The Biggest and Best Dota 2 Drama of 2017

2017 is coming to a close, so it’s time to reflect on the myriad of drama we’ve been treated to this past year in the world of Dota 2. Here are some of the more notable debacles.

Personalities and Players

Admittedly, I had no clue who she was until the drama bomb of 2017 hit /r/Dota2 and the ensuing mod conspiracy theory fallout was under full swing. I wrote about it in more detail here, but the tl;dr is a popular stackmate of Bulldog pretended to be someone she wasn’t by using a model’s photos and images on social media. Tpl dota 2 drama one raised When she was outed, the mods of /r/Dota2 initially deleted the thread (allegedly due to the caliber of comments populating it) which triggered mass accusations of unfair censorship and whiteknighting. This was a top 10 drama blowup for sure.

Drama Status: Definitely still simmering. Some people still have a bone to pick with the mods over the initial thread removal.

Playing into the Nara incident is Reddit’s treatment of CCnC, a semi-pro player/analyst who would later join PPD’s squad. He was invited to TI7 as part of the panel, and Dota fans were quick to point out that he was prone to raging in games, feeding, and generally being a really salty player. Dota is no stranger to controversial idols. PPD is known for his salty attitude, EternalEnvy rage-feeds sometimes, and people love RTZ for his babyrage.

CCnC was raked over the coals pretty hard by the Reddit community though, and mods generally didn’t remove threads about him despite the personal attack nature of some of the comments. This fed into the whiteknighting accusations in regard to Nara’s threads being initially removed.

Drama Status: Hard to say. I think people are over CCnC’s salty behavior in pubs (at least threads about him aren’t dominating the front page any more).

Ana owes some guy a lot of money (allegedly). Apparently, unknown-at-the-time player Ana signed a contract–or rather, his legal guardian signed it, since he was underage–offering 10% of his future winnings in exchange for coaching, exposure, and living situation. Once Ana started winning with OG, his personal coach claimed that he never paid out, despite the coach fronting a bunch of expenses. Ana had a run-in with contract issues in the past (with IG) as well.

Drama Status: The ex-coach (wobbly_au) said they would be giving the proceedings to charity minus the legal fees, should he win his case against Ana. Tpl dota 2 drama one raised I don’t think there’s been an update on the situation yet, and Ana hasn’t publicly addressed the accusations.

Valve

Siltbreaker

Valve Time. Pay to Play. We finally get something close to a single player campaign in Dota, and it was marred by typical Valve shenanigans. Siltbreaker was locked behind the Battle Pass paywall, which makes it effectively DLC. This is fine, but the pass expired after a certain time, which means if you didn’t play Siltbreaker Acts I and II during the window, you can’t play them. Act II was also delayed, but that’s pretty much par for the course with Valve.

Drama Status: Well, it’s gone now. You can find Siltbreaker in the Arcade, but expect it to be buggy and broken.

The Great MMR Reset

Fiddling with the beloved metric of rating one’s status as a player is always a contentious act. One of the issues with the MMR system was persistent “power creep.” The top MMR cap kept creeping up, making it difficult to gauge players’ abilities. For example, if the cap used to be around 7K and now it’s possible to hit 10K, the relative skill of a 2K player is now different when compared against the entire playerbase. Valve’s answer was to reset MMR and use an entirely different system. There are ranked seasons now, where MMR resets every few months. Instead of a number, you have a badge next to your account (similar to LoL’s system now). This should deter some account buyers, at least.

Drama Status: Heralds be salty.

Georgia Southern vs Appalachian State 2019 College Football Week 10 Odds & Pick

Written by Eric Williams on October 30, 2019

20th-ranked Appalachian State will look to remain unbeaten when they host Georgia Southern in their Week 10 Sun Belt Conference clash on Saturday. While the Mountaineers are statistically better than their conference counterparts in this matchup, let’s find out right now whether Appalachian State can cover the spread as two-touchdown plus home favorites or whether the Eagles are the pick to cash in on the road.

  • College Football Week 9 Odds: Appalachian State -15.5 / Total: 44.5

Weather Forecast

  • Partly Cloudy: 1 °C / 33 °F
  • Hum >Despite their modest record, there are some good reasons to back the Eagles in this contest. First, Georgia Southern has won three straight games including a 41-7 blowout over New Mexico State last weekend. Then, there’s the fact that the eagles routed the Mountaineers 34-14 a year ago despite being an 11-point home underdog.

Another good reasons to back Georgia Southern is the fact that they have the nation’s seventh best rushing attack (259.9 ypg) while junior quarterback Shai Werts has put together a school-record 161 consecutive pass attempts without an interception dating all the way back to 2017. Last but not least, Georgia Southern is playing for recently deceased freshman offensive lineman Jordan Wiggins who was found dead in his dorm room earlier prior to last weekend’s big win.

Team Statistics

Why Bet On Appalachian State?

There are a bunch of good reasons to back the Mountaineers in this matchup. First, Appalachian State ranks a stellar ninth in scoring (41.0 ppg) while also ranking an impressive 18th in points allowed (19.0 ppg). Then, there’s the fact that they will be highly motivated to get the win here as they shoot for an undefeated season.

“If we want to get to where we want to go, which is to win the Sun Belt Conference championship and a bowl game with class, integrity and academic excellence, this team stands in our way,” Mountaineers coach Eli Drinkwitz told reporters this week.

Another good reason to back the Mountaineers is the fact that they’ve been on fire the last two weeks in beating Louisiana-Monroe 52-7 two weeks ago before pummeling South Alabama 30-3 last weekend. Last but not least, Appalachian State has won 13 straight games dating back to last season.

Here are the winners of Valve’s $18 million dollar 2015 International Dota 2 Championships

Share All sharing options for: Here are the winners of Valve’s $18 million dollar 2015 International Dota 2 Championships

After weeks of regional qualifiers, wild card matches, last week’s group stages, and six days of main event play, the winner of TI5, the 2015 International Dota 2 Championships, is Evil Geniuses, who overcame CDEC in a tense, back and forth 3-1 victory in a best-of-five series.

Chinese team CDEC and North American team Evil Geniuses faced off in the upper bracket final on day four of the TI5 main event, sending the American squad to the lower bracket to face more stiff competition. Evil Geniuses odds were considered to be less than 50-50 against Chinese team LGD in the lower bracket final, but unexpected hero picks and drafting carried EG to a strong 2-0 finish. EG secured the the organization’s first trip to The International’s finals, and the first appearance in an International final from a North American team.

CDEC have proven to be one of the dark horse success stories of an International full of them. Formerly a “junior” team for Chinese eSports organization LGD, CDEC branched off on their own late last year. They were largely ignored over the unofficial 2015 season that kicked off around the Dota 2 Asia Championships early this year, and CDEC failed to secure their TI5 berth at the Chinese qualifiers, losing to EHOME 3-1.

However, CDEC clawed their way back into the competition in the wildcard qualifiers, and became virtually unstoppable, sitting at the top of the group stages and handily defeating everyone in the upper bracket, including EG, whom they sent to the lower bracket on day four of the main event.

Evil Geniuses is one of the most prominent eSports organizations in North America, and the team placed third at last year’s International competition. However, they were considered to have underperformed in some circles; the team had to replace one of their most important members, Clinton “Fear” Loomis, due to injuries that many felt would end the older player’s career. EG saw other major lineup changes after the event, including the departure of their most popular player, Artour “Arteezy” Babaev.

As Babaev left to join Dota 2 “dream team” Secret, Loomis reassumed his role on the team, and before the Dota Asia Championships in January of 2015, EG stumbled upon a then-unknown 15-year old Pakistani prodigy in Syed “Suma1l” Hassan, who went on to stun the Dota 2 community with his breakout performance, filling the void left in Babaev’s departure. Evil Geniuses won the Dota Asia Championships, making Hassan the youngest player in the history of Dota 2 to exceed $500,000 in winnings.

Evil Geniuses would prove inconsistent as the year went on however, frequently finding number two finishes against Team Secret, and finishing below CDEC in the TI5 group stages. They seemed strong in the upper bracket but were handily outdrafted by CDEC in the upper bracket final; their surrender in game two of that match marked the fastest loss at TI5’s main event.

In the lower bracket final on the last day of TI5, Evil Geniuses were forced to face strong Chinese team (and former stablemates to CDEC) LGD Gaming, a match Valve’s TI5 analyst desk did not favor them to win. But EG team captain Peter “PPD” Dager assembled an unorthodox, aggressive hero draft, forcing LGD to respond to surprising picks that left the Chinese team unable to effectively respond. Evil Geniuses would go on to win the lower bracket final 2-0, which once again pitted them against CDEC.

As first place finishers of TI5, Evil Geniuses will take home more than $6.6 million in prize money from the overall prize pool of more than $18 million. CDEC will take home more than $2.8 million.

DotA 2 Item timings

Defining the most important item timings

When we went to Captains Draft 4.0 in Washington DC, we spoke to Nahaz of datdota about the lack of good information out there on how much impact item timing has on winrate. Whilst many people who play DotA 2 have considered that there are items that could be more effective if purchased by a specific time, we have yet to see anyone attempt to quantify item timing in a meaningful enough way that we can make direct comparisons and rank times of purchase against one another.

Since we have detailed item purchase data on all heroes at STRATZ, we are in a good position to delve into this data and publish our findings.

When we asked the question, “By how much does winrate change for each minute the item timing is missed?”, we postulated that the faster the winrate falls off, the more important that item must be for attaining victory.

In mathematics, the slope or gradient of a line is a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of the line. Thus, the bigger the winrate-gradient for a hero-item combo, the more important it is.

In essence, we are equating item-timing importance with the rate of change of winrate, and expressing the rate of change as the mathematical gradient.

Let’s check out a sample winrate-over-time for Phantom Assassin Black King Bar purchases.

This winrate shape is similar to what we see for many hero-item combos. Unpredictable behaviour often occurs very early and very late.

This unpredictability can be attributed to a combination of fewer games where purchases were made at odd times, and a higher proportion of ‘weird’ item build orders. As an example, some very early timings on items occur when players skip boots and other important early game items to rush their first big item out. This tactic is effective in far fewer situations than it is attempted.

Note that in the central 69% of timings (purchases between 1 standard deviation above or below the average purchase timing), we tend to get a sensible well defined slope. In other words, the winrate decreases every minute the item gets delayed. Therefore, we define our winrate gradient as being the [linear] gradient in the area between these 69% boundary times.

For some of these graphs you will notice that any purchase time for an item has a higher winrate than average hero winrate. How is this possible? Simply completing an important item can be crucial to winning. If the game ends before a hero can finish building their item, there is a very high probability that they lost the game.

How do different build orders affect results?

Why could this be a problem? We will use two examples:

In our first example, armlet on Huskar is an essential first major item for two reasons:

Huskar’s passive gives magic resistance, so he only requires armour and HP to survive, both of which are prov >This is why armlet is purchased in over 98% of Huskar games at Divine level.

In our second example, Orchid is a great item on Storm because the hero requires mana regen and attack speed, both of which are provided by Orchid.

Storm Spirit players will sometimes go Orchid straight after boots, especially against enemy cores with important escape spells like Puck or Ember Spirit. However, seeing Storm attempting to build Orchid will trigger either Euls Scepter, BKB or Manta Style purchases to dispel the Orchid silence. This is a situation where poor timing can greatly decrease Orchid’s usefulness against those cores. Since kills on supports aren’t as valuable in the early stages of the game, the Orchid rush becomes very detrimental.

Due to this risk, many Storm Spirit players will opt for items that don’t offer as much kill potential but increase their farm speed significantly, like Bloodstone or Kaya, and purchase Orchid later on. We have already explained that it is a great item on Storm in general, and can assist in late game pickoffs on defenseless supports; a more useful objective when the game is 5v4.

In a case like this, an item build that delays purchase may have a winrate as high or higher than builds that rush the item.

This presents an issue where we are not 100% sure if a 25 minute Orchid purchase is a really poor timing on a rushed Orchid or a really good timing on a delayed Orchid.

These conflicting factors should naturally lead to shallower slopes or more weirdly shaped graphs in general. The timings will be more spread out as possible build variation increases.

Therefore a) will naturally have a bigger winrate gradient than b) due to greater item build variation.

Does this inval >‘most important item timings’? We don’t believe so. Why?

If an item can be purchased at multiple points in response to different circumstances, then it is inherently less important for a hero than an item that MUST always be purchased at a specific point.

Even though we are not controlling for precisely where in a build the items are purchased, it does not inval > “What are the most important item timings in Dota 2?”

Is Dota 2’s report system punishing the right people?

Some players are getting reported just because they had a bad game.

This article is brought to you by StatBanana, the best Dota 2 strategy tool.

The report system in Dota 2 is used to reproach players for four different reasons: communication abuse, intentional ability abuse, intentional feeding, and most recently, not playing a selected role.

Players should only be reported when they’re exhibiting terrible behavior in a match, not when people are playing badly. After all, if professional players are capable of having bad games, the rest of us are—no matter how skilled the player is.

But, what happens if I don’t carry you?

But the system is routinely misused by players. In some cases, Dota 2‘s report system has been abused to report bad play, rather than reporting players for toxicity. Instead of being a useful tool, it’s being misused as a threat. Players who garner too many reports can be forced into punishments, such as being placed into a low-priority matchmaking pool with other reported players or being banned from chatting in-game.

The difference between winning and losing.

A Techies player would likely gain an inordinate amount of reports compared to other players, for example. While Techies is known as an obnoxious hero that transforms the game into Minesweeper, it’s still a hero actively available and every player can pick it. Different approaches to game designs exist and Dota 2’s roster is filled with nasty heroes that have the ability to burn your mana, force you to attack your own allies, or literally disable your hero from using any skills or items for 16 seconds. There’s nothing inherently wrong with liking a hero and how it plays.

Different approaches to game design.

The reporting system has been in place since the beginning of Dota 2 and it likely won’t change very much. It’s a useful tool when used to flag out potentially disruptive behavior by players and it’s why behavior score remains a big factor in matchmaking quality.

So, can Valve make reports less punishing for innocent players? While there might be no direct approach to fix this, there are ways to mitigate the impact of the report system.

When it comes to players who report others simply for playing certain heroes, their behavior is likely a constant, recurring one, rather than a one-off display. For these players, fraudulent reports can be flagged from the account and can be discounted.

The number of reports can be changed to scale accordingly to a player’s past activity and report behavior. Players who routinely misuse the report system can also suffer a drop in their conduct score, providing a very real warning to the user in question.

Another solution Valve can take is to look toward its other games for inspiration. An Overwatch system exists in CS:GO for seasoned players to look at replays of others who are suspected of cheating or hacking. That system could be implemented in Dota 2 for the same reason, but also to verify whether the reported reason is valid.

Cases like these are admittedly rare. They come with consequences to players who committed the crime of being bad in one game or for choosing to play an unusual hero, however. Dota 2, more than anything else, is famous for the fact that anything and everything can work. It’s how the game and professional scene has managed to stay fresh after all these years.

With Valve being more proactive about banning users and accounts who are flouting the rules, the developer has to be careful not to ban out innocent players. There are far bigger crimes than liking an obnoxious hero and the system needs to address the issue properly.

How do I host a local lobby for a custom map (Arcade mode) in Dota 2, where Valve has enabled dedicated servers?

I keep getting disconnected from some custom maps in Dota 2 where Valve has dedicated servers enabled. One of the map creators said try doing a local server but I have no clue how I can do this in a custom map.

The maps I’m talking about have this indicator on them:

If I press “Create Custom Lobby” button, the arcade lobby system doesn’t let me pick a server unlike the Dota 2 lobby system.

I’ve found out how to play the game as if it was a local lobby but not as an actual local lobby. So, basically you can host the game but only for yourself with this method and that’s why I’m not going to choose this as the answer. The question is still how to do it as a locally hosted lobby and be able to play with friends.

Alright, on to the partial answer (click on pictures to see them bigger):

  1. Find the ID of the mod map you want to play and don’t forget to subscribe to the mod, in my case this was 302247405.
  1. Get Nem’s Tools and install (choose vpk in the file associations if you don’t want to bother later on) we’ll need this in a few steps
  2. Find the folder of your mods in steam, this will most likely be Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\570\ for DotA2 and it was indeed that in my case. If you have multiple folders, the active folder should be wherever DotA is currently installed but you might have to look for it.
  3. Find the folder with the ID of the custom map you wanted, this is the one we found at the start.
  1. Open the ID. vpk with the tool we just downloaded. Something like this should be there.
  1. Go to your DotA2 folder (you can go there by right clicking dota 2 in Steam going to properties > local files > browse local files) find the folder called dota_addons under game (on this path dota 2 beta\game\dota_addons but this might change later on as it is now there are four dota_addons folder and I had to try them one by one)
  2. Make a new folder with a short name, something you’ll be able to remember, I chose CHS because the mod is called Custom Hero Survival
  3. Extract everything from the VPK to this folder, if everything went to plan you should now be in this position or something similar
  1. Go into the game and go into the options menu and then advanced hotkeys, there should be something called Console set it something you don’t normally use in game (otherwise it’ll be a bother)
  1. Press the hotkey to open the console and type in “dota_launch_custom_game” leave a space and type in the folder name you used for the mod and then the map name you want to play, in my case this was dota_launch_custom_game chs hero_arena_coop and your game should now load with no problems

Anyway, the issue of being unable to play with friends is still there, so this question will remain open until an answer with that detail comes.
