Make sure all of the drivers on your computer are up-to-date, especially the ones for your GPU
  • Close down any background application which is either using up your internet or is using up a lot of your system’s space
  • Scan and defrag all of the drives, especially the ones where Dota 2 and Steam are located
  • Lower your graphics and v >Bid Farewell to Dota 2 Stuttering Once and For All

Kill Ping is a gaming VPN that features dedicated servers for almost every online game which allow players to play the game without any lag or delays. In other words, Kill Ping is the perfect fix for dealing with this issue.

Players from all over the world have tried out Kill Ping and have enjoyed smooth gaming experience like never before with increased FPS, reduced lag, and spikes. So, if you are the one who wishes to lay waste to Dota 2 stuttering once and for all, I would highly recommend you to give Kill Ping a try. It is one of the best options for online gamers. A comprehensive matchmaking system is an important factor in being able to enjoy playing Dota, regardless of which hero or role you prefer. Today’s update includes some engineering changes to the core matchmaking system to allow for bigger changes and better analytical capabilities. Over the next year, we’ll be spending more time focusing on various aspects of matchmaking such as intra-team balance, player conduct, new player experience, abusive behaviors, account buying, friend and teamplay aspects, high mmr matchmaking dynamics, and other issues in an effort to make the overall experience of playing Dota more fun for players of all levels. In this blog post we decided to drill deeper into the changes in today’s update and explain our thoughts.

Matchmaking involves various tradeoffs and our goal is to find the best balance between all the different factors. In order to help make progress on finding the right set of tradeoffs, today’s update includes a couple different experimental changes that will last until the end of the season. Close to the end of the season we’ll do a direct call for feedback on how the changes have worked out and use that feedback, along with data we are gathering in the meantime, to help inform the direction for the next season. We’ll also be working towards other features, such as better detection of smurfing and other abusive behaviors as the year progresses.

The first of these experiments is removing the concept of separate Solo and Party MMRs. We expect this to be the most controversial component in today’s update, as we’ve heard fair criticisms of it in the past. We can’t say that we are fully confident that this will end up being a good change either, so we’ll want to wait until the end of the season when we gather feedback and data on how it has played out after players have had a chance to absorb it. There are two major aspects with this change: 1) the teamplay and social aspect and 2) the value and correctness of the MMR value.

For the teamplay aspect: We think it is really crucial for you to not have a disincentive to play with your friends. The game currently overly emphasizes playing solo and establishes a strong social reward mechanism for this, which causes many players to prefer playing alone than with friends. We believe that bias has over time caused more negativity and unhappiness when playing Dota. Dota 2 official twitter logos Furthermore, Dota is a very teamplay heavy game and we want to consider that aspect a bit more strongly in the hierarchy of matchmaking values. We’ve considered other approaches to the friend and teamplay incentives, but they tended to do a poor job at making it feel actually rewarding to play with friends and only papered over the issue.

For the correctness of the MMR aspect: We recognize that there is a tradeoff here on the mmr data quality if the match has solo mmr numbers with party mmr numbers, however we feel that the impact of that data noise is much smaller than even we initially considered it to be early on and generally with how it is discussed online. Most of the issues related to this we think we can solve with better algorithms. Another common case is playing with a friend who has a higher mmr than you, expecting that it will cause your mmr to go higher. While that has been at least partly true in previous matchmaking system iterations, our most recent version does a fairly good job of addressing this. We have enough data to form matches that cause you to have an even chance to win by carefully choosing the opponents that have a similar makeup. At a base level, we think mathematically we are able to have high confidence that playing with a friend will not have a material effect on your average mmr value with a properly balanced matchmaker. We’ve done some testing to make sure this is true in advance of this update, however we know it’s likely there is more work to be done here and we’ll continue working on this aspect in the background during this experimental period.

Through our investigation into the topic of matchmaking volatility and how parties affect the game, we’ve noticed something that fans likely already know: players have very different comfort levels when playing core roles versus support roles. Some players perform really poorly when they play a role they are not used to, and in turn introduce a lot of volatility in the system for everyone by causing your MMR number to drift away from your actual skill level as well as causing imbalanced games.

So because of that, and because of our abiding love of having multiple MMR numbers, we are adding a new concept of Core and Support MMR numbers. In order to achieve this, we need to know what role you want to play in advance of the match being formed. So for this experimental update, we are moving the Ranked Roles feature to the base Ranked matchmaking and expanding on its capabilities. Now when you matchmake, you will have the option of selecting roles from position 1 through 5 (Safe Lane Core through Hard Support), including multiple selections. So if you like playing Mid or Offlane, you can select those two, or if you like playing Hard Support and Mid, you’ll be able to do that as well. You will be matched based on either your Core or Support MMR.

Each MMR type will also have its own leaderboard, and for the purposes of this short experimental period the existing rank will be applied as the initial rank for both Core and Support. If we end up keeping this feature in the future, there will be a separate calibration phase for each one.

These experimental changes will remain active for the rest of this season for you to try out. Sometime after The International concludes, we’ll issue a call for community feedback to help guide the next steps in our efforts to increase matchmaking quality for everyone. We hope to have your support and patience through this experiment as well as subsequent changes towards the path of making a better overall matchmaking system.

While we were initially going to release this change as part of the Summer Scrub update, the amount of significant underlying code changes required for this update introduces a lot of potential instability. So we are splitting the Summer Scrub update into two parts, this first part for a matchmaking rework, and the second part soon after for bug fixes and a few quality of life additions. We are expecting that we’ll have a lot of matchmaking related bugs to work through today, so please let us know if you run into any issues and make sure to include the matchid in your reports.

We know that queue times have increased across the board recently, and the most significant factor contributing to this has been the stricter requirements that Ranked Roles imposes on the formation of matches. Prior to the introduction of Ranked Roles, the matchmaker had a wider pool of people to draw upon because of the few restrictions. In the past, when one or more players desired the same role, this conflict was resolved during the game itself, often with unpleasant results. This conflict is now resolved at queue time, but a price of this is that the matchmaker is often starved for players in the least-queued roles. The matchmaker must wait for players in the desired roles to enter the queue, or form sub-optimal matches with the players currently in queue to satisfy all role requirements. Usually the role most in demand by the matchmaker is Hard Support, but this is not always the case, and historically this has varied based on time of day, skill bracket, region, etc.

To address role imbalance more generally, today’s update introduces Fast Queue for Ranked matchmaking. Players in the Fast Queue are given priority by the matchmaker, and will find matches much more quickly. In order to earn games for Fast Queue, you must elect to play with all roles selected. Playing with all roles selected will also automatically place you in Fast Queue for free.

When playing solo with all roles selected, you will earn four more games for future use in the Fast Queue. When grouped as a party, players can also earn Fast Queue games if the party fulfills all roles between its players. Two-player parties earn 2 games each, three-player parties earn 1 game each. You can earn and store up to 60 Fast Queue games.

For example, if you are in a party of two where one player marks the three Core roles and the other marks the two Support roles, they will enter the Fast Queue for free, and will each be awarded two additional Fast Queue games. Parties of 5 will always enter the Fast Queue for free, but do not earn Fast Queue games. We’ve added new UI to make it easy to see to understand when you or your party is eligible for Fast Queue.

Our data clearly showed that players choosing roles without any additional constraints simply doesn’t result in enough role diversity for the matchmaking population to be healthy, negatively affecting both queue times and match quality. The motivation of the Fast Queue is to solve the “roll for mid” problem in a structured way that prevents in-game conflicts, while also providing enough role diversity to enable reasonable queue times.

Going forward, our immediate focus will be validating that Fast Queue is doing enough to improve health of the matchmaking pool, and tweaking as necessary. We’ll also be rolling out a small incremental update to the behavior and report system in the coming weeks. As always, please continue to give us feedback. We appreciate your patience thus far as we iterate on matchmaking.

DOTA 2 tips and tricks: A beginner’s gu > Max Downton | August 28, 2015 1:32 pm BST

10 tips for anyone starting out with DOTA 2

DOTA 2 can be an extremely daunting game for new people to get into. They see an enormous hero pool, hundreds of items and hear about a toxic community and are immediately put off.

“It’s too much to learn,” cried one of our friends, “What if I’m bad?” shouted another. We’ve had enough of questions like that so we’ve constructed a simple list of our top 10 tips for new players to DOTA 2.

1. Learn to listen

Not everyone in DOTA 2 is out to hurt you. These are just people who have invested a lot of time in the game and get frustrated when they lose. It could happen to anyone after all.

When you jump into your first online game be willing to learn; ask your team mates for advice, listen to their suggestions and you’ll slowly start to pick up the basics of engaging against another team of people online.

2. Pick an easy hero

There are over 100 heroes in DOTA 2 and not all of them are beginner friendly. You might think Invoker’s strange sexy hair makes him your perfect hero, but he isn’t. You might think Visage and his flying ghouls look like something out of your favourite book, but they aren’t. There are some heroes in DOTA 2 with an insanely high skill cap; allowing the best players to really showcase what they can do in competitive games.

Avoid these heroes like the plague; you’ll get frustrated, shout a lot and your parents will wonder what has happened to the polite child they raised.

A good starting hero would be something like Lich; he has a high movement speed, some great abilities to help your teammates and some high damage skills so you’re never out of the action.

3. The Fog is your friend

When you jump into a match on DOTA 2 you’ll notice a whole load of fog of war over the map. It obscures the whole other side of the map, much of the middle and even a large portion of your side.

In this fog you are invisible to the enemy team. You need to know where your opponents can see you and try your hardest to avoid it. Conversely you can find ways to reveal the fog of war on your enemy’s side, allowing you and your team to quickly kill of enemies who least expect it. Learn the fog.

4. Eat the tangos so you can stay in lane

At its core DOTA 2 is an extremely simple game. You kill things to amass gold and experience and, when you feel ready, smash down your enemy’s buildings until their big one in the base explodes.

Obviously during that process you’ll find a lot of random elements, but every game boils down to that. You need to maximise that gold and experience gain for yourself.

You can’t do this by running back to base whenever you take damage; buy yourself some tangos when you spawn and use them to eat trees to regenerate some health so you can stay in lane.

5. Develop thick skin

We won’t lie to you; people will say horrible things to you in DOTA 2. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing well, playing badly or playing the best game of DOTA 2 that anyone has ever seen. People will insult you in broken English, in languages you’ve never heard and even in perfect English as they insinuate things about your sexuality, personality and anything else that they can think of. It’s pretty trying at times; so don’t be afraid to mute and report people you find insulting or aggressive.

Don’t let them get you down though; keep doing your best and getting better.

6. Buy Wards

We talked a little bit before about how the map is covered in fog. Well, victory in games of DOTA 2 rely on being able to see and predict enemy movements. If you are in a space on the map where you are surrounded by fog you have very little idea of what, if anything, is coming for you.

You can, however, buy items called ‘Wards’ which provide vision in a fairly large radius around where you stick them down.

Learn where to place these in crucial locations and help your team to victory.

7. Don’t always play supports

There are certain categories that heroes fall into, far too many to list here, but they tend to be determined by how much gold they need to be effective.

As you gather gold you can buy items which make you more powerful; supports tend to be the heroes that require the least amount of gold to be useful in fights. This makes people think they are perfect for beginners; not always.

Some can be extremely difficult to play and, when you do require hold, many simply don’t have the tools to get it quickly.

Talk to your team and ask them what they think would suite your playing style.

8. Kill Roshan

Roshan is the large gentleman in the picture below. He’s always there, in his cave, chilling out and admiring the work that the ten of you are putting in around the map.

He’s not just there for decoration though; this guy is crucial.

When your team thinks they’re strong enough you can fight him and, should you win, he drops an item which grants one player on your team a second life. In the latter stages of games that second life on an important hero can be crucial.

Be careful though; not only is he strong, but the other team will be watching him closely.

9. Defend your base

DOTA 2 might sound extremely complex but at its core it is very simple; defend the giant glowing building in the middle of your base.

There are no exceptions.

The buildings in this game matter more than gathering a bit more gold or laying down an extra ward. If your base is under attack then you better hot foot it straight back to defend it; your team won’t appreciate any dawdling along the way either.

10. Prepare to lose. A lot.

You will not win every game of DOTA 2. Heck, you won’t even win 60 per cent of your games in DOTA 2. In fact most people tend to settle around a 48-52 per cent win ratio. You will have to learn to accept this.

Sometimes you’ll have a couple of naff team mates. Sometimes the other team will just be better. Just don’t get too disheartened when you lose and you’ll have a much better time of it.

By the same token, don’t get too high and mighty if you win – these streaks can come to an end extremely quickly.

Unlike other sites, we thoroughly review everything we recommend, using industry standard tests to evaluate products. We’ll always tell you what we find. We may get a commission if you buy via our price links. Tell us what you think – email the Editor

  • The Meat Hook travels at a speed of 1450, taking 0.9 seconds to reach maximum distance.
  • Pudge receives the Followthrough buff upon cast, which disables Pudge. It lasts as long as the cast backswing does.
    • The backswing of Meat Hook is dynamic, lasting until the hook starts retracting.
    • This means when extending the hook range with cast range bonuses, it lasts longer. When latching on a unit, it lasts shorter.
  • The hook can hit units up to 1400 range away (max travel distance + search radius).
  • The search radius is centered around the hook’s tip. Getting close to other parts of the hook has no effect.
  • Can only affect units while extending, not while retracting. Fully affects invisible units.
  • Cannot hit ancient creeps and invulnerable or hidden units.
  • The hook flies through impassable terrain and trees. It also can drag units over them.
  • Hooked enemies are fully disabled for the entire pull duration.
    • Allies are not disabled. They can act freely while being pulled by the hook.
  • When the hook hits a unit, it provides 500 radius flying vision at the unit’s location upon hit for 4 seconds.
  • Runes can be hooked as well. Doing so refunds the mana spent on the hook.
