Tusk.
Snowball.
Tusk.
True Sight.

International 2011 dota 2

The year is 2011. It’s August 17 and you’re watching 16 teams gather in Cologne, Germany to participate in a tournament the likes of which had never been seen. Valve are utilizing GamesCom to showcase a new game – or a sequel to a game which I had been playing for 5 years already. Dota 2 was born and to show the game off, Valve organized The International 2011 but we had no idea what was in store.

In the next few weeks, starting now, I will take you on a journey through the History of the International, where it all began, the prize pools, the winning teams and everything surrounding each event as we lead up to this years TI8.

The International 2011

On the 1st of November 2010, Valve released a new blog page dedicated to Dota 2 stating that “from now until the release of the game next year, this will be a place where you can get information on our progress as we build the game.” The post continued to explain what Dota 2 is and what the developers had been working on. 16 days prior to TI1 kicking off was when everything was turned on its head. Barely a year after they had announced that Dota 2 was coming, Valve released another post on the Dota 2 blog and this one came as a massive surprise to the already growing community.

The announcement was met with tons of people around the world going absolutely crazy because not only would this be the first showing of Dota 2 to the world but mainly because of the prize money linked to it. “The winning team will receive $1 million.” With tournaments at the time not having high prize pools, with between $1000 and $15,000 being the norm for events, this was going to be insane. The rumors at the time placed the prize pool at around $50,000 but Valve and IceFrog quickly destroyed these when they spilled that $1,600,000 was the total prize pool for the event and the internet forums blew up. The event quickly became a huge deal and not just another game release – but nobody knew just how big Dota 2 would actually become.

The Teams

The teams taking part at The International 2011 were barely known; players transitioning from DotA and HoN, now participating in this magnificent event which offered $1,000,000 to the team who prevailed at the end. From around the world, teams came together in Germany and over 5 days they would determine who would come out as the winner of TI1 and write their names in the history books.

By the end of the tournament, a team called Natus Vincere (or Na’Vi) would make themselves known to the Dota 2 world as they took down everyone in their path to claim the amazing first place prize. It was a moment remembered by everyone in the Dota 2 community as the grand finals had pinned Na’Vi up against one of the most fearsome opponents in the competition and the favorites to lift the title, EHOME. Holding their own, the mainly Ukrainian squad would take a 3-1 victory and their names were etched into the history of Dota 2.

In what was considered one of the best game of the entire series and of the tournament, EHOME would make Na’Vi suffer their only loss of the entire event. EHOME being the favorites were already a game down due to Na’Vi being given a 1 game default win after they came through the Upper Bracket. The Chinese team fought tooth-and-nail, dismantling their opponents and making sure that the series would be tied. Unfortunately for EHOME their loss in the next game severely diminished their morale and Na’Vi would quickly pounce to take the entire series.

The International 2011 Placements and Rewards

  • First Place – Natus Vincere – $1,000,000
  • Second Place – EHOME – $250,000
  • Third Place – Scythe Gaming – $150,000
  • Fourth Place – Meet Your Makers – $80,000
  • Fifth/Sixth Place – Moscow Five/Invictus Gaming – $35,000
  • Seventh/Eight Place– Nirvana. International 2011 dota 2 Int/Made in Thailand – $25,000

We have come a very long way since TI1 – new heroes, hundreds of patches, millions of bug fixes, a plethora of new names and faces, 7 different victors over 7 years, insane prize pools, absolutely breathtaking plays, tears of anguish alongside tears of joy, the game’s full release out of beta, the DPC and so many other aspects. Dota 2 has never stopped growing and it all started back in 2011 with a few hundred people at GamesCom watching.

Free to Play

Three years after TI1 had wrapped up, Valve released a feature-length documentary called “Free to Play” which followed the lives of 3 players who performed in the magnificence that was the first iteration of The International. Danil ‘Dendi’ Ishutin, Clinton ‘Fear’ Loomis and Benedict ‘HyHy’ Lim took front and center as their lives through TI1 were put under the spotlight. The film invoked a plethora of emotions throughout the Dota 2 community – especially for those who had been following the game since day 1 and had witnessed the majesty of that GamesCom.

Short movies about Dota2 heroes!

I recently started to read the lore of every single dota2 heroes! I just love it! It’s cool to know the real story behind heroes. It got me addicted.

I’ve been browsing the internet in hope to find short movies about specific dota2 heroes but in vain.

Do you guys know where I could find some or if they exist?

God. Right now I’m dreaming about watching Clinkz the fallen general under the command of Sutherex and how he drove Maraxiform back to the gates of 6th hell!! How cool would that be.

Maybe one day Valve will make nice videos!

I wish I had the time and the skills to make videos

Hehe yes that would be plain great.

Other MOBAs already did something like that. For example League of Legends, which I personally don’t like, but their CGI clips made even their shitty heroes appear kinda cool. Just check this out:

I’d love to see anime style saga (f. e. like bleach) for the dota universe. I’m especially interested in Nightstalker lore, because he is “Said to have been around during the dawn of the First Day” and the fact that he oftentimes during a game of dota 2 says “I remember the first day”. How did he survive the genocide of the first day? Was he without eyes (he and his people lived their whole lives without any light) and evolved them afterwards? I would also love to see the “Creatures of the Primordial Night” and so on.

Too bad dota is not so popular in Japan (pc gaming in general isn’t) and there will be no money flowing in Valve’s direction from anime producers in the foreseeable future. :/

as much as i would like cinematics for every hero in dota 2, we must not forget that there are over 100 heroes.
so either valve would have to invest alot of production into some cinematics that most people will only watch once anyway
or
it would be some kind of composed cinematic as the league of legends video linked above, which doesnt do the characters and their lore any justice.

i think it would be better to leave things like that to the community and let valve work on the gameplay which is the main part of dota. Dota 2 valve cinematics pc

OK maybe 1 cinematic per hero is too much

But you could incorporate 4,5 heroes in 1 cinematic

For instance, shadow fiend, shadow demon and lucifer – all 3 have the similar lore. As a matter fact, lucifer is like the general and shadow demon tries hard to undo lucifer’s spell on him

my god.. I would pay to see cinematics. the lores are GG

He currently plays for The Pango.

Biography [ edit ]

Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Dendi got an early start with competitive gaming in net cafes when his elder brother married, moved out and took the family’s PC with him. Dabbling with Counter-Strike first, he soon found Warcraft 3 where he played in local tournaments and built a love for the competition and a thirst to be the best. Though he was quite successful in Warcraft 3 and even won a few local championships in Lviv, he knew he had found his calling when he stumbled upon DotA. He picked up the game quickly and played it almost exclusively over the next few months.

Beginning with learning only supports, he practiced heavily and was quickly vouched to the IHCS1 league and soon created his own team for tournaments in Lviv. After he led his team to a championship in Kiev, he was drafted by a team called “Wolker. Gaming” and began his professional career at 17.

DotA [ edit ]

Dendi started playing professionally with WG in 2006. [1] He was a part of the Ukrainian squad that finished third in MYM Prime Nations the same year. Only a few months later WG made it to the grand final of one of the most prestigious tournaments at the time; MYM Prime Defending. [2] When Kingsurf. international merged with WG the next year he became a full-time member of Ks. int. [1] In late 2008 he joined DTS, only to return to Ks. int in March 2009. [3] Three months later though, Dendi returned to DTS. [4] The team would end up finishing 2nd at ESWC 2010. At the end of 2010, Dendi and DTS finished 3rd at the prestigious WDC 2010. [5] Dendi joined Natus Vincere at the end of 2010. [6]

Dota 2 [ edit ]

Dendi started his Dota 2 career with Na’Vi, who quickly established themselves as one of the best teams in the world by winning The International 2011. Na’Vi continued to dominate and won many tournaments in the years 2011, 2012 and 2013. Dendi was the center of Na’Vi’s consistent stable and skilled rosters, with his performance greatly contributing to their success.

The Natus Vincere Dota 2 team achieved significant success with Dendi as their midlaner during the first few years of the game; they finished as the runners-up for both The International 2012 and The International 2013, losing out to Invictus Gaming and Alliance, respectively. 2013 would mark the last year of Na’Vi and Dendi’s dominance in the Dota 2 scene, as they only recorded two LAN victories since January 2014. The International 2014 saw Na’Vi and Dendi finishing the tournament outside of the top 2 for the first time and the following two Internationals, TI 5 and TI 6, they would finish in last place. The results would deteriorate further, as they would fail to even qualify for The International 2017, they failed to advance out of the group stage of the regional qualifiers. This marked the first year of The International tournaments without Dendi attending as a player. The 2017/18 season started of promising for Dendi and Na’Vi, who dominated the CIS scene in the early months, crowning their improving results with their second LAN victory since 2014. However, the second half of the season saw the roster break apart and finally the team would fail to even reach the regional qualifiers for The International 2018, after losing in the open qualifier.

Four years of roster instability and poor results finally took their toll on the reputation of the Na’Vi organization and on Dendi’s status as a legendary player and a top tier midlaner. After 8 years playing mid on Na’Vi, Dendi was finally removed from the active roster in September 2018. However, Dendi vowed to continue playing professionally. After a brief stint on Tigers, Dendi joined The Pango.

Star Ladder X SEA – XctN and JoHnNy’s Revenge lead the race

Almost half the matches have been played for the StarSeries X SEA qualifeirs, and the leaderboards can provide a good projection of the upcoming final standings. So far, IAP. XctN and Johnny’s Revenge occupy the two first places, followed by Invasion, Arrow and MiTH.

We are halfway through StarLadder Season X SEA qualifiers, and we have encountered several surprises and upsets so far. The two leaders of the board are from Singapore and Philippines respectively : Johnny’s Revenge and IAP. XctN. Both teams have had a remarkable run until now, and while Johnny’s Revenge sits atop the rankings with six wins, IAP. XctN is not far behind with five victories to their name. Both the teams have only dropped one match each, and stand a very good chance for qualifying for the finals. Johnny’s Revenge is led by Johnny JoHnNy Lee, who departed from Arrow after the TI4 shuffle, and has four other notable names from the SEA scene joining him in this newly formed team. On the other hand IAP. XctN is also a relatively new team which has recently been strengthened by acquiring former Mineski captain Ryan Jay ‘Bimbo’ Qui.

The middle of the table is tightly packed, with four teams (Arrow, MiTH. Trust, Invasion and MSI TRIC) sitting at four wins each while following them closely is Titan with three wins. While the Malaysian Arrow has been facing issues since the departure of Johnny, they stand a good chance of qualifiying. This also counts for MiTH. Trust, as their run has been solid. Invasion, an emerging team from the SEA scene, stands a little better than Arrow, MiTH or MSI TRIC having dropped only two matches while the others have lost three. The favorites, Titan, have had a rough run in SL-X. They started off badly, losing their first two matches but are currently on a three match win streak. Notably, Mushi has stood in for NWP-Yamateh for their last two SL matches thus re-creating the old Orange roster that got third place at TI3. The relatively unknown team, MSI TRIC has surprised us all by beating some of the strongest SEA competitors and they now find themselves with a realistic chance of going to Ukraine.

Things are looking grim for the other teams as they complete the table, taking up the bottom slots. Mineski, Insidious Idol and Immunity have managed to secure two wins and protect their theoretical chances of making it to the finals. However, the situation is worse for First Departure and Awake who have both lost six matches, winning just the one. It is very difficult for the two teams to make it to the finals.

Since there are no following playoffs for the SEA qualifier, the team that secures the top slot will be travelling to Kiev, Ukraine to compete against six other teams (4 from Europe, 1 from China and 1 from America) at CyberArena from October 23rd to 26th. SL-X has a starting prize pool of $80,000 and fans can contribute to the fund by purchasing the in-game tickets released on the Dota Store. Meanwhile, the action shifts to China, as the Chinese qualifiers being on 9th September.
