I have had a long chat/interview with a Dota 2 pro player about different aspects of Dota 2 gameplay. He is a pro and I being the noob, replied to my inquisitive questions. He has played more than 6000 Dota 2 games and his Solo MMR is 6823 and Party MMR is 6253 at the time of writing. He had been in Leaderboard in SEA for quite some time. (This article was written back in August 2015, it was deleted accidentally but I managed to recover it after a long time)

I have converted our chat in the form of an article in easy English for the understanding of all those who sincerely want to improve their Dota 2 Gaming Skills.

I will write it down in point form so that it is easy to grasp and understand. Those points are in no sequence, just random, anything came to my mind, I asked and discussed with him including some secret tips which will not be secret after reading this guide.

1. Pro Players Do Not Panic (Often)

Once you think that the game is going like hell, everyone including you is feeding and the enemy team is fat as hell, you will start panicking. But its very seldom that you’ll see a Dota 2 Pro panicking. Once they know one of their strategies has failed, they move to the next strategy and try other options.

Example :

You have a tinker or Nature Prophet in your team, you can start rating. Although it feels and looks bad, but hey, you ever heard Admiral BullDog? The best Dota 2 rat player and his team have won many matches because of him ratting. No one stops you from doing it. This will give space and time to your team and your carries and especially your rat will start farming well. If you got a lucky chance, you can take barracks or even enemy ancient through ratting. Therefore, think and plan for new strategies once your main strategy has failed and do not panic.

2. Don’t Lose Hope Till Your Ancient is Destroyed Because Come Back is Real

Pretty self-explanatory I think. I myself have seen players calling GG WP, Finish Fast etc at 10-12 mins of the game.

Example:

Remember the longest game of Dota 2 between Cloud9 and SFZ? This game lasted 3 hours and 33 mins. Ultimately SFZ won the game despite mega creeps. They could have also called GG WP when it was mega creeps, but they did not give up and ultimately won the game.

3. If Your Team Sucks, it Means You Suck Too Because You are Part of Team

“Most of the time” you are matched with players whose skills and stats match with yours. Your Teammates and your opponents have almost the same skill level, almost same hours played, almost the same number of games won and almost same KDA ratio. This is how Valve’s matchmaking system works. Take a look here for more details about how Dota 2 matchmaking works. It’s very rare that you are matched with any players with a lot of skill difference. However if you still see some of the player playing stupidly, that means either he is new to that hero, or he is completing some of his fuc**ng challenge (Thanks to compendium).

So do not start saying noob Slardar, GG Stun, delete Dota 2, you are stupid etc… It will only get you more enemies and believe me it won’t make the situation any better.

4. Define What Role You are Good at, Then Play According to That

Everyone cannot carry and everyone cannot play support because it’s against their natural playstyle. If there is anyone who claims he can play carry and support equally good, then that means he not good at either of that role.

If you like to play very aggressive, try playing tanks or nukers to take a solo kill. If you like to farm till the end of time, better pick a hard carry. If you do not like farming and just want to chill around the map and only want to participate in team fights, why not to go for support. If you can’t do anything, then delete Dota 2 and start playing “LoL” because it is not your game to play. Bonus Point: There is no Kill Steal in Dota 2

Most of the time you find people who keep whining about kill stealing. This happens mostly in low-skilled games. When you go to high or very high skill games, everyone understands that there is no Kill Steal. Only killing enemy heroes matters. So if you are one of those who cries about someone stealing your kills, then please stop doing that immediately.

I don’t say that carries should not take the last hit for kills, they should. I just want to say that don’t let enemy hero escape once he has entered in your trap.

However, there may be situations where supports can easily avoid kill stealing thus allowing carry to take the kill. So, in that case, leave the last hit for your carries. In case you are playing carry, no matter what your teammates say about KS, just take last hits. Because it will be you who has to carry the game later on.

Example:

If you are playing Oracle and got 30 kills, I think that may not get your team a win. But if same kills have been done by a hard carry, for example, Medusa, Spectre or AM, then you surely are going to win the game.

*During an attack your Hero typically executes two stages of animation; the first when executing the actual attack, and the second is “follow-up” after damage has been applied.

*The first animation stage must always complete itself, but you can actually “cancel” out of the second animation stage simply by moving if you are a physical attacker, or by ordering your Hero to “Stop” if you are using a casting ability.

*In the case of physical attacks, cancelling the follow-up animation lets you stay on the move after attacking but for casters it actually keeps you from using the ability, saving you from using mana for the ability and having it go into cooldown.

* Bottle Refill Trick – You can refill your Bottle without Bottle crowing or going back to your fountain. To do this, immediately give your Bottle to an Ally who has teleported near you from a fountain. This fills your bottle, due to the fountain buff lingering briefly after after the other player has left the fountain. Use a TP scroll, Keeper of the Light Recall, Nature’s Prophet Teleportation, or recall on Lone Druid Spirit Bear to help refill an ally’s Bottle.

* Denying Allied Heroes – This prevents the enemy from gaining any gold or experience from the kill. You are able to deny your allies under two conditions: one, they are under the effect of a poison ability such as Doom’s Doom or Queen of Pain’s Shadow Spike; two, your ally is under a certain percentage of health. A-Click to deny an ally. Allies will still lose unreliable gold upon death.

* Losing Tower Aggro – Towers have attack priority that decides what they hit. If you are dying and want a tower to stop attacking you, A-click an allied unit. The Tower should change targets as long as other units are within range.

* Bottle Spam in Fountain – Bottles refill automatically and instantly in fountains, so spam your Bottle to heal faster. The faster you can heal in a fountain, the faster you can get back out to battle!

* Buy Before You Die – Be aware that you lose unreliable gold when you die. If you know death is imminent, access the shop and quickly buy your next item. The item will be waiting in your stash when you respawn!

* Armlet Toggle – Armlet of Mordiggian toggling can help you survive in situations where you would normally die. Turning it on gives a +25 strength bonus and increases your health. The armlet drains health while in use, so you what you want to do is turn off the armlet with lower HP and then quickly toggle it back on, granting you a health boost. The cooldown period is 2 seconds. An armlet that has been turned off drops your HP for a brief moment, so be sure you aren’t taking damage over time and make sure you’re not about to sustain an injury from an attack.

Item Build

Starting Off You want to Get a Set of Tangoes, a Healing Salve, Bracer, and a Gauntlet of Strength.
The 1st item you want to farm is boots, You must race your enemies with your Edict on to deal full damage, Get Perseverance (for bloodstone) then Bracers.
After that, get Arcane Boots, to fasten your bloodstone, after arcane, its either wand or rush Bloodstone, Dont Buy an Energy Booster and disassemble you Arcane Boots, and buy a boots of travel to max your pushing capacity, after Bloodstone, get Blink Dagger ( or shadow Blade if blinkers or enemy team), then get scepter, and then its all about the situation ( BKB if Stuns and spellcasters, or Linkins, depending on what you prefer) oh, and ALWAYS get scythe of vyse, the mana regen is amazing to make up for your mana loss from the ult.

Skill Build

Just Follow the Sequence and here’s some tips on each skill
Split Earth:
Use it in an escaping enemy’s path, and use it to escape in early stages of the game

Diabolic Edict:
This is the TRUE meaning of Tower Eating, one cast and auto attacks can take down the tower’s health, ALL OF IT, this skill gets the BOSS awards of high damaging spells, it can be used on heroes, but make sure that only 1 unit is close so you deal max damage to it, the more the units, the less the damage dealt, same rule goes to towers.

Lightning Storm:
This Skill is mostly used for Pushing and defending, and nuking heroes.

Lightning Storm:
The Ult, ONEHELLOFAN ULT, Keep this skill on in a team fight, and its a guaranteed win (unless you or your team fed) use this to farm if you are underfed, or to push, clear the wave using this ability and finish off towers using Edict.

Tips and Tricks.

1- Your Blink Dagger’s use is like an escape ability, or a chase, you can blink in front of an enemy, turn on your edict, and chase him while the edict totally eats it

2- Having Dominance in lane is crucial, you want the 1st tower destroyed to be your lane enemy’s, however, be careful from ganks

3- use your boots of travel to take down a tower in a lane and TP to another and destroy it

4- STAY AWAY FROM SILENCES AND MANA BURNS, These are your only weakness.

Console Commands

Console Commands are options accessible via the Developer Console. The dev console allows the user to create an advanced configuration of game settings, using options not listed within the game’s settings menu.

Commands that are listed as cheats will not work within the normal game. Cheat commands will only work in custom lobbies with cheats enabled. For a list of cheats, see here.

How to use Console Commands [ edit ]

Commands may be typed directly in the developer console to activate the setting, however it is recommended to create an autoexec. cfg file. The file will automatically run the listed commands when a match starts so they will not have to be manually typed every time.

Steps to create an autoexec. cfg file:

  1. Create a text editable file using Notepad or similar software
  2. Type in the desired commands per line, including the desired values for variables
  3. Save as autoexec. cfg and make sure it is. cfg and not a. Dota 2 clunky controls and variables txt file or any other file extension
  4. Place the file in the \cfg folder found in your install directory, usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\game\dota\cfg

Proper Syntax [ edit ]

When writing a console command, it will normally consist of “blocks” separated by spaces.

Here is an example of a command with each block highlighted for visibility. Block 1 = blue , block 2 = red , and block 3 = green .

bind q “dota_ability_execute 0”

Any command with a third block must encase that block within quotation marks. Placing quotation marks around other blocks may cause errors in which the command will not work.
Code containing only two blocks does not require any quotations.

For an advanced command using incrementvar the proper syntax is as follows:

bind c “incrementvar dota_player_units_auto_attack_mode 1 2 1”

The three numbers are min, max, and delta. Dota 2 clunky controls and variables In the example 1 2 1 the minimum value is 1, the maximum is 2, and the increment is 1. This effectively acts as a toggle, increasing the value by 1 to switch between 1 and 2.
If the values were 0 2 1 instead, it would toggle between three states with each press. Starting at 0, then increasing to 1, then 2, and then looping back to 0.
If the delta was set to 2 instead, 0 2 2 , it would switch from 0 to 2 with each press because the delta would increase 0 by 2 to equal 2.

Adding // in front of a line of code will make the autoexec. cfg ignore that line for input. This allows you to write notes without causing errors.

1 build was getting midas then rush radiance that I think its A very interesting build

She was always good in pubs.

You can go winstreaks with this hero, but she’s really skill-dependent.

Both macro-, micro – and decision making.

You don’t need meta to win with her, there are spammers, who play her non-stop for the sake of it.

Kinda like AW/Meepo in the sense that she can be countered hard and be a nuisance, but can also win games solo, if the player is capable of it.

In advance: I am not a good Brood player, but I know them and you can get really high with that hero.

Unless you’ve seen someone play her first, you may feed and lose games.

You need to know proper web placement and use or you’re fucked.

You need to know how to micro around certain heroes.

High-level Brood abusers have an insane gut map awareness. Brood is the fastest farming offlaner in the game: in most games w/o Midas your GPM will be at least 550/600 and w/Midas/Radiance it is around 700/800 all the time. That is a double-edged sword.

The cost of feeding is insanely high. Not only will you feed with probably highest net worth/level on the map, but also all of your spiders.

You’re a glass walking bag of gold, which is always alone, basically.

My brood games always go the same way – dominate lane, dominating streak, pushing raxs by 15mins.

brood was in the cheese hero category with meepo and cancer lancer until axe became a playable hero so now the hero will always have a viable counterpick no matter the lineup

if you really want to win pick lina mid or crystal maiden support, just saying

if you really want to lear brood then just watch a lot of replays and find the logic on the plays they make
shes a kinda easy hero to micro since her units are almost always with phase movement and dont have any buttons to press, usually core items are brown boots or no boots at all into a soul ring midas then you decide on orchid, sabre or vlads, vlads is for 1v5 situations, echo is when they have very frail supports like crystal maiden and AA, orchid is for AOE heroes (qop, invoker, void, any hero that you can force into manta/bkb/linken is a good orchid pick), and those items followed always with a survivability item, since brood is very very very frail and counterable. bkb is the best choice, ac and shivas are also very good picks, lotus orbs if you’re coming from behind and then just buy damage items until you lose the game because your hero is insanely bad

Ever wondered why you have a skill bracket under most matches you play that look like this?

The reason for this is Dotabuff takes the average skill of a match from the Dota API algorithm that labels the skills of these matches.

What are the cutoffs for these skill brackets?
Normal Skill – 3200 and under
High Skill – 3200 through 3700
Very High Skill – 3700 and above

Keep in mind that your ranked and unranked matchmaking ratings are not correlated, therefore, you may play at a very high skill level in unranked, but still be placed in high skill matches in ranked since your MMR is 3200-3700.

What will my MMR be after calibration?
The easiest way to predict your mmr is to look at your recent matches skill brackets.

– If your solo queue matches you’re playing tend to be in normal skill, you should expect to calibrate at 3200 or lower.
– If your solo queue matches you’re playing tend to be in high skill, you should expect to calibrate around 3200 to 3700.
– If your solo queue matches you’re playing tend to be in very high skill, you should expect to calibrate at 3700 to 4999. As 4999 appears to be the general cap for calibration rankings.

What is “Hidden MMR”?
I’m not too familiar on this topic myself, so I enlisted the aid of TripleSteal to explain this. Hidden MMR is the rating you’re given in unranked matchmaking, very similar to your ranked rating, except there’s no way to see it. The calibration for this is typically within your first games on a new account and sways very heavily based on your performance. Once this calibration ends, your ranking changes on a game by game basis similar to ranked. So basically raising your rank in normal matchmaking is achieved the same way as in ranked. Your solo hidden mmr, party hidden mmr, solo mmr, and party mmr, are all unaffected by each other. When you start calibrating your ranked mmr, you start at your hidden ranking.

How can I raise my calibration rating?
The most important games are most likely your games pre calibration. As the game has generally gotten a feeling for what mmr you’ll be at already. The calibration games are just confirming your skill level. A good tip to raising your calibration rating is raising your general stats such as gold per minute, experience per minute, hero damage, tower damage, hero healing, and obviously winning

I’m normally in Very High Skill solo but play Normal Skill games with friends. Why is this?
When you’re partied with people of various skills, it’ll average your rankings and put you somewhere in between the two. So if you’re 4,000 mmr and your friend is 3,000, you’ll get sent into a 3400-3600 match.

How do I get better?
There are plenty of ways to improve your game:
– Watching replays and analyzing your mistakes and what you could improve on is a good idea
– Watching professional matches and learning what players do there and why
– Watch joinDOTA matches Watch BeyondTheSummit matches
– Getting a coach is also very useful, as they can find mistakes you don’t realize you’re making and help you fix them. It could even just be a friend that you ask for guidance.
– Find a coach on DotaCoach
– Pick a small set of heroes for each position to focus on to improve at the general position. Such as choosing 3 mid heroes, 3 offlaners, 3 supports, and 3 carries to master
