Cloud vs the world

Just hours ago the Ukraine-based esports organisation Natus Vincere (Na’vi – latin for “born to win,”) announced that their Dota 2 roster was being disbanded. I don’t think it is surprising to anyone who has followed competitive Dota 2 for a while but, as Loda of Alliance put it on twitter “It’s a sad day for dota when Na’Vi disbands… They have been a loved part of the community.” I feel more or less the same way. I still believe that this is best for both the players and the organisation but it is always sad to see a big name fall from grace. I wanted to touch on their storied history and their unfortunate loss of status in the competitive Dota 2 scene that has been going on for the last year and a half.

Their original DotA squad contained the well-known names of XBOCT, Goblak (captain) and Mag along with now retired players Deff and Axypa, however, soon after Na’Vi DotA’s inception Dota 2 was released and Dendi, Artstyle, LightofHeaven and Puppey joined XBOCT to remold the face of Na’Vi, and remold it they did. They got their beta keys 3 weeks before the first International and went onto win it, beating out the then-dominant Chinese favourites EHOME in a 3-1 final.

Na’Vi’s dominance didn’t stop there and they reached the finals of the second and third Internationals, winning or coming 2nd or 3rd in every other event they participated in in 2012 and 2013. In that time ARS-ART joined and left the team as a position 5 player and Funnik and Kuroky joined as an offlaner and support respectively. Dendi secured his place as one of the best mid-players in the world and become, more or less, the poster-boy for competitive Dota 2. Puppey, also, became known as one of the best captains and was known for his unusual drafts, something he is still known for today. It was only in 2014, after some poor results in Star Ladder Series 9, ESL One Frankfurt, The Summit and, most importantly, The International 4, that people started to doubt Na’Vi.

The problem is that Na’Vi’s demise isn’t because they were wanting skill. Na’Vi are still good, but the game has changed and they have found it difficult to adapt. They are known for making big plays and using high-risk strategies but an introduction of a “comeback” mechanic to Dota 2 punished this heavily. I also feel like any attempt they made to adapt was sincerely undermined when they still posted some bad results as the pressure to be the best team in Dota 2, like they once solidly were, haunted them, and the fans were eager to remind them of this. Ultimately though I felt like their string of underwhelming results damaged the bonds they had as a team the most. Kuroky and XBOCT famously didn’t get along and, with comments recently made by Arteezy regarding Kuroky, it is easy to see why XBOCT felt that way, but it’s not just that. Performing poorly when you expect to do well just leads to finger pointing and, after a while, people just lose their team spirit.

With the loss of Puppey and Kuroky in late 2014 Na’Vi went though a long series of roster changes with faces both old and new coming into the mix. Some good results were posted but, for the most part, they just couldn’t quite get that return to form that they so desperately needed. It felt, for a long time, that Na’Vi were slowly dismantling their legacy as a Dota 2 team and, with their poor performance at TI5 and no invite to the Autumn Major, they have decided to hit the restart button. So what’s next for the players?

Well, there are rumours of a new team for XBOCT being thrown around. A team involving Dread, Goblak, ARS-ART and NS, though these are unconfirmed. For what it’s worth, I think whatever team they make won’t last very long if it’s with old personalities. It’s also worth noting that Goblak has made so many new teams in the past year that it has become a bit of a joke.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Dendi took the route that SingSing did and just enjoyed streaming and playing Dota 2 at the highest level without the pressure to perform. PSM will likely go back to his roots and either form a new team or try and get back with the people from Yellow Submarine, now PRIES. In an interview he said that he, luckily, is in a situation where he doesn’t have to worry about money if he is careful so he can spend his time playing Dota instead of working. Funnik, however, is a different story. Good offlaners are hard to find and, if Funnik can find his rhythm again, he will be snapped up by another CIS team. However, I also wouldn’t be surprised if Funnik retires. He got married this year and he might want a job where he doesn’t have to travel quite as much so he can spend time with his wife. I’d give either option a 50% chance of happening.

Finally, Sonneiko. I feel that, if Dendi joins a team, Sonneiko will be with him. I can’t quantify this with data but I feel that their play styles compliment each other. Sonneiko covers the most ground, out of any player in the world, in the first ten minutes of a game, and Dendi is one who likes to play aggressively so, if he has an excuse to leave the lane early to gank, then he’ll take it. However, Sonneiko may join a team of his own accord. He is the least likely to sit back and relax as he has just built a name for himself. He joined the scene at 17 and is now 19 and somewhat of a protege in his own right. He could go on to join a good many great teams if he gets the opportunity.

As far as Na’Vi as an organisation goes, I think they will find their form again. They have a great many resources and a big name to work with, I just hope they don’t get drawn into the trap of recruiting big name players in the hopes that individual skill translates into a good team, because that doesn’t work all the time. What I’d like to see is one or two experienced players along with new players. That way there is room for expansion and improvement by Na’Vi and people will, hopefully, measure their expectations accordingly. I wish all the players and the organisation the best of luck and, when Na’Vi announce their new roster, expect another post on that.

The new heroes started their journey pretty underpowered, not even reaching 45% win rate in their opening days. Players getting acquainted with their skill set and some balance changes have finally made heroes playable in high level pubs and also made it possible to start discussing them, since it is unlikely they will be receiving anything but some minor number tweaks in the nearest future.

The Reach beta has concluded and the team is now working hard towards the Season 1 launch. Here we share some of the details on the upcoming Season, and what players can expect when they log in to play.

The new patch is wild, with all the positive and maybe some negative connotations this word implies. As such, we are trying to be extremely cautious when discussing it so that we don’t unnecessarily invoke some misguided disenchantment from the community.

62 new items are available for finding, not purchasing. You can now build your inventory through jungling and not spending your gold. Is this good? Bad? Who knows, it’s too early to tell.

The Reach Beta has been a valuable month for us at Elo. The feedback from our community has allowed us to make considerable progress in refining the key automated systems of the platform and we couldn’t possibly be more excited to see people begin to play in Season One.

This is going to be less of a stats recap and more of a farewell to a patch, which overstayed its welcome for at least a couple of months. Instead of going over the same heroes once more, we felt it is more appropriate to highlight some of the heroes which were outside of the meta at the tournament’s start, but nevertheless had a great impact in the later stages of MDL Chengdu.

Bounty runes, come back gold, ancient creeps, camps stacking, and more. The economy of Dota keeps growing and growing but how does that affect supports and cores?

We’ve done a lot of testing with our current systems in the Reach league and are finally confident in opening it up to more users. Divine level players may now participate in Reach, effective immediately.

The first major tournament of the season is finally happening. Get up to date with all the teams participating, their odds of winning it all, and more!

Patch 7.22 is certainly overstaying its welcome and it clearly shows in the current professional tournaments. There are almost no new meta developments and for the most part the Summit 11 concentrated on the same exact heroes as the tournaments prior.

Captains and drafters are some of the most revered pros in the scene. The genius drafting strategies and counter picks can win the game before the first bounty runes spawn. Here are some draft ideas to try out for your next battle cup tournament.

Reach had an exciting and informative first week of games, with over 1000 matches played, and over 1200 unique players participating. Here’s the rundown on week 1, and what’s coming down the pipeline.

The idea of a tanky frontline hero in the offlane has been repeated over and over again for the last several months. It makes sense on the professional scene, while working incredibly well in pubs. Building survivability items and allowing yourself to be initiated on has become the go to strategy for a lot of teams and it is unlikely to change until after the new patch is released.

MMR may just be a number but a higher number is superior. Read this article to learn a few tips and tricks on growing your MMR number.

The current meta has been established for a long time but teams still must find their slight edge. At ESL One Hamburg 2019, we saw more of what we’ve been seeing for a few months now.

Discuss about possible concept art of heroes, models, etc. (i didnt find something like this on the forum. If already exist a thread like this, sorry for the double xD)

You guys can post any informarion you have.. anything you want even if is not official so we can discuss.

Unreleased content at the moment:

Azgalor, The Abyssal Underlord

Tresdin, The Legion Commander

Moment of Courage

Squee, Spleen and Spoon, The Goblin Techies

I don’t know what the hell Wraith King is going to be, if a heroe or what, but still beeing unreleased content.

Unknown, The Wraith King

Icarus, The Phoenix

(i know i know it’s fake, but i wanted to put something about me ;_; )

no offense but this is just a copy/paste from cyborgmatt’s site

to actually comment on unreleased heroes, it looks like soul keeper is the only boring hero left to port, and everyone else has wacky/fun abilities, so that’s cool

It just for an start.. i expect to drop more pictures on the near future. And is only going to be UC, nothing related to lore of those stuff.

About terrorblade, he’s probably going to be ported last with phoenix and techies.

The only thing i don’t understand is why they focus on Oracle? The Earth Spirit was understandable but..

About Wraith King, I think he is going to be holdout related.

Having random people play TB in team gonna ruin my support life. Port him slowest as possible please.

abyssal underlord probably won’t be called azgalor. he’s a raid boss.

Pit lord should be the next port and then techies .. I really don’t get why newer heroes like oracle are getting the nod before them

Legion Commander and Pit Lord up for release next.

Whatever Wraith King is. maybe with Holdout.

Oracle afterwards then work on Arc Warden and Winter Wyvern begin.

Phoenix, Terrorblade and Techies(?) follow that. /not together

iNvoKed you need to change your sig with storm’s new look

Pretty sure that’s intended. SS as the Derp-spirit. Haha

Well, if we’re talking about unreleased content. I’m not really big on much of the unreleased heros other than Phoenix, but nobody talks about Phoenix. I like heros that are highly mobile, can go fast, or initiate, so.. yea. Dota 2 techies concept art portfolio Regardless, I’m always interested in how competitive Dota changes with addition of new heros into CM. We might be talking like 2015, but impact of Elder Titan was huge, for example.

Dota 2 tidehunter highlights for black

Leviathan, the Tidehunter, is a melee strength hero who is formidable due to his uncommonly tough hide and his ocean spells that sweep enemies upward. He can be played as a support or as an offlane hero whose greatest strengths lie in being able to take heavy amounts of damage in the early game and the disabling powers of his spells.

Though he does not deal especially high damage at any point in the game, his spells can have a devastating effect on the enemy without expending much mana. Dota 2 tidehunter highlights for black He is able to send forth a spray of water to slow down the enemy retreat and his outrageous ultimate, Ravage, throttles enemies in a massive area around him. The durability of his Kraken Shell allows him to shrug off damage for absurd survivability against low damage attacks. Tidehunter’s ability to shrug off damage and his enormous strength gain makes him very durable, and the power of his spells means he is a tank the enemy very much needs to target.

  • Gush’s projectile travels at a speed of 2500.
  • Gush first applies the debuff, then the damage.
  • When upgraded, Gush releases a big wave, instead of a single target projectile. The wave always travels its full distance.
    • When targeting a unit, the wave is released towards its direction on cast. However, it does not home in on the target.
    • The wave travels at a speed of 1500 instead of 2500 like the non-upgraded projectile, taking 1.47 seconds to travel the full distance.
    • The wave can hit units up to 2460 range away (travel distance + radius).
    • The wave fully affects invisible enemies and enemies inside the Fog of War.
    • Provides 200 radius ground vision around each hit enemy for 2 seconds.
    • The wave does not provide any vision.
    • The second sound is used by the wave.
  • Damage block stacks with passive melee damage block.
  • The damage reduction is Damage Block and the debuff removal is a strong dispel.
  • The damage reduction is always on and is not connected to the damage threshold for debuff removal.
  • The Damage Block does not work against wards ( Plague Ward , Mass Serpent Ward , Death Ward ).
  • Does not reduce physical damage from spells, except from Moon Glaives and The Swarm .
  • Only damage from player owned sources (after reductions) is counted towards the debuff removal.
  • Damage counter for the debuff removal resets when Tidehunter does not take player based damage for 6 seconds.
  • It can’t dispel those deal damage before debuff, since it applies dispel on damage but not after the whole effect.
  • A debuff removal proc is indicated by a sound effect and water particles on Tidehunter’s skin.
  • The tentacles travel at a speed of 725.
  • Hit units are knocked up 350 range for the initial 0.5 seconds of the stun.
  • While in the air, other units may pass below hit airborne units.
  • The damage is applied upon landing, not upon getting hit.
  • Ravage’s effect is caused by a 250 units wide ring, which expands around the cast location at the given speed.
    • This means units within 250 radius upon cast are hit instantly.
    • The ring takes exactly 1.38 seconds to cover the remaining distance.
    • It also means that it is possible to evade the effects by blinking inside the expanding ring shortly after cast.

Highest earning esports players in Dota 2, Fortnite, League, CSGO

With the esports industry said to be worth $1.1 billion this year, it’s hard not to wonder what the teams themselves earn or how much individual players make. While salaries and the like are difficult to come by online, one thing that can help measure the success of a team or player are tournament earnings.

The International 2019 had a record-breaking $34,330,000 prize pool, while the Fortnite World Cup had a $15,287,000 prize pool for Solos and a $15,100,000 prize pool for Duos.

Let’s take a look at the esports players who are earning the most money at these high-stakes, high-reward tournaments.

Highest earning esports players

Johan “N0tail” Sundstein, $6,889,591.79

N0tail is a Danish Dota 2 player who is currently the captain of OG, the team that won TI9. That first-place finish earned his team over $15,620,000. The team earned another $60,000 earlier this year by finishing fifth at the MDL Disneyland Paris Major. His teammates, Jesse “JerAx” Vainikka, Anathan “ana” Pham, Sébastien “Ceb” Debs, and Topias “Topson” Taavitsainen, come in right after N0tail with very similar overall earnings.

Kuro “KuroKy” Takhasomi, $5,128,788.15

KuroKy last played for Team Liquid, the highest earning esports organization, before the entire squad decided to part ways with Liquid and form their own esports organization. Second-place finishes at TI9, MDL Disneyland Paris Major, and the EPICENTER Major earned KuroKy and the rest of the ex-Liquid roster a lot of prize money.

This has Amer “Miracle-” Al-Barkawi, Ivan “MinD_ContRoL” Ivanov, and Maroun “GH” Merhej following right behind him in the charts. Former Team Liquid teammate Lasse “Matumbaman” Urpalainen is also on the list, although further down at 11th after SumaiL.

Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan, $3,590,225.34

Most recently a part of Evil Geniuses, SumaiL has earned himself a good chunk of change by coming in 5th at TI9 and third at the Disneyland Paris Major, as well as winning a previous edition of The International while still with EG.

Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf, $3,052,800.00

Amidst all of the Dota 2 players above and below him on the list, Bugha found his way to 12th place thanks almost entirely to the Fortnite World Cup Solos Finals. Taking first place at this event earned him $3 million, the largest amount of prize money to be given to one player at an esports tournament in history.

Since then, Bugha has done well in other Fortnite tournaments as well, including a fourth-place finish in Week 1 of the Fortnite Champion Series Season X tournament in North America’s East division.

Highest earning League of Legends players

Aside from Bugha, the top 20 highest earning esports players are all Dota 2 professionals. This is because Dota 2 and Fortnite have the two highest tournament prize pools of every game in the esports industry.

While these crazy prize pools create explosive winnings for the players, League of Legends is often seen as a more stable esport to make a career out of. The salaries are some of the highest in the industry, with many making $300,000 from their salary alone and some star players reportedly making even more than that. But with many salaries kept hidden from the public, we can only look at what players have earned through tournaments for official numbers.

Here are the players who have earned the most throughout their careers thus far.

Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, $1,228,281

SKT’s star player Faker is the only League of Legends player to earn more than $1 million in his LoL career. This is thanks to winning three World Championship titles, along with some MSI and LCK trophies.

Lee “Duke” Ho-seong, $954,646,449

Unsurprisingly, SKT is also second on the list. Duke made most of his earnings in Season 6, when he helped the dominant team take the Spring Split title in the LCK and ultimately the 2016 World Championship as well. While this was where the majority of his earnings was made, Duke continued to find success with Invictus Gaming later on, including winning Worlds 2018.

Lee “Wolf” Jae-wan, $913,084

Wolf, another SKT superstar, comes in third on the list of highest earning League players. He became one of the highest earning players in 2017 when the team won Worlds that year. Like Duke, most of his earnings come from that time with SKT as the squad’s support player, but Wolf has since been seen playing with Turkish team SuperMassive Esports.

Highest earning CSGO players

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is another game with a lot of talented players who earn a lot of money at tournaments. Of course, the prize pools aren’t as incredible as Dota 2, but many players are still earning steady income by winning tournament after tournament on top of sizable salaries for the best teams. Right now, Astralis is the highest-earning CSGO organization, followed by Team Liquid.

Andreas “Xyp9x” Højsleth, $1,587,421.90

Astralis’ most clutch player Xyp9x is currently the highest earning CSGO player in the world, thanks to the team’s continued success in the scene. These accomplishments have Xyp9x’s teammates, Peter “dupreeh” Rasmussen, Nicolai “dev1ce” Reedtz, Lukas “gla1ve” Rossander, and Emil “Magisk” Reif all following him closely on the charts.

Jake “Stewie2k” Yip, $979,690.00

Team Liquid’s Stewie2k comes in after all of the Astralis boys, and he’s very far ahead of his current teammates at Liquid. That’s most likely because, on top of his winnings with Liquid, Stewie2k also had success with MiBR and Cloud9.

Stewie2k’s time at Cloud9 was particularly successful, as it including a CSGO Major trophy win in Boston.

Epitácio “TACO” de Melo, $960,839.89

This MiBR player is at the top of the charts after Astralis and Stewie2k thanks to his teams’ continuous success in the CSGO community. TACO also saw success as a member of Team Liquid, though he departed Liquid prior to their ascent to the world’s number one rank in 2019. The rest of the MiBR squad follows close behind TACO on the charts.

Monkey King Bar 7.07 – How it works against evasion

We analyzed the strengths of the new Monkey King Bar (MKB) and the differences with the old one. The number of hits and the damage against units/buildings are calculated separately.

First, let’s have a look at the bonuses and passives of the two versions.

Old MKB

Bonus: +66 damage

Passive: True Strike

+35% chance to proc 160 magic damage and mini stun for 0.01 seconds

True Strike attacks cannot be missed or evaded, and ignore evasion and blinds.

New MKB

Bonus: +60 attack speed

Pierce grants each attack a 75% chance to pierce through evasion and deal 60 bonus pure damage.

Attacks which proc Pierce cannot miss.

Illusions can bypass evasion but won’t benefit from the bonus damage.

The Pierce proc chances won’t increase buying multiple MKB, instead it works together with the Javelin’s effect.

The damage dealt by Pierce can’t crit or cleave, but lifesteal works on it.

Only works versus units, not against buildings or wards.

Number of Hits

The new MKB is better against enemies with less than 34% evasion

In the graph below, there is a comparison between the old and the new MKB, and how many hits per second they inflict against an opponent with 0%, 25%, 50%, and 100% evasion.

It examines different values of attack speed prior the purchase of the MKB, from 20 to 540. Note that 600 is the maximum attack speed attainable in the game.

The new Monkey King Bar will always hit more times than the old one, from 0% to 25% evasion, thanks to the improved attack speed. The exact value below which the new MKB is better is 34%.

Only starting from 320 attack speed the old MKB can inflict a greater number of hits to enemies that have over 50% evasion.

In the majority of games, the new Monkey King Bar will hit the opponents more times than the old one.

The Butterfly only grants 35% evasion, so against heroes that don’t have other sources of this passive ability, both versions of the MKB will be similarly efficient.

Phantom Assassin is the only big issue as Blur gives up to 50% evasion once maxed, and 75% if she takes the level 25 talent. In this case, the old MKB will always be the superior choice.

Damage Comparison

The old MKB was stronger damage-wise in most cases

In the following graph, we use as a test subject an enemy with 15 armor, while the attack speed of your hero prior buying the MKB is 220.

We consider different values of attack damage before buying it, and figure out the damage inflicted per second against opponents with 0%, 20%, 50%, and 100% evasion.

The old Monkey King Bar inflicted almost always more damage versus heroes with evasion

If your hero has a high attack speed the old MKB was stronger: you could make a better use of the extra damage.

If your hero has already a lot of damage the new MKB is better: the extra attack speed is more useful than the raw damage provided by the old item.

Against targets with lots of armor the new MKB is slightly more effective: the +66 damage of the old one has less value versus armored heroes. Still, this isn’t a huge factor.

Proc Damage

The difference between the proc damage caused by the two versions of the item is trivial. Most of the heroes in the game have a 25% magic resistance – the old MKB dealt 120 magic damage with a 35% proc chance, while the new one deals 60 pure damage with a 75% proc chance.

Against Buildings the old MKB was more efficient

The proc damage and True Strike effects don’t work against buildings.

In the graph below, we looked at multiple values of damage and attack speed before buying the Monkey King Bar.

The new item is better for any combined value of these two data above the red line, for any other value below the curve the old MKB was stronger. Generally, the old one was better in most scenarios.

Mixer looks to be the Dav >

Can shroud propel Microsoft’s streaming service skyward?

Mixer claimed another Twitch superstar yesterday. Shroud announced his departure from the streaming colossus, shocking fans and members of the streaming community. While shroud isn’t the first big name to make the move, the partnership shows that Mixer is more than willing to go toe-to-toe with its rival, Twitch.

But shroud’s monumental career move isn’t exactly risk-free. Twitch certainly has more world-wide reach, popularity, and resources than Microsoft’s streaming service. And if Ninja, who’s arguably the most popular streamer in the world, wasn’t able to maintain the same level of concurrent viewership on Mixer than he did on Twitch, how will shroud be any different?

Michael Grzesiek on Twitter

Same shroud. New home. https://t. co/eZV2GBBSsY https://t. co/AHaajkjees

Mixer takes aim at streaming giant Twitch

The Mixer conquest began when the streaming service convinced Fortnite superstar Ninja to switch over, promising a contract that would accommodate the growth of his brand outside of the gaming sphere. Though many believed Ninja “sold out” by accepting Mixer’s offer, his wife and business manager, Jessica Blevins, revealed that Twitch tried to limit the streamer’s licensing deals during contract negotiations.

Mixer enticing Ninja appeared to be simply coincidence—the streamer was unhappy with Twitch’s contract, Mixer offered him what he wanted, and, thus, the partnership was born. For those who thought Microsoft’s streamer poaching would end there, however, you were in for a surprise.

Shroud was poached. And in keeping consistent with his diplomatic, drama-free character, the streamer’s explanation for moving to Mixer was simple—”I just thought it was the best move for my career.” It’s unknown how much Mixer offered the former CS:GO pro, but, assuming no contract disputes were at play, shroud likely received a sizable amount that bests anything Twitch was willing to muster.

Picking up Ninja and shroud means Microsoft has the money and gumption to take on Twitch head-on. With shroud’s departure, Twitch has now lost two of its top three megastars. Ninja hasn’t streamed on Twitch for over three months and still has the most followers on the platform with over 14 million, double Tfue and shroud’s numbers, according to TwitchMetrics.

Mixer signing shroud only three months from partnering up with Ninja begs the question: Who’s next? Could it be the two-time champion Dr DisRespect? Unlikely, since Doc claims to have been approached by Mixer before and feels the streaming service doesn’t have the same engagement or longevity as Twitch. What about Ninja’s long-time pal, TimTheTatman? It’s possible, especially after Ninja jokingly tweeted TimtheTatman’s Mixer channel yesterday. Or will Microsoft attempt the trifecta by claiming former Fortnite pro Tfue? Perhaps.

These conjectures would’ve seemed like hearsay two days ago. But after shroud joined Team Mixer, suddenly anything seems possible.

Will the Mixer-shroud partnership prove to be a lucrative venture or precarious at best?

Well, one thing is quite obvious—shroud got paid. And if he was already making a substantial amount of cheddar with Twitch, you can expect that he’s certainly swimming in it today. But will his Mixer channel ever record the numbers that it did on Twitch?

The streamer’s currently at 360,000 Mixer followers, which is a far cry from his seven million on Twitch. And if Ninja’s Mixer channel is anything to go off of, shroud may never reach those numbers again. Ninja amassed almost 2.5 million followers on Mixer in the first three months of the partnership, which is an incredible feat. But it’s nowhere near the 14 million he had on Twitch.

Image via StreamElements and Arsenal. gg

And while Mixer had hoped that signing Ninja would skyrocket the platform to popularity, it didn’t quite work out that way. During Q3 of 2019, Mixer sat at fourth place in hours watched behind Facebook, Youtube, and Twitch, according to a report by StreamElements.

The hope was that Ninja’s presence would encourage viewers to check out other streamers on the platform, but it’s debatable if any noticeable change in viewership emerged. Mixer is certainly trending in the right direction, however, doubling its hours watched compared to a year ago. But Twitch is still Goliath in the battle of consistent viewership, and there doesn’t seem to be a David in sight.

Ninja’s average Twitch viewers in July hovered around 38,000, while his average Mixer viewers over the last 14 days is 12,000, according to Twitchtracker. In comparison, shroud’s Twitch viewership over the last 14 days is approximately 36,000. If the former pro’s channel follows the same pattern as Ninja’s, then shroud may find himself with around 11,000 concurrent viewers.

Other companies have unsuccessfully tried to rival Twitch in the past. Azubu. tv partnered with big League of Legends names, like SK Telecom T1 mid laner Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, to showcase players and live stream their games. Due to a mismanagement of funds, as well as streaming rights for League increasing from one to three million dollars in 2016, Azubu shut down and was succeeded by Smashcast. tv.

What’s to stop Mixer from encountering the same fate as Azubu? The financial backing of Microsoft.

Even though Mixer is taking a similar approach to Azubu, in that it’s recruiting premiere talent to be the face of the company, it has plenty of money to continue making bold financial decisions that may or may not payoff.

The silver lining

It’s unrealistic for Mixer to ever match Twitch’s mass appeal. Ninja knows it. Shroud knows it. Microsoft probably even knows it. If video giant YouTube falls short to Twitch—roughly 600,000 less hours watched in September 2019—than this may seem like a pipe dream for Mixer.

But that doesn’t mean it can’t have a large scale impact within the streaming market. The company clearly knows how to allure big streamers. Ninja and shroud were making millions on Twitch and were still willing to leave that behind for more money and whatever else Mixer could promise.

And Twitch has been under scrutiny recently by the community, who criticize the platform’s ambiguous terms of service. Some content creators were harshly banned for seemingly minor infractions, while those that committed bigger violations were let off with a slap on the wrist.

While Mixer might not ever get its own pie, the company has certainly earned it’s sliver and a seat at the adult table.
